There is nothing lowkey about using ai in fandom and honestly in ANY CREATIVE OUTLET. Fuck you. How are you supposed to get better at writing if you don’t- you know, WRITE?
Up until returning home, Marty’s Walkman worked fine. He knows this for a fact because he cannot function without it. Skating to school? Music. Cleaning his room? Music. Any long stretch of silence? He is battling it with music. Preferably something loud and full of squealing guitars; something that will leave his ears ringing when he reaches his destination.
Unfortunately, he was denied this small pleasure while on his adventures. Can you imagine how catastrophic it would be if someone in 1955 saw one of these? Doc had said, eyes wide and wild. Marty had gone along willingly enough, even if he burned for his Walkman the same way he had seen his mother burn for her next drink. While he understands the fabric of time and reality much less than Doc does, he understood very well just how likely it would be for his Walkman, and the tape inside, to get damaged. It was preferable to leave it stowed safely inside Doc’s garage.
So how is it that now that he is back home, safe in a bedroom that is almost (almost) his own, his Walkman is totally busted?
Sure, it looks fine. But when he tries to play the tape–

Nothing.
He has tried to clean it, tried checking the tape for damages, tried to replace the batteries. Nothing. It all leads him back to the same place.

Until, one day:

Marty slips the headphones off. “What the hell?”
Padding out of his room, he finds Emerson locked in conversation with George, whose notes are strewn half-hazardly across the dining room table. In an hour or two, Lorraine will come home and playfully rib him – George, honey, how will we eat on top of your next manuscript? – but for now nothing matters but how he will get his leading hero from Point A to Point B.
Marty clears his throat, and both of their heads snap up in sync. “Emmy,” he jerks his head towards his bedroom.
Emerson murmurs, “one second,” to George and stands with her chair grumbling against the floorboards. She follows Marty into his bedroom, where she finds him pacing from wall to wall. “What’s going on?”
He shoves the Walkman at her chest. “Listen to this.”
“Oh! You fixed it?”
“No – uh – no. Do you recognize this song? Because I had Motley Crue in there and that is not–”
“–this is The All-American Rejects!”
“The…who?”
“The All-American Rejects,” Emerson says again. “Holy shit, I love them. Move Along is one of the best albums ever made. Except for maybe American Idiot. But they didn’t start making music until, like, the 2000’s. How do you have this?”
“I don’t! It just started playing.”
Emerson hums curiously and clicks the next button. Immediately, her eyes light up. “It’s playing Avril Lavigne now.” Another click. “And Fall Out Boy. And Olivia Rodrigo. And Waterparks. Dude,” she sheds the headphones so she can hand them back to Marty, “this is basically a radio station from the future.”
“Whoa.” Marty turns the Walkman carefully in his hands, inspecting every angle. It looks the same as it always has: a little busted, but overall in good condition. “All the time travel must have…fried it or something.” Then, deflating, “but Motley Crue…”
Emerson bursts into laughter. “I’m sure we can get you another tape.”
Seeing people go !! But- but- Mike’s eyes linger on Will’s dnd book! Byler hope! Is honestly just depressing.
If you can’t watch that scene and realize it’s him being emotional that it’s all over- essentially their childhood- the final campaign has came to a close- then I don’t know what to tell you. He’s looking at all of their binders, and maybe yeah always mourning the fact that Jane’s is not there.
But yall will take that 2 second shot and insist that he’s looking at WILL’s binder and run with it saying that Byler was supposed to be canon. Oh and that Mike still has the painting Will made him so there for Mike is a closeted homosexual. WILL TOLD MIKE JANE WANTED HIM TO MAKE THE PAINTING OFC HE HUNG IT UP.
It’s such a cope bc we finally saw the ‘emotional weight’ Finn was asked to carry and it was for Jane’s sacrifice. ‘He didn’t say I love you back!’ Who knows why he didn’t ! Honestly it was probably just bad writing ! This whole season was !
All of this to say is this further proves that they never gave a shit about Jane and are shedding no tears over her death. More concerned with Will not kissing any boys.
(YES I know they’re more upset about the queer baiting but that STILL proves my point to be more upset about that the the insufferable brothers showing the victim needs to sacrifice herself in the end and that they think victims don’t deserve happy endings)
People being genuinely more upset that Will and Mike didn’t make out than Jane dying goes to show that fandom will always prioritize a male character over a female one.
Was bylers done dirty? Absolutely. Do I understand they’re more upset about the queer baiting and being lead on by the insufferable brothers? Yes.
However every list I see where people are listing their issues with the finale heavily centers on Will not getting his happy ending and MAYBE a mention of Jane fucking dying. You know- the trauma victim who only had very fleeting moments of happiness with a family she finally found only to sacrifice herself in the end? All for a town who never know her and to eventually be forgotten by history? Like she never existed? Yes Mike will write about EL but Jane will be forgotten.
And all I see are people blubbering about Will not kissing any boys. Shut up. Sorry your ship isn’t canon but way to go showing that fandom will always prioritize a man’s happiness over a woman’s.
Also I know Will was traumatized too but you cannot seriously compare his to Jane’s. She’s a literal lab experiment.
