The farm animal sanctuary movement in Brazil is not as big as in America and parts of Europe. The pet rescue scene is much bigger, but the country already has a few vegan sanctuaries where animals otherwise seen as food commodities are given the chance to follow their natural instincts and become animal rights ambassadors.
One of these sanctuaries is Vale da Rainha. Home to 100 animals, who they call 'masters', Vale da Rainha has a strong focus on spirituality and learning from the animals. Led by Patricia Varela Favano and Vitor Favano, a wife-and-husband team, they look after the animals on a farm in the south of Minas Gerais state, not far from the border with São Paulo State.
Patricia has penned a book telling the stories of 17 masters. Called Aos Pés dos Mestres (At the Masters's Feet), each story is narrated in the first person and the objective is to help readers rescue their own humanity through the plight of the masters who were lucky enough to find a home at the sanctuary.
In order to raise funds, they promote vegan dinners, yoga weekends and other types of events that fit in with the ethos of the place. Their Instagram account is full of heart-melting pictures and videos of Patricia and Vitor's love-ins with the masters. For those who can read in Portuguese, her writing is often mind-blowingly moving and deep. A truly special place that deserves support.

The story of a Palestinian child martyr (via From محمد الفاتح)
Back in the year 2000, this boy used to skip school just to go clash with the temporary entity occupation soldiers, until the school called his parents. His mother went to the school, found out, scolded him harshly, and even beat him out of fear for his safety.
Every single day, he would still go back to the clashes. Not only that, he would stand in front of tanks, dancing and singing: “Even if they break my bones, I won’t crawl. Even if they demolish my home, I won’t be afraid.” Then he would throw stones.
His cousin Shadi was killed, and his family, terrified for him, locked him inside the house. But he managed to escape through the water pipes leading out of the house, running off to throw stones again. Many times, his mother had to drag him back home right from the middle of the clashes.
One night, the boy dreamt of Shadi telling him, “Come avenge me.” That same night, his mother also dreamt of Shadi telling her, “Let him come to me.” She felt it was a divine message—that her son’s martyrdom was near.
A French photographer named Laurent captured this iconic picture of him, from behind, throwing a stone at a Merkava tank. The image spread widely. Ten days later, on November 8, 2000, as he bent down to pick up a stone, a 500-caliber bullet pierced his neck and came out the other side. His story ended in an instant.
This child challenged a tank with just a stone. This child was the son of An’am Odeh, who for six years after his martyrdom would still take his schoolbag and go to school, searching for him among the students.
He sang: “Even if they poison the water, I won’t mind. Even if they demolish my home, I won’t be afraid. Even if they break my bones, I won’t crawl. I’ll gather my broken bones, and make a slingshot and a stone.”
The picture is of the legendary martyr child Fares Odeh.
BDS urges viewers to boycott new Marvel US/Israel propaganda film
True-blue film lovers most likely don’t waste their hard-earned cash on Marvel 'films' (if you can call them that), but, still, a warning about their latest offering is warranted.
The Boycott, Divestment and Sanction (BDS) campaign, a nonviolent Palestinian-led movement promoting boycotts, divestments, and economic sanctions against Israel, is calling on film-goers to give the latest piece of Marvel US empire/Zionist propaganda a miss.
The upcoming Captain America film, due out in February, features a character called Sabra, a mutant that serves the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, which has been persecuting and killing Palestinians for decades. Israeli actor Shira Haas plays the zionist propaganda character.
According to Middle Eastern Eye (MEE), in order to placate critics Marvel said the characters will not go by her alterego and will be called Ruth Bat-Seraph. The character is a former Black Widow and a high-ranking US government official close to the president – which sounds pretty dodgy anyway. But it makes no difference: the civilian name has been in use since the character's introduction in the early 1980s.
Sabra dons a blue and white costume with a Star of David cape clasp and is blatantly a personification of the state of Israel. It doesn’t get more propanda-ish than that, especially in times when Israel’s president Netanyahu and several ministers are subject to arrest for war crimes committed since the Gaza genocide began in October 2023.
Since 1948, Israel, backed by the US and other Western regimes, has been killing and displacing Palestinians from their homeland while continuously expanding its territory through land-grabbing, making a joke of so-called international law.
Still according to MEE, the name Sabra makes a reference to the Sabra and Shatila massacre of 1982, when up to 3,000 civilians - mostly Palestinians and Lebanese - were killed by an Israeli-backed right-wing Lebanese militia. Talk about adding insult to injury, which is something Israelis love doing, as TikTok videos of soldiers in underwear stolen from their Palestinian victims attest to.
Alia Malak of the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI), a founding member of the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions National Committee (BNC), said: “We echo the call of Palestinian film and arts organizations for boycotting Captain America: New World Order. Whatever superficial changes Marvel may make, the character’s anti-Palestinian racist history and representation of apartheid Israel cannot be sanitized. Disney halted its distribution and broadcasting in Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. Instead of taking similar steps against Israel’s decades-old occupation and colonization against Palestinians, Disney is deepening its complicity in apartheid. Israel’s government is the most far-right, racist, homophobic, sexist and fundamentalist in its history, with a senior minister describing himself as a ‘fascist homophobe.’ Marvel’s Israeli character is inherently associated with this apartheid government, including its influential fascist element.”
So, with so many good films on offer, like the Brazilian anti-fascistI’m Still Here that has snapped a best actress Golden Globe for Fernanda Torres, give Marvel genocidal propaganda the boot and stick to quality art cinema.

Wildlife find haven amid Brazil’s vanishing savanna
Conservation International is helping recover a savanna habitat nearly twice the size of Manhattan.
Brazil is home to a vast, but overlooked, tropical savanna called the Cerrado.
This sprawling patchwork of open grassland and scattered woodlands covers almost a quarter of the country — an area about the size of Greenland — providing habitat for 1,200 mammals, birds and reptiles and 6,000 plant species. Among its remarkable wildlife are giant anteaters, maned wolves, armadillos and brilliantly colored macaws.
But today, more than half of the original Cerrado has been cleared for cattle ranching and soy farming, making it one of the fastest disappearing ecosystems on Earth. And only a fraction of the remaining Cerrado is fully protected by the Brazilian government — around 3 percent.
In one corner of southwestern Brazil, a project designed by a sustainable timber operator, BTG Pactual Timberland Investment Group (TIG), and supported by Conservation International, is breathing new life into the savanna.
What was once a vast stretch of degraded pastureland just a year ago is being rapidly transformed into tree farms and 2,500 hectares (6,000 acres) of newly restored natural forest. While the project’s primary purpose is to store climate-warming carbon, it is also designed to protect biodiversity.

Cattle rancher leaves animals to die in Brazil
A heart-breaking scene. Fishermen came across cattle languishing on the banks of a river in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil as the rancher had abandoned them and they headed toward the water to look for food. Many of them died as they got stuck in the mud and were too weak to get back up. The rancher has been arrested and charged with animal cruelty. These appaling scenes of extreme suffering illustrate how animal exploiters treat living beings as things and discard them as trash when the going gets rough. Animal agriculture is a depravity.
