Annie had never felt so tired. Being without Finnick, not knowing how he was, or if he was even alive, was a huge emotional and physical toll. Her heart ached for him, and she spent every moment wishing she could be in his arms again. Maris was the only reason Annie stayed grounded; her duties as a mother outweighed her duties as a wife. But as a broadcast sounded out over the Terminus speakers, alerting the rebels of their latest plan, Annie felt a semblance of something. Hope. Annie knew she’d have to remain here, she wasn’t a fighter, and her son needed her. But without her presence, she couldn’t be assured that Finnick would make it home. Unless she had someone fighting for their family. Kol had likely endured torture himself, being in the Capitol already, and was in no position to play his usual stance as their protector. She needed someone who she could wholeheartedly trust. Watching Maris as he slept, pondering her options, Annie remembered an old promise, from an old friend. She reached for her mobile, finding the number she’d been given, and told to ring only in case of emergency. A number no one else had. She clicked call, and waited not so patiently for Casper to answer.

Annie was watching Lito play pattycake with Maris, gentle smile on her face, when the sickness started to set in. At first, she mistook it for general pregnancy symptoms, or the fact that she’d spent a few hours away from Finnick, causing the non-human bond to affect her. But then her stomach started to twist uncomfortably, in a way she’d felt only once before. She grabbed onto the back of the park bench, hunching over, shaking her head. She wasn’t due for another few weeks, but this had happened before, the reminder of which sat giggling in front of her. “Lito…” Her voice was strained as the panic began to set in, knowing that both her company and location weren’t ideal. “Lito. Ring my husband. Please - I need -” A second later, she felt a light popping sensation, and water began to trickle between her legs. She needed to get to the infirmary before the contraptions started. As a non-human, they were blindingly painful, and the fear of which caused her eyes to well up.

Johanna’s gaze flickered toward Annie again, surprised by her subtle insistence. Though, really, she shouldn’t have been. The woman had always been incredibly caring, and that wasn’t something Jo had forgotten. It’s just that she hadn’t felt particularly cared about by the group of Victors in years, their betrayal cutting deeper after all they’d done for one another. Still, Annie felt separate to that, and having gone through this with Noah a few weeks earlier, it was a little easier for Johanna to accept the offered support. Though in this state, perhaps she would’ve accepted almost anything.

In silence, she nodded and miraculously made her way to the changing rooms, Johanna collapsing as soon as they entered, sliding down onto the tiles. Her legs quite literally gave out on her, the panic she’d held in from being in public suddenly hitting her gut, now hyperventilating. She couldn’t see the rain, nor hear it anymore. She was safe. But the panic wouldn’t pass for a while, she understood that. “I.. I’m gonna – throw up,” she breathed, teary eyes closing with effort.

Annie followed quietly behind Johanna as she led them, and then mirrored the notion, sitting down alongside her friend. She hugged her own knees to her chest, waiting patiently. She understood how overbearing emotions could be, especially regarding panic attacks. Unfortunately, Johanna would have to allow herself to feel it. Annie only hoped she could help her through it, using her own techniques and anchors as a guidance.

It was becoming increasingly difficult, to see someone she associated so much with strength to shatter in front of her eyes. But because of the life currently growing in her stomach, and the determination to protect someone she loved, Annie found the strength to overcome her own stressors and triggers. She blinked heavily, breath releasing as she did so, before nodding in understanding. They would be okay. Despite her co-dependence on Finnick, this was something she could handle on her own. “I know. And if you do… that’s okay.” 

“But you’re safe now. It can’t hurt you.” She held out a tentative hand, wondering if Johanna would hold it. Physical affection had always helped Annie come back down. “You’ll be fine with me. Promise.”
