Diabolical has such an interesting take on Homelander at the time of his debut, and I literally can't stop thinking about it

What do you mean Homelander left the lab with parts of that sweet boy Vogelbaum said he was still intact? His solution to dealing with terrorists was "hey guys, please surrender and I will take your concerns about the environment to the right people so your cause is still heard". He was oddly child-like throughout his first mission, like a little boy playing at being a hero the way he's seen in movies or comic books

It also makes his and Stillwell's relationship very interesting. I'm pretty sure he's like 18 or 20 or something in that episode (I read somewhere he was eighteen but that could have been wrong), and Stillwell is already priming him for that weird relationship they had in the show, and I just can't help but wonder when they met

I also really liked that he kind of blacked out when he first got really violent. It looked like this disassociation of his was triggered by the violent mistakes he made and everyone yelling and screaming which has some fascinating implications

Relapsing on analyzing Homelander inspired by this post

I think the argument of "terrible things were done to him, but he was a grown man and could have made the right choices" is ALWAYS a contradictory argument. It equates to saying that you've taken into consideration the extreme and unimaginable abuse in his childhood, but then suddenly forgetting it by making a fundamentally opposing statement: that he had every opportunity to act differently later in life.

This reasoning doesn't ever fully stand because if we agree that his childhood was irrevocably harmful to him, the logical consequence is understanding that his actions are determined by his past trauma.

It's causal determinism in psychology: sufficient cause determines effect. Extensive abuse in his childhood implies future inability to properly function, or rather, to function as society expects a person to function. Homelander's trauma is limitless, the torture he endured is not applicable to human understanding. Expecting him to just choose the "right" thing is unsustainable.

The concept of right and wrong isn't innate but absorbed from circumstances and people during our upbringing. If Homelander was treated with humanity from the start, he would have been different. We aren't born with innate cruelty, but neither with established morals and beliefs, which are all formed in the stages of development by mimicking what we observe. So it isn't his fault that in his early years, these concepts were wrongly internalized, which led him to be the way he was. He couldn't have acted differently, and he couldn't have made the right choices because in order to be able to do that, it would have required him a different past.

Some could argue that not everybody with a horrible upbringing turned out to be horrible or on the existence of free will in general. However, hurt people hurt people. The two things are connected. Nobody agrees with his actions or judges them as morally right. People just shed tears on the grave of his fated tragic life.

#5 Do not interrupt the lord's sleep

Mentions of period & blood

Strangely enough I am obsessed with the thought of Homelander being very precious about his sleep. He probably doesn't get a lot of it because he's busy and he's most likely conditioned to not need as many hours. And his nightmares probably already impact the quality of his sleep. ANYHOO. I am very fond of Homelander being grumpy and eepy as soon as he hits the hay.

He wants to be cuddled ofc but the man👏 wants 👏 to 👏 eep 👏 he will wake up when he needs to ofc (he's an early rises for sure) and he will wake up for his needs wink wink BUT he's protective of the hours he gets.

One example is when you get your period (which of course is more of an issue for him than you bcs it affects the quality of cuddles he gets), realising in the middle of the night after you get up to go to the bathroom (how annoying must it be to go all the way to that bathroom, speaking as an en-suite bedroom person). You bled through so you clean up, change and come back to find the sheets bloody too. You'd shake him awake all "I'm sorry honey, you gotta wake up. I need to change the sheets."

He is. Not happy. Not only is he not interested in this (he's not exactly easily grossed out) but he is tiredddd. Let him sleep. He whinges and moans. But it just sounds like grumpy growly murmurs voiced into the pillow that he gathers up and smushes his face into. Hair is all over the place, blanket pulled off halfway thanks to you but it doesn't matter. Even if you roll him over, he will just pull the pillow over his face with his back flat to the bed.

Once he realises that you just won't stop bugging him (and making noise) he looks at you with one eye open, face still all smushed up from feeling groggy and tired. While you're actually asking him questions like

"Where do you keep the spare sheets. I need to change them." Bcs you've looked throughout all of the closets around the bed and found nothing!!

"Don't know." It's barely coherent.

"What do you mean you don't know??"

"Someone comes here when I'm not in and changes them. I'll call them in." He reaches over for the phone on his side. (Enjoy thinking about how nice his voice would be all raspy and gravelly 🥰)

"No! Are you crazy? No way am I going to stand here while a Vought employee changes sheets I bloodied up! That's insane. I'll go find something."

Cue a montage of you looking through every cupboard available until you find them in like the dumbest space. He's already snoring away on the couch with his fur blankie bcs he got bored of the hunt for bedsheets and waiting for you to change them.

You feel bad about waking him up again after you change them but you know he would be upset and pout all day long if you just went back to bed without him and starfished all night long. It's a lose lose situation but one is worse than the other!

Homelander is surprisingly well adjusted, really. Though considered that his average way of acting counts as such, it still says a lot. I think a lot of his interactions boil down to scripts he's memorized. You can see him struggle when things derail from them. Also, 20 years of wearing a human suit and pretending to be a fully actualized person probably also helped to get him to where we first meet him.

Yes, totally. Over the course of the show, we've seen his ability to improvise off-script get worse and worse as his mental health has spiralled post-Madelyn's death. Because she was his primary source of external validation and the one to regulate his emotions - because all the psychological conditioning he underwent as a child to ensure he craves love and cares so much about others' opinions of him means he can't internally validate himself or regulate his own feelings well - once she was gone he'd lost his psychological tether. It's soooo sad to me how his act of self-liberation in killing her at the end of S1 set off his own mental collapse. I don't think he realised just how dependent on her he truly was. I mean, even all that time later in S5, when he finally has his psychotic break, who does he hallucinate? Madelyn.

I feel a lot of his ability to maintain a stable facade in the 20 or so years between leaving the lab and S1 are down to Madelyn essentially having him on a leash. It sucks because he's absolutely right when he talks at various points in the show about having no freedom, but Vought literally constructed his psyche to need a handler who'll call him a good boy and keep him in check. He didn't have the capacity to keep himself healthily afloat without one! But unfortunately him, in his life, kept isolated in Vought's corporate bubble and unable to ever conceive of an existence beyond it even as he ascended to godhood, he never met anyone who genuinely cared about him as a person or saw him as more than an immovable obstacle to manoeuvre around (apart from Ryan, who obviously couldn't and shouldn't have been expected to fulfil any steadying role for him, considering he was his child, and who in the end lost all empathy for his dad anyway - and possibly Black Noir, although it's so hard to know for definite what his actual feelings on Homelander were).

Homelander could live in fantasies where the people around him who were just straight up manipulating him or deathly afraid and hated him actually loved him, but they weren't ever true - and ultimately just contributed to his troubles discerning reality from unreality. But this will happen when you are brought up to embody a corporate-spun character 24/7 and are not allowed a personhood beyond that! If your superhero persona is all you feel you have - if John hasn't been allowed to exist outside of Homelander in the same way say Annie exists outside of Starlight - then of course what is actually real versus what is fake is gonna be very messy in your mind, and you will start acting in ways that freak out most people who come into contact with you.

He just... he doesn't know how to just be outside of performing for people. And it pains me. 💔
