You hadn’t expected him to be soft.

You hadn’t expected that things were going to go well during the first date. The entire thing had been set up between your friends and his… friends? Coworkers? You weren’t entirely sure how he’d quantify the relationship he had with other people. As a rule he seemed emotionally closed off.

The first date had been simple. A meal shared privately, words exchanged. It was a little awkward to start, but by the end of it you were both smiling, and agreeing to a second date.

The second one wasn’t much different. The roof of some building, as close to some manner of privacy that could be found on the massive ship, the gold and lights muted beneath you while you enjoyed desserts and watched the stars. 

The conversation had been a little more intimate, a little more real. His jacket had been around your shoulders for the last hour of it, and he didn’t take it back until he escorted you home. 

You could hardly believe the man who was making time for you was the same Gild Tesoro who rather ruthlessly ran the entire ship with such an iron grip you’d spent most of your time here at least a little afraid of him.

The third date he brought you flowers and took you dancing. The way he led you through dances you didn’t even know had been so natural and easy you had forgotten you didn’t know them. It was so easy to move with him, to be moved by him, you were caught up in the momentum and flow of it. 

Except.

The moment when you both leaned in, you flinched, your face was already flushed from dancing, but the sudden embarrassment with everyone else around twisted your smile into concern. You were going to have to get over it, you imagined, if you were going to be his. All eyes were on him, after all, almost constantly.

There wasn’t going to be room for your shyness. 

But he was far more patient than you expected. Three dates turned into a dozen. Flowers, jewelry, clothing, anything you could ask for, anything you wanted. Chaste kisses on the crown of your head, a careful hand at your waist that never wandered too low. 

“I… would like a kiss.” You say softly, standing just a few steps inside your apartment. Tesoro was still in the hallway, never once having stepped foot inside your space, your home. “Without anyone else seeing.”

The gentle look of surprise at your request turns into an easy smile, as he steps inside your apartment, closing the door behind him. You’re still holding the most recently gifted bouquet of flowers when you feel the gold curl warmly around you.

It slips along your legs, easily moving you into a seated position as it lifts you up, bringing you to his height. You don’t see the exquisite details of the pedestal he’s put you upon, but you understand what it is. What it meant. How important you were to him.

Even before he set you upon it. Even before now, when his hand is warm against your cheek, brushing your hair aside and so carefully cradling your face. The warm exhale of breath, the quiet moment filled by two beating hearts. Dry, warm lips, sure and soft, trembling and nervous, both in need of the comfort of the other.
