Arte alucinante
I'm here already delighting over this very life-like low-relief sculpture, when she gets the paint out, and I rather loudly exclaimed "holy shit!"
I’ve been patiently waiting for a nice second-hand wood dresser to appear on fb marketplace or at Goodwill for months. Finally, I grabbed this one yesterday for $50.
My inspiration for this project are some dressers I saw at Anthropology that have gorgeous carved details. But I want my dresser to cost $200 or less rather than $2,000.
Of course I can’t add actual hand-carved wood, but I’ve got clay and some silicon molds + epoxy and a potential overconfidence in my DIY abilities.
First up, I removed the existing hardware and sanded this pretty lady down. She is now looking MUCH better without all those terrible stains (and the drawer pulls weren’t doing it for her, tbh).
Up next, I’ll give her a paint wash or three and start trying my hand at faking some carvings!
She’s paint-washed and looking dandy. I’ll give her a light sand tomorrow and get to work on some fake carvings!
So I actually ended up glazing her first to bring the wood grain back out a bit and add some depth to the color. The glaze was very finicky to work with, but did exactly what I wanted it to (a comparison of glazed vs unglazed drawers in the first pic). I have several silicon molds filled with drying resin and I will begin experimenting with “carvings” tomorrow!
Oh yeah. This is gunna work just fine. BRB. Making and then painting c. 100 flowers and vines.
She's coming along great! I’m going to wrap the foliage around the side up top and then start working on the bottom right bit.
Alas, I ran out of flowers/vines so I will need to get more epoxy this weekend to finish the bottom corner. Shes so close to being done, though! The next update will be the last once I seal her and get the new hardware added. :)
She’s DONE. Cost breakdown: $50 dresser, $30 molds, $35 epoxy, $6 paint, $8 glaze, and $4 drawer pulls. Total: $133.
I surprised even myself with this one and am so delighted by the outcome. I’ve been using her for a week and dusted her once (with the amount of seal I used, a fluffy swifter duster glides along all the finicky crevices just fine) and she seems sturdy. Time will tell! Thanks for all the kind words on this fun little journey.
don’t you know it’s not good for your hair to wash it every day. you have to use sulfate and paraben free shampoo. you have to wash your hair with conditioner instead. you should stop washing your hair for a month because actually your scalp has the natural ability to maintain itself. greasy hair can make your acne worse so make sure you wash it every day. you have to use this three step regiment on your face EVERY SINGLE night. buy this $70 serum and use it with the 10 other serums you have but don’t combine them. don’t use anything on your face except a gentle cleanser and moisturizer. do NOT use moisturizer on your face you are DESTROYING your skins natural moisture barrier! acne is just for teenagers you’ll grow out of it :) oh no but adult acne is sooooo common. just take birth control and your acne will go away. cut out all sugar and dairy and your acne will go away. actually those studies are fake, get light therapy treatments instead. take accutane and your acne will go away, only a couple of those kids killed themselves! shave your armpits because it looks better. if you shave your armpits you’re not a feminist. actually shaving your armpits is for HYGIENE. wax your legs. wax your bikini line. but waxing any part of your body can give you ugly ingrown hairs and permanently damage your skin and follicles and besides that’s the patriarchy. (but get laser hair removal instead.) don’t have an eating disorder because that’s too much but definitely do intermittent fasting. don’t eat carbs. don’t eat sugar. don’t eat fat. actually your brain uses carbs as its main energy source. actually fat is necessary but only good fat. you have to DRINK MORE WATER!!! drinking 8 glasses of water per day is a myth. burn fat and get toned by doing these exercises. but cellulite is natural and 99% of women have it so you HAVE to embrace it. take diet pills. ummm don’t you know those are meth?? take NATURAL diet supplements for weight loss. take THESE vitamins to cure your depression and clear your skin and make you better at sex and make your vision better and speed up your metabolism and make your digestion better and make you focus better. i know the ONLY right answer but you have to pay me for it. follow my blog! listen to my podcast! subscribe to my email newsletter! buy my snake oil!!
16 frame shooting star animation. January 2022-September 2024 Needlepoint
Frames from my shooting star gif. 16 frames total. Each frame is 8x6.5 inches on a 10” mesh. Designed and animated in photoshop and needlepointed by me. I started drafting this 1/14/22 and finished animating it 9/25/24. It took approximately two years and eight months to finish. This is one of the largest projects I’ve ever worked on and I’m very happy with how it turned out.

So, some tips from my experience on shopping for clothes and wearables:
look for good, reliable brands and stores for clothes and shoes. I have a few stores I go back to reliably because their stuff is good. Sometimes a bit expensive, but they last. It's worth shelling out the extra $$ because their stuff will do me for longer.
Get fittings for stuff like shoes and bras. Getting stuff that fits well means that it'll last longer and be more comfortable.
learn how to do some basic repairs yourself. You don't have to know how to sew a whole outfit to be able to put a button back on.
Learning how to do more serious repairs and/or make clothes (sewing, knitting, etc.) can be as big or as small a job as you want. Some people like doing it as a hobby, some make it a side-hustle. It's especially handy if you have a non-standard body type or specific preferences. And it's easier than ever to get into nowadays with online resources and library books.
Taking better care of your clothes makes them last longer. Read the care instructions and do what you can to follow them. Some stuff will last much longer if you wash them by hand or on the delicate cycle, then hang them to dry. More elbow grease, less money going out.
Not all second-hand stores are created equal. Some are better for different stuff.
as a side note, I'd generally recommend getting base layers (underwear, socks, bras, undershirts, etc.) new. Just to be on the safe side.
it also helps if you're buying stuff that can be worn in a bunch of ways and for a long time. You might have heard of a capsule wardrobe before - same basic idea.
On repairing/takinf care of clothing: I would recommend investing in a clothing de-piller/fabric shaver!
Helps remove built-up fuzz and fabric pills from clothing, making them feel brand new again. Also useful if you have a sensory thing about pilled fabric.
Here's a quick before and after comparison of a 5yr+ sweatshirt I did the other day:
Small difference, but it literally feels like i just bought it yesterday.
I started with a battery version and upgraded to a rechargeable one. The one I linked above is the one I currently have. The rechargeable version doesn't last as long on a charge as the battery version does on 2 batteries and it takes several hours to recharge, but it's useful in a roundabout way as it keeps me from stooping over for several hyperfixated hours at a time, which saves my back.
If you get one, I'd recommend not removing the guard at first as well as practicing on some older pieces you wouldn't mind if the blade nicks a hole in it as you get familiar with using it.
For optimal use, I've found the best practice is to spread the item on a flat surface like a table and use your forearms to tension the fabric flat (ESP knits and other stretchy material!) while you use your hands and wrists to move the shaver around. Also be careful on seams & stitching and don't force it if it's not shaving an area 'properly'; move it around in different directions, do circles, etc.
Hope this helps someone out there!
This is great advice!
That said, we don't endorse buying on Amazon. So see if you can find one from another retailer, fam!
De pilling with one of those shavers does cut the fiber though and reduces the lifespan of the garment.
You can get the same results with less damage with a fabric comb like this which also happens to be awesome for removing pet fur from clothes making it a multi purpose tool.
Also doesn't need batteries or charging or replacement sticky paper so it's cheaper to own over time than other tools for the purposes mentioned.
Especially since it's simple construction means that you can fix most of the ways it might break, like dropping the handle.
It's a good tool.
I love her!

I’ve put all of the fabric painting tutorials into one big photo post.

Maybe this format is better?
