okay !! so that was better than what i was expecting, mostly because we didn't actually get any sakura pov this chapter, which is what i was thinking we were gonna get
i am a little nervous about sugishita going to visit sakura though
so back then in noroshi arc, during the endo fight. we remember how sugishita "motivates" sakura, right ? it was very much a tough love kind of thing, where the point of what he said to sakura was that even though he had his fears and anxieties, he couldn't be dragged down by them; and that he had to carry them with him and still continue fighting, because sakura had declared to become their leader and follow in umemiyas footsteps
i personally think that was kind of. harsh 😭 i agree with it, but only because nirei and suo had said their pieces before that. they accepted sakuras weakness which i feel he needed in that moment more than anything. they wanted to show him that he wasnt alone.
i think it was only because they reassured him like that, sakura could be in the mental headspace to understand what sugishita said, and it all worked out because i do think sakura needed that win against endo (technically non loss ig) for himself, so like i do think that it makes sense that sugishita said whatever he said to him.
now, back to the present arc.
so sugishita usually sleeps through everything or atmost he has his head propped up on his desk, thats all. however, when nirei narrated what had happened between him and suo, he was extremely focused showing how invested he is
here, when umemiya says to focus on sakura because of how badly he is hurt, the rest of the main cast of furin agree. they know how badly sakura is hurt, that this kind of hurt is new to him, and they agree to support him through his suffering.
but, sugishita seems to be thinking something. for me, this expression reads as him being conflicted
now, its been pretty clear how much the class depends on sakura as their source of determination. they rely on him as a captain wuite a lot. its clear that they felt that suo was a very reliable person too
i think the class being so quiet is because of something beyond just feeling worried for suo and sakura. sakura and suos absence affects the mood of the class a lot, both of them are people that the class draws strength from just their presence, i think
basically it feels like the class is lost, and theres no one to lead them.
so yeah basically i think sugishitas just gonna go yell at him again next chapter 😭 i mean i get it !! nirei did say that suo looked like he was suffering and if they let themselves get convinced by what endo said, especially sakura, thats gonna cost them more time and energy that they can use to make a decision regarding suo.
if the class needs sakura, and if maybe even suo needs sakura and furin and he doesnt know it yet, sakura can't afford to give up on him, as a friend and as the grade captain. which is what i think sugishita is going to convey in the next chapter when they show up at his house
but yeah like i also kinda want sakura to just have a break already 😭😭 i feel so bad for him, kotoha pretty much says everything we were all talking about, like as to why sakura would take suo leaving the hardest. LIKE I KNOW that what sugishita says is going to cause something good to happen but i dread the way he's going to say it ahajshsjs
btw i really like sugishita as a character, hes the one in wbk i relate to the most. I AM NOT HATING ON HIM !! and i hope it doesnt come across like im babying sakura,,, idk its just so sad that he was finally able to be brave because of how safe he finally felt in makochi and now an important piece of that is ripped away from him, he must be in so much pain
Regarding chapter 217, seeing Suo, the child who is the leader and the one who talks to the adults who should know how to behave, have adult attitudes, and especially be an example for the children and the city, is sad and depressing. A 15-year-old boy, taking on so many responsibilities, worries, and financial difficulties, really can't sleep or eat properly when everything weighs on him; it's even hard to breathe. And yet, he still manages to smile at them, apologize for not having enough food, and emphasize that it's important for them to study, something he's not allowed to do, forcing him to give up or fulfill some obligation. Remember, he's just a boy. Children and teenagers like to connect with their friends; they don't think about obligations like those mentioned above. They simply go to school, play games, fight with each other (in a good way), tease each other, and are silly. If Suo doesn't eat, it's because he can't sit with his friends, share meals, and connect, knowing that in Bangkok-gai, children face restrictions due to a lack of sufficient food, and even those who have homes still come to eat and even take food home if they can. It's beautiful to see a child share the little they have with another. How would he feel eating while remembering them, seeing Nirei and especially Sakura eat with such gusto?
