i’m in the middle of writing my dissertation on the european witch trials and the more research i do into it the more it bothers me that the whole thing has become such a gimmick today, like the town i live in runs a nightly ‘ghost tour’ which ends on the hill where they hung 12 women for witchcraft in the mid 17th century. the reality is the witch trials were a crime against humanity, the victims were mostly children, widows and elderly women and some historians have estimated that the total number of people tortured and killed was upwards of half a million. it’s such a torrid chapter of human history but it’s viewed almost entirely as a joke outside of academic spheres and i think we all know the reason why

I watched a documentary on witch hunts in Europe and they explained how people would accuse each other as witches as a form of “social cleansing” meaning the villages would just get rid of people they didnt like (mostly women of any age, but older women were more likely to have age spots which they said were signs of Satan) or didnt obey commands (such as a maid not accepting sexual advances from the man owning the house, man would call her a witch, and gruesome torture would follow) and then these ideas travelled to the Americas

My mom took a trip to Salem for work and she said people who live there do not like all the gimmicky witch things because the Salem witch trials were a tragedy and is incredibly disrespectful to the innocent lives lost during this time.

When I see people sharing so much of their kids' lives, I think about that one time my child told a joke, I shared that joke with ONE FRIEND in a private conversation, and my child said "can you please ask me next time, before you tell people something about me?"

And, yes, I absolutely should. So I apologized, and now I ask.

"I love that video of you, can I show it to a friend?"

"Can I tell a friend about how clever you were just now?"

"Can I share this in the family group chat?"

"Can I show your art to grandma and grandpa?"

And it's not like my kids don't like when I share their jokes and puns and fun moments. They love it! But they want to have control over what I share with people. Even without their faces or their names. Even people we know and trust.

And they deserve to have that control.
