SB 12-Lilo and Stitch, Islands of Colonial Love

Research Area 51 is a US Air Force facility in southern Nevada whose primary purpose is unknown to the public, which has led to its use as a subject of conspiracy theories (wikipedia). Queen Liliuokwalani “was the last monarch and only queen regent of the Kingdom of Hawaii” (wikipedia). The Mississauga (closely related to Ojibwa) “are a sub tribe of the Anishinaabe-speaking First Nations people located in southern Ontario, Canada (wikipedia). “The Mi’kmaq are a First Nations band” native to Atlantic Canada, many of whom speak Mi’kmaq (wikipedia).

Reflect Lilo and Stitch do not want to belong to a nation-state, as they both deviate pretty far from what the government might want or expect from its citizens, but they don’t seem to live in one in the film anyway. Hawaii is full of native people as well as foreigners, who aren’t particularly associated with the governing body. However, both Lilo and Stitch want to feel a sense of belonging, which could possibly be more prominent in a nation-state where history, language, and traditions are the same.

SB 11

Research 1. Haifa is the third largest city in northern Israel and is a seaport. 2. Gaza and the West Bank refers to an area in territorial dispute that includes the West Bank and Gaza strip of the Palestinian territories. 3. Handala is a character created by Naji Salim al-Ali and represents Palestinian defiance. 4. BDS campaign, short for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement, tries to pressure Israel into ending its occupation of Palestinian land, Arab-Palestine equality, and allow Palestinian refugees to return as a global movement.

2)   Research Gay marriage in California has been a subject of heated debate for quite a while now. The counter-narrative here is that maybe people of LGBTQ+ orientation don’t need marriage to be equal because that just gives power to marriage as a social/religious construct.

3)   Reflect Here we see heterosexuality get questioned as to whether it is more valid than homosexuality (or LGBTQ+ orientations). The marriage standard upholds heteronormativity in places that same-sex marriage has not been allowed, but if same-sex couples did not seek validation for their relationships through marriage, perhaps that could give some power back to them, in that if your relationship is valid without marrying, then what is the point?

(Kai Nikolayev) I was born with a defect stemming from my father’s biological enhancements. Most people think my defect is pretty handy, and I have to agree. Remembering information the first time I encounter it really helps me in my line of work. I’ve managed to learn 3 languages, a couple martial art forms, and target profiles among other things in a pretty short amount of time. Unfortunately, this can backfire on me when I am fed lies or I encounter anything but the truth the first time around.

Kai’s defect is extremely uncommon, and he definitely knows this. When people marvel at this ability, he may act nonchalant, but he secretly relishes in what he’s capable of. It has been the single most important part of his success in both growing up and in his work. He possesses nothing else more precious to him.

short story. One day I lost my most precious possession. That was a fight against the Evil Axis. My friend Kai and I were fighting against the guardians from the Axis and we could have won the fight. However, one of our friends betrayed us and the enemy knew our plan before we went for them. Kai and I were both badly injured. I got a shot near my neck and my ring from my parents blocked that shot and saved my life. However, I lost it…Kai got heavily punched on his head and he lost his super-ability and memories. We lose that fight, and, also our precious possessions.

Sleep Dealer-S8

Near future reflection Technological-The contact lenses used by node workers could be the future of current wearable tech such as Google Glass. Google Glass attempts to allow you to see an augmented world, but the node workers’ contacts were for giving the workers an entirely different view. Socioeconomic-When people sell their memories on TruNode, it makes me think of YouTube. Even though you don’t pay the uploader, the uploader can make money via advertising by uploading videos that could be about them, or their experience/expertise, etc. Ecological-As the government dams more water sources, more of the land becomes hard to work. We’ve been damming water sources for ages, and there seems no reason that we would stop now, especially being in the middle of a drought. 

Border city reflection (of New York City) Technological-Subways/public transportation will be important, and may or may not evolve. As a poor migrant, I would seek the cheapest form of transportation possible, and only use it to either find or get to/from work. If the current transportation were to get cheaper, it could also become more dangerous for richer users. Socioeconomic-New York city is full of homeless and jobless people who would and will survive harsh conditions and extreme emergencies, but also would be greatly effected by shortages and therefore increased prices. The homeless/jobless population of New York City is not going away anytime soon. It’s highly possible I’d end up as one of the homeless as a poor migrant. Ecological-There’s already very little in the way of natural environment, and air pollution is quite a problem. I predict that it will continue to get worse. There will be more deaths from air pollution as it gets worse, which would be the least of my worries as a poor migrant, but would still pose a threat to me if I were to live on the street.