And all of this, a 15-year-old boy has to carry, it's revolting. He carries it because there's probably a system with high-ranking, imbecile adults in charge, and corruption and embezzlement are rampant, and it's a child who has to carry all of this? Well, he's going to try to end it, yes, he'll put himself in danger, that's why he needed to physically hurt his friend and break him emotionally, to leave a message: I'm good for nothing, so forget about me. How painful this is, he's visibly suffering because his true "self" is that silly, happy, provocative boy who also likes to ensure peace for his friends and protect them. He needs to keep them away, at any cost, so that he's even remembered as a villain and all that. Imagine seeing your friends right there, in the center of the chaos, the one you tried to push away, the one you did. He really needs to repress the repressible to stand out again as the one who has to be hated, and seeing the stubbornness and determination of everyone, as his main opponent, this will break him and suffocate him emotionally. He wants to act alone, and seeing himself unable to achieve that, we will cry for him, for his friends, and for ourselves too. Abandonment, loneliness, and protecting friends are a shared and parallel feeling between them; both know the pain of being left behind. And that must be why he said his seal will break, a fury will be unleashed, we will see him being relentlessly cold, for something greater. If we have a bird in a cage, and it feels the need to break free, once the door opens, it will fly quickly and feel free. Suo wants to free his people because he will also be freeing himself, and he will do whatever it takes. He will return to his friends, be a happy, mischievous fool, and have meals with his friends, play games, go swimming, and who knows, maybe Bacchus and Rakta will come to Makochi. I want it to be like that. Okay, I want to cry. This isn't right, it's sad.
Okay, fuck, I was ready to suffer alongside Sakura, I'm glad that Ume and Hiragii pointed out that Suo was a good kid and that clearly there's something more to it and they're doubting Endo's info.
Thank the stars that Kotoha is back with her introspection
Momijikawa doing us a solid one, I'm curious to see how the trio of Nirei, Momijikawa and Sugishita deal with this.
Also, u think I was right and Sugishita might know something, Suo did say he wanted to talk more with him and maybe he did, maybe he said some cryptic things and Sugishita is now starting to realise what it was all about, aside from clearly wanting to shake some sense into Sakura, I'm not crazy to believe that he might say some shit about how Suo was not going to let him leave Furin and was willing to fight Endo for it, then Sakura can't give up on Suo without getting an actual reason from the boy himself.
Overall, I really liked this chapter, will be back soon to bring you guys some analysis with panels!
and we know it's too big for suo because neither bacchus or rakta have this problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY ARE DWARFING SUO'S HANDS SPECIFICALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
okay so like. i do think these following panels were a prelude to momijikawa's arc but considering that sakura was thinking about the people he was attached to at that time, it kinda got me thinking about the present suo arc
"but i already spend all my time with them"
guess who just fucking left
"can i continue to protect everybody from outside threats?"
now ofc i cant say this for sure but there's most definitely some kind of issue or problem that sunfei is facing, that probably has nothing to do with makochi
as bofurin is right now, it cannot do anything to intervene with sunfei's situation. they only get involved when theres something going on in their turf, or if it's to do with one of them. their caution towards outsiders is an effect of this strong sense of collectiveness, i think.
this kind of thing is overriden like during roppoichizawa because the trio and tsubaki were present and shizuka is a friend of tsubakis.
but thats why suo had appeared apathetic and turned aggressive towards nirei i think; to appear as someone who had nothing to do with them, so that even by extension of nirei or sakura he couldn't be considered one of furin.
even if we take the angle that suo harmed one of furin's, that would make even less sense as that would be kind of like outright aggression towards the red chanpuru and frankly it doesn't seem likely that furin would take that direction.
so suo has already left furin, was always an outsider to makochi, and had already sworn his loyalty to a different group. but this is not going to change nirei's and sakura's resolve to help and reach suo ultimately, i think.
im going off on a slight tangent to the previous chapters, where togame tells sakura that a sakura cannot be an ume, basically establishing that sakura is going to become a different kind of leader than umemiya
now, umemiyas vision was to do with eliminating the gap between the people of makochi and the delinquents of furin, so that they could work on defending the town together from outsiders. so umemiya's vision that brings normal folks and delinquents on one side by kind of uniting them against a common antagonist, the outsiders
the logic that ume uses is that when the furin students come to know and understand normal folks, they'd start caring about them too.
