Prayer nut with case, attributed to Adam Theodrici, c. 1500 - c. 1525
h 9.5cm × w 4.8cm × d 2.0cm. More details
During the Middle Ages, prayer nuts were luxury ‘toys’ for the faithful. This one was made for a wealthy Delft citizen. Kept in a copper case inside a red velvet pouch suspended from the owner’s belt, it could be opened whenever he wished to contemplate Christ’s suffering. Depicted inside are scenes of Christ Carrying the Cross and The Crucifixion.
