The ART of DISSENT

War Paint is a multimedium art narrative about a graffiti writing saboteur, instigating rebellion in a totalitarian police state. This book examines the roles art and entertainment play in both cultural pacification and political agitation. Fusing fiction with nonfiction, it includes illustration, poetry, a series of incendiary essays, and two sequential short stories. The ART of DISSENT aims to inform, inspire, and activate a new generation of Anarchist propagandists.

When trying to remain neutral during a conflict with power, you're actually siding with power. By doing nothing in the presence of injustices, you're actually siding with injustice. As Howard Zinn said, "You cannot be neutral on a moving train." When you get up in the morning, go to work, and return home again without ever causing any trouble, it doesn't necessarily mean you're being a good person -- it may actually mean you're a coward. We need to change the way we think about what makes up a good person. Just because you mean no direct harm to others, it doesn't mean you're automatically a good person -- it probably just means you don't want to get involved. Good people get involved. As Martin Luther King said, "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." I've been told I need to focus on what's beautiful, instead of all the ugly in the world -- but I argue if we don't start addressing all this ugly, there won't be much beauty left. There is a difference between maintaining a balance and constantly practicing escapism. If perception is reality, then truth is merely a matter of perspective -- this can make even hard facts negotiable. How important is factual information, if we don't find those facts agreeable? After all, a fact is only the truth when we believe it. For example, if you can convince the majority that two plus two makes five, it does. The fact that two and two makes four no longer matters, because the majority doesn't believe it. This is why nothing you believe is absolute, and why dogma is always potentially dangerous. This is because the majority only develop a questioning attitude suited to defending the values and ideologies provided by an established authority on any given topic. The average person doesn't really engage themselves in a lot of independent thinking, they simply adopt the opinions and information provided to them by sources they've been conditioned to trust. We'll question the intentions of our peers, but not those of a multinational corporation spending millions of dollars to influence our daily decisions. The majority of us wouldn't think of challenging our government, the laws were expected to obey, or the churches we attend. Why is that? It's the path of least resistance, and there's only one real reason for any of it -- it's what's most convenient. Truth -in the broad sense of the word- is a concept created to put minds at ease, when in reality, I think truth is more like an endless pursuit. A pursuit that needs to be engaged collectively in order to help broaden our narrow perspectives and beliefs. This is my first multimedia art book, and it's available to purchase on my website for $15. It contains 46 pages of concept art, poetry, prose, and comes with a spoken word DVD. With this project, I hope to inspire viewers to engage themselves in sociopolitical change.