and now, in this current rc arc, we have a grade captain who was an outsider, who is now chasing after an ex vice captain who is also an outsider, about whom we know nothing about and cannot understand yet.
the way suos character was set up in complete mystery, it's pretty clear that in this arc he is going to be known by his friends, especially nirei and sakura. they are characters built for gathering information and mutual understanding respectively, and right now they are more desperate than ever to truly know suo
sunfei so far seems to care quite a lot for the red chanpuru and bankokugai. it seems that he has sacrificed a lot for it, and despite it being maybe only partially voluntary, he has his people that he wants to protect.
and when they come to understand sunfei and therefore everything that he cares about, a place technically unrelated to makochi, they're now going to care about the "outsiders of furin" too. i think furins motto might have to change, then.
and we know that sakura is already technically attached to outsiders, back when he was thinking about his wish, he wanted to be with shishitoren too.
and sakura has brought together other outsider groups to align themselves with furin— something that happened because of the actions sakura took, that umemiya would've never thought of doing himself.
everything so far has shown how sakura has been slowly influencing the furin that umemiya reforged. in this arc, all these changes might accumulate to show how sakura, as a grade captain and as someone who is going to become leader someday, might end up changing the way bofurin does things definitively, i think
MB IF I JUST RAMBLED ABOUT THINGS WE ALREADY KNOW but that bit about umemiya using understanding to bridge the gap in makochi was so nice i wanted to tie it into the present arc. i was always thinking about how sakura would become a different leader from ume, and i feel like we're really going to see it in this arc. considering that ume is getting quite involved too, im looking forward to the interactions between ume and sakura regarding the suo issue.
they might have differing opinions, but i think maybe ume would still consider suo one of them. heck they might not even have a difference of opinion. but i do think people who are used to the way that bofurin usually does things might be a bit skeptical about getting involved in an external affair, esp bec technically suo is the one who left. lets see 🙂↕️
Some days ago I saw people talking about seeing Suo's fighting aura in his character tag... and that may have stayed niggling in my brain. At first I was thinking to myself like "ofc it's gonna be a dragon bc RC = dragons and at the end of this arc, Suo will have proven himself as the most noble of all the dragons". But then I saw some official art and was like "wait but the dragon is already assigned to Sugi, and Sakura is a tiger (that is probably black and white like his hair)... that means we have two out of the four legendary beasts already" and then we have this guy with a bird in his name, whose whole theme is resurrection (also literally coded in his name), and his theme colour is red......
Imagine if this arc culminates to the little falcon flying out of his golden cage and transforming into a magnificent, flaming phoenix and then raining hell on whoever took his freedom
Togame: Upholding a system you know is wrong, but having reasons™ for not abandoning it just yet that are likely related to another person within the same system
KEEL arc:
Nagato: Being forcefully kept away from support system due to some kind of threat. The person that gets hunted down by their other two friends + is The Sufferer
Gravel arc:
Shizuka: Wanting so desperately to stay in the life and comfort you’ve found, but wanting to sacrifice yourself to ensure the people around you don’t get roped into your problems
Noroshi arc: I literally do not know.
Kiryu arc:
Kiryu: Complicated family dynamics masked under a veneer of jokes and smiles. (Though it must be acknowledged that they deal with said dynamic very differently)
if you guys got any more, feel free to point them out
ok but what if at the end of Suo arc we get a battered Suo being carried on Tsuge's back as the whole class returns to Furin together? what if Nirei flicks his forehead when he regains consciousness? what if Sakura has another guilt-ridden speech about how he should've done better as a captain to keep Suo safe?
what if Suo does return to Furin and attempts to step down as vice captain but they vote him back in? what if the class is actually so offended that he dared assume they'd replace him that they force him to take them all out for dinner at Pothos?
keep thinking about how we havent seen suo at his best yet. he's always fighting guys below his skill level, never breaking a sweat or taking a hit, which is obviously intentional on niisato's part. we have no idea how strong he actually is. crazy
im not over this, the way suo looks so small, swallowed by the clothes. like a kid playing dress up with their parents clothes. a kid acting like what they think an adult person acts like instead of having "inherent" maturity