Ngugi wa Thiong’o-S7

Research The Mau Mau Revolution/Uprising/Rebellion took place between 1952 and 1960 in Kenya, and involved Kikuyu groups — collectively called Mau Mau — and parts of the British army. Ngugi wa Thiong’o is a Kenyan founder/editor of Mutiiri who writes in English and Gikuyu. Reflect-Structure wa Thiong’o Writes about colonialism and how it appears in an ecological way. He wrote, “It was strange to see the forest retreating as the pyrethrum fields advanced.” This is how English colonialism changed the land from forest to farm/crop land, which wouldn’t have happened on its own. Reflect-Counter-narrative When wa Thiong’o and his mother are coming back from the hospital, he says the bus drivers don’t charge them. This shows how people are still doing nice things for each other and are carrying on with their life, despite European colonialization. Sketch

1) Research 1.The Hitchiti resided in present-day Georgia, and were an indigenous tribe known for being industrious and honest. 2. Craig Womack writes and teaches Native American literature and wrote the novel, Drowning in Fire.

2) Reflect “They had no animal near them, but, because they first saw the light, they became the leading clan.” -Womack, Drowning in Fire This shows how rooted in tradition Womack’s world is. The stories told to the following generations are historical and traditional.

Myths: Izanagi/Izanami The Firebird Walpurgisnacht Chaos Menes (Egypt) Cheonjiwang Bonpuri

Counter-narrative: La Llorona’s master narrative can be seen when Cherrie Moraga says, “…La Llorona tells the tale of a woman who is sexually betrayed by her man, and…she kills their children.” The counter-narrative is seen when she states, “I am convinced that La Llorona is every Mexican woman’s story, regardless of sexuality. She is sister to us all.” The master narrative of Izanami and Izanagi is that the two created the islands of Japan and Izanagi brought forth the sun, moon, and storm gods on his own. The counter-narrative could be that the story heavily supports that men are superior to females, as their first children are deformed because Izanami, the woman, spoke first to Izanagi.

Research

1. The Gila Internment Camp was built for Japanese Americans as an internment camp during World War II.

2. The Densho project attempts to collect stories and documents pertaining to Japanese-American internment during World War II.

Reflect-Structures A.K. writes about racism, which we see when Kane goes to Chinatown and fakes being a Chinaman to avoid being arrested, as police didn’t understand the difference between Chinese and Japanese people.

Reflect-People Kane Araki is living in a Japanese internment camp, and has spontaneously grown wings. At the end of the story, Kane loses his arm and wings.

Breath, Eyes, Memory-S3

Research 1. Breath, Eyes, Memory tells the story of Sophie Caco’s childhood and was written by Edwidge Danticat. 2. Tonton Macoute, though renamed in 1970, was a Haitian paramilitary special operations force named after the Haitian-Creole myth Tonton Macoute.

Reflect “These people do not know who they are, but if you see a lot of trouble in your life, it is because you were chosen to carry part of the sky on your head.” -Danticat I felt this passage was very nice, and it reflects how difficulty and oppression would be viewed in Danticat’s world. If someone finds their life to be full of struggles, then they are important to the world because they lend their strength to all who live under this sky.

[name omitted], or “Anthismenes Karisi”, is an artist who dabbles in as many artistic fields as she can get her hands on. Whilst her best — and so far, favorite — medium is pencil, she likes to experiment with music, digital art, and paper working (origami, cutouts, scrapbooking, etc.), among other art forms. Although versed in the ways of Adobe Illustrator and some of Photoshop, she is too cheap to buy a copy for herself. She wishes to gain more experience in textiles, calligraphy, sculpture, ikebana, and wood/metalworking as well. In high school, she received an award for her video, “Reflections-Together We Can”, an honorable mention for a cereal box graphic design contest, worked on a short series of comic strips for a class assignment, and gained quite a reputation for her quirky nail designs. She loves travel, culture, and language, having visited over 15 countries to date. Despite being a big reader, her true love is film.
