Made my green bean casserole from scratch this year. I added bacon, then I browned the mushrooms (yes I cooked them in bacon fat and butter until they got golden brown). Then I made a rue (using the fat that I cooked the mushrooms in) I added 3 tablespoons of flour and cooked that for 3-4 minutes. Once I cooked the raw flour taste out, I added a cup of chicken broth and stirred until smooth. Once the broth thickened, I added 1 cup heavy cream. Added salt and pepper to taste and added the green beans and half the fried onions and mixed together.
