Nearly 80 years after it was last seen, the eastern cougar will be officially recognised by US conservation authorities as ‘extinct’.
Following a four-year review, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) will next month remove the eastern cougar from its list of endangered and threatened species — where it has been for the last 43 years.
The big cat, which once roamed North America from Canada to South Carolina, will no longer receive Endangered Species Act protections.
Cougars - along with their cousins panthers and pumas - were once the most widely distributed land mammal in the western hemisphere, but have been driven out from two-thirds of land that they once occupied, wildlife biologists have said.

Antares Field Guide Training Centre - "where you will learn about the world around us". and many other subjects in between. Antares offers educational holidays and field study courses. Antares is offering 6-week long courses that will prepare you for a career in Field Guiding. This does not necessarily mean that only aspirant Field Guides will benefit from the course. Anyone who has a genuine love of the bush and would like to know more about it will find the course rewarding. The course follows the syllabus set out by FGASA, The Field Guides Association of Southern Africa. The subjects that will be covered are diverse, covering topics such as astronomy, geology, anything to do with fauna and flora and a host of others. Emphasis will be placed on practical guiding techniques as well as theoretical training.
We run FGASA endorsed Field Guide training courses on the Balule Nature Reserve which borders the world famous Kruger National Park.

Antares has been running FGASA endorsed Field Guide training courses (also known as Game Ranger courses) since 2000 and we have seen over 250 students pass through our doors since then.
Our students, who have come from every continent in the world and a great variety of countries, spend either 23 weeks or 88 days living and learning at the field guide training centre on the Balule Nature Reserve, a 40 000 hectare “Big 5″ reserve that borders the world famous Kruger National Park. We can accommodate a maximum of 8 students at any one time.
In the early days of guiding, we were affectionately referred to as Game Rangers and to many of the old school this name is still used. However over the past 15-20 years the guiding industry has become more professional and there are now different levels of guiding qualifications that one can aspire to.
