Time Period ➜ Regency (approximately 1795 - 1837)
The label “Regency” for this period is based in the U.K. Due to King George III’s illness and difficulties at this time, he was inhibited from ruling consistently, therefore, his son George IV ruled as prince regent for a period of time during this era. This period is sometimes referred to the Napoleonic era. Napoleon overthrew the Directory in what is considered to be the final stage of the French Revolution (first stage starting in 1789). During this era France went to war with Europe and Russia. Fashion changed dramatically going into this period as a direct result of socio-political changes. Quite simply, post-French Revolution fashions distanced themselves from the high maintenance styles (or overtly aristocratic styles) of the Rococo/Georgian styles (high powdered wigs, wide paniers, etc.) to more simple styles and lines.
