we've all seen "Simon has night terrors that make him physically act out" but what about sleep paralysis simon

He opens his eyes but he cant move. Hes constricted by writhing veins, threatening to crush his ribs. He knows he's supposed to be free, he went to sleep in a house, in the biodome, on erid, but he’s watching blood pour down the walls and eyes leer outside the windows. he cant move, he cant talk, he can only move his eyes, Grace is still asleep and cant free him from the blood roots burrowing under his skin

But eridians watch each other sleep. A xenonite-shrouded hand touches his arm, grabs his hand, and breaks him out of the smothering paralysis.

"I hear Simon heart beat loud, fast. I am here. Wake up now."

the first thing he does when he can control his body again is wrap his arms around Rocky as tight as he can

At first I was like haha, how silly, of course people ship Markiplier and Ryan Gosling in space. Not a day goes by and I’m like, no, no, I get it. The only two human souls in space is reason enough, but to have both been sacrifices? Delicious. And Rocky is there too. Give me 10 of these please.

I'm a huge fan of the fact that the glorious movie called Project Hail Mary is still trending on this site even after months, as is the best character ever Ryland Grace and his companion Rocky the Eridian.

Simon finally feeling safe on the Hail Mary, finally letting himself believe that this isn't some kind of trick from the Eel, or the COI, or whatever God that may be watching. Finally believing that Grace really does want him safe, and happy, and alive.

Grace seeing this, finally feeling like Simon is stable enough to see the Greenhouse. I mean, the guy had a breakdown over the screen room, Grace was not going to risk his reaction to REAL PLANTS until he was sure Simon could handle it.

Grace excitedly leading Simon towards the Greenhouse. Opening the door. Watching for Simon's reaction, hopeful, but knowing it could be too much.

And it finally hits Simon.

Not relief. Not awe at the greenery, the abundance of life.

His purpose.

Been having thoughts about Simon being “the butcher” and what his place might’ve been at Eden. Obviously, the man’s killing people, and he’s killing a lot of people, but why? The easy answer is he was a soldier for Eden, he was their defense, perhaps on COI station raids, but maybe even against his own people with how crazy everything was. But what if his job was a little more meaningful than that? Eden’s #1 top priority is their tree. They love that thing so fkn much. So why not have careers catered to taking care of the tree? It’d be an honor to be a Gardener, I think. To tend the soil and feed the tree. And it’d be even more of an honor to give up your life to sustain it.

That’s what the Gardeners do; they cull Eden bodies for their tree; whether it be from old age, poor health or just a general case of cult fever, the people being culled are willing and grateful to be substance for it. Gardeners are highly respected and are good at their craft. But that’s not what Simon is. Willing sacrifices are great and all, but they’re not enough. One body every few months is not enough to sustain the tree, and you can only pick off so many members of your flock before there’s no one else to preach to. And though Eden is quite large, there are plenty of people to source from within the COI. People and supplies and information.

And that’s where Simon comes in. Simon is not culling, he’s hunting. He protects his brothers while they raid the COI stations, and he brings back prizes to his tree. And though the title may have been given to him in the literal sense, it doesn’t take long for a young mind to become warped while being exposed to so much carnage. You shut down. You stop caring. You get aggressive. It’s you, or me. Simon’s good at what he does. Maybe too good. His brothers are weary of him. What’s stopping the Butcher from turning on his own people in the name of the tree? He’s dangerous. A liability. Filament station was only meant to be a raid on physical resources, but perhaps it could be more than that. It could be a lot more. After all, what’s a couple hundred lost lives to someone like the Butcher? He’d go for it hook, line and sinker…
