It’s finally happened.

After almost a decade on this site, I found another Tumblr user in the wild. I stopped to tie my shoe with rainbow laces this morning outside the silversmith at Colonial Williamsburg, and I heard it.

“I like your shoelaces.”

Oh. Oh no.

I responded the only way I could. “Thanks.” And then I reluctantly added, “I stole them from the president…and if that makes sense to you, I’m very sorry.”

The poor man, in full Colonial dress, stared at me for a long moment. And then burst into laughter. And said, “I haven’t thought about that in YEARS and this has never happened to me before.”

Yeah. Me neither. Not until today.

As someone who’s living with a middle school social studies teacher, all the posts along the lines of “why did we never learn about this historical event in school” just make me go “because your teacher was supposed to cover all of US history in one year, and they didn’t get to the Revolutionary War until Halloween because they were urged to slow down the progression of the lessons because a more senior teacher was running behind, and they didn’t get to the Civil War until Valentine’s Day because the school kept scheduling every special event during social studies because there’s no end-of-grade testing for that subject, and they didn’t get to WWI until May because they were sick for a few days and the substitute couldn’t do much more than babysit, and now they’re having to do the entire Cold War in two days, so that’s why you didn’t hear about the lesbian inventor of the circus peanut. They would have loved to tell you about the lesbian inventor of the circus peanut!”

So I just looked up this "the foxhole court" and the series looks completely fucked like it has more trigger warnings than 'to kill a Mockingbird' and 'the diary of a young girl'. And I haven't read the foxhole books but everything I can find on the series seems super fucked up. Like what's the appeal of the books even? It just seems like tragedy porn for non-queers i.e. Euphoria. If anyone cares to explain this to me it's very welcome.

So yes, the series has a lot of heavy subject matter and covers a lot of dark topics. And yes, not all of those topics are handled well. Even within the fandom, it's pretty widely acknowledged that there are some things that the author got really wrong.

But, BUT! It's not just tragedy porn, and I think it does the series an enormous injustice to sum it up as that.

Nearly all the characters are problematic in some way, but they're supposed to be. They're all a bunch of traumatized, messed up people, trying to pick up the pieces and move forward. The author allows them to be messy and fucked up when they need to be, and yet you cannot help but root for them even when they're acting terribly. They are simply the most real feeling characters I've ever seen.

The plot is insane and requires a larger than average suspension of disbelief, but that's part of the fun, because you never know what is going to happen next. It grabs you by the throat and drags you along for the most batshit ride any book series has ever taken me on. It's been my longest hyperfixation, it revolutionized my understanding of healthy relationships and consent, and has completely altered my brain in ways I cannot fully explain.

There is tragedy, yes. There is trauma and pain. But there is also hope and goodness and found family. There finding love and finding a dream and learning to heal.

The books are about fighting to survive, but they're also more than that. They're about fighting to live.
