Is it cheating to say I already had the chances to take up my dream hobbies? In fact, and if anything, I got quite caught up in them and priced myself a little out of the means of continuing with them
Custom building computers, film photography, fursuiting, car collecting, cycling, roller skating (and skate customization), audiophile obsession - Iāve kind of dabbled with all of the hobbies that I could have once dreamed of, and through my own sheer stupidity (and a number of unfortunate life circumstances), Iāve lost myself the ability to participate in my biggest one of all; automotive
I never quit while I was ahead; I never recognized when I had a good thing going and I kept chasing an unrealistic goal of a kind of perfection that was simply impossible
But I do believe cars/automotive will be my answer
When I eventually reach a point of stability and comfort in my life again, I would adore being able to fully customize and order a car entirely of my choosing and have the fun, sporty runabout that can properly be mine
Not a project, not something pre-owned, not something I stumbled into - just mine
I want to feel what it was like driving down Route 27 and 225 behind the wheel of something I really and truly enjoy again
I want to feel the chassis hand off front load to the rear suspension as I rotate around the apex of a steep corner. I want to feel that surefooted (but linear) bite of well-tuned performance brakes as I leave the straightaway and prepare to enter the next turn
I want to hear the whistle of a turbo or the whine of a supercharger, or even just the rush of intake as I ease into the pedal and climb, and climb, and climb
I want the beating heart of a high performance engine, the tail-happy playfulness of rear-wheel drive, or the almost-physics-defying mechanical grip of a fixed all-wheel drive system
I want to watch the cockpit extend around me and the trees and lines blur past me
I want to do that all with a smile on my face, with Paradis or Mandolin Orange echoing in the background, with the dappled shadows of all the leaves and branches all around
But enthusiast cars are few and far between these days, and those that have stuck around are mostly out of reach. The ones that are within reach are so tech-laden that they just donāt retain the same character or edge, and Iām not sure Iāll ever get to experience that same thrill and energy again, especially having worked in the industry and dealt with the backend of it
I was the kid that squandered privilege, so it seems fitting that I learn to live and enjoy a life without those things that were wasted on me until I can appreciate them again
