the GA talking about conformitygate is funny to me because to them itâs all about âoh the props changed colorsâ but to us itâs âmike wheeler is a gay man doomed for eternity and this is not a fate he deservesâ
as someone with an actual degree in film and television, someone who has spent years studying how images communicate desire, conflict, longing, and emotional truth, i will stand by this forever: the cinematography was pointing toward byler with the subtlety of a neon sign having a full body meltdown.
the visual language wasnât hinting. it wasnât nudging. it wasnât âopen to interpretation.â it was deliberate. the framing, the blocking, the colour palettes, the eyelines, the negative space, the way the camera kept gravitating toward them, that is not coincidence. that is not fan projection. that is the story speaking in the language of cinema, even when the dialogue refused to.
and hereâs the part that keeps me up at night: it could have been one of the most beautiful queer stories ever put to screen. the emotional architecture was there. the groundwork was there. the cinematography was practically begging the narrative to follow through. it could have been tender, devastating, transformative, a queer coming of age arc told with visual precision and genuine heart. and instead, it was let down. not by the craft, but by the refusal to honour what the craft was clearly building.
and let me be extremely clear: if there is no extra content, if this is genuinely all we get, i will be forever furious that byler was handled the way it was. because once youâve been trained to read images the way you are trained to read them, you canât unsee it. you canât pretend the camera didnât tell the truth. you canât pretend the emotional centre wasnât right there, glowing.
so no, I will not be shutting up about it. not when the cinematography screamed louder than the script. not when the potential for a groundbreaking queer narrative was right there, framed beautifully, lit intentionally, and then left to rot in subtext. if the visuals are going to declare byler with that much conviction, the least I can do is answer back.
btw lucas being the first out of the party to say will won't lose him and his face didn't change at all when will said he doesn't like girls. still s tier friend no notes lucas sinclair you will always be famous.
I need this to be the timeline where the duffer are actually meta geniuses and not dumb fucks who made a depressing ass nonsensical ending to a well loved show
I'm giving them til the end of January to release the REAL ending, I just can't fathom such a shitty ending
Also how the hell did every other ship BESIDES byler, we didn't even get PLATONIC BYLER!!!!!!!!
oh and donât forget what the highest rated episode of the whole season was
Yes!
It was the gay empowerment/abused boy overpowers his abuser episode, and people loved it.
Meanwhile the Duffers' idea of "gay representation" was a liberal guy's watered-down idea of what an appropriate "coming out" portrayal should be, trying to kowtow to the conservative crowd... and people on both sides hated it.
This is the folly of sanding off the rough edges and sanitizing our experience and not showing who the real, courageous we are.
People don't end up "accepting" queer people because we plead that we're "just like them"; it's when we FIGHT and others recognize the struggles in their own lives and are inspired by us. That's why Sorcerer was so inspiring to people: it linked to Will's coming out to finding POWER.
As far as I'm concerned, Will's coming-out arc ended in Episode 4. THAT was a far better conclusion than what we got.

rip byler lawyer
rip byler lawyer, you were our guardian and light in the darkđđ
the duffers didnât deserve how much thought and compassion you (and all the other amazing analysts and creators) put into the show and this fandom, and Iâm so so SO glad your extensive work will be a permanent record of the existence of the byler fandom and the fucking heinous, and frankly mean, queerbaiting we went through.
now that itâs been confirmed that âbylerâs really were just delusional losers all alongâ (đđ) itâs so valuable and important to have all of the time before it captured. The fandom is GOING to change drastically now. This is the before/after moment, and itâs so valuable to have this wonderful, hopeful, analytical and contextualising series of videos from an Actual Lawyer for others to look back on and say âoh you guys really werenât crazyâ.
so to Ronald off the record, I want to say that I appreciate you and your videos, and they meant a lot to me and so many other queer young people. I will continue to follow and love your content, and Iâm sorry that you put so much more thought and love into this show and these characters than the d*ffers ever did.
The concept of creating an ending so disappointing that a community comes together and decides to collectively engage in a shared delusion of a secret "real" ending is baffling
A saw a post that allegedly said that the real ending would drop on 1/11/25 and while I want this and the whole idea of conformity gate to be I sadly don't think it will be
And it's so upsetting because the evidence for conformity gate is so good but it's an unintentional by product of a bad ending
Can anyone help me find this steve fanfic where the reader is trapped by vecna but thinks their actually his wife and goes by Mrs Whatsit but then starts to gain some of her memories of her real life
Edit: I found the fanic and all is right in the world again!!!!! Thank you @lizpottersworld !!!!!
Whatever happens tomorrow, DO NOT FEEL STUPID!
People are going to try to make you feel like you were stupid/greedy/annoying for wanting Byler to be canon if it doesn't happen. DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM!
Remember that the foundation of our arguments is made up of things that the Duffers CHOSE to do.
They CHOSE to make Will in love with Mike.
They CHOSE to give Mike and Will a uniquely close friendship compared to the other members of the party.
They CHOSE to make El's story one of independence.
They CHOSE to show us that El is at her happiest when she is away from the men in her life.
They CHOSE to draw parallels between Mike and Dr Brenner in season 4.
They CHOSE to have Mike and El fight in both seasons 3 and 4.
They CHOSE to separate their "main couple" for 3 out of the 5 seasons of the show.
They CHOSE to have Mike need to be needed, and they CHOSE to make Will uniquely able to make Mike feel valued.
They CHOSE to use Will's feelings, disguised as El's, to make Mike feel more secure.
They CHOSE to write Mike's monologue to El so that it is full of inconsistencies and lies that are easy to pick up on.
They CHOSE to have Mike and El act platonic around each other in season 5.
They CHOSE not to have Mike and El kiss since SEASON 4 EPISODE 2.
They CHOSE to drastically change Mike's character between seasons 2 and 3, and they CHOSE not to have him revert back to his old self until AFTER Will gives his 'you're the heart' speech.
They CHOSE to introduce the 'snowball into an avalanche' analogy and have Will ask 'how obvious' with regards to Mike being interested in him.
They CHOSE to make us root for Will by making him suffer EVERY SEASON.
They CHOSE to market the show as 'for the outcasts'
They CHOSE to explicitly tell us that forced conformity is the real monster.
They CHOSE not to shut down theories about Byler, despite doing the same with other fan theories.
I could go on, but the point is that we're not stretching when we theorize about Byler. It isn't just noticing obscure details or believing in "made up" theories like the blue-yellow color theory. The foundation of Byler is woven into the most fundamental aspects of the story.
Mike, Will, and El's stories, as they have been presented, tell us that El does not need to be in a relationship, and that Will wants to love someone and be loved, and that the person who makes Will happiest is Mike and vice versa. Recognizing those facts and extrapolating them to predict where the characters will end up is NOT STUPID.
Assuming that the shift in Mike's character was intentional, rather than poor writing, and drawing the conclusion that he could be dealing with internalized homophobia on a show that is marketed as 'for the outcasts' is NOT STUPID. It's simply us attempting to understand a character and taking the showrunners at their word.
Wanting Will to end up with the boy he loves is NOT STUPID. He's the protagonist, as we've been repeatedly told. We SHOULD be rooting for him to get what he wants and to be happy!
What the Duffers did NOT CHOOSE was for their show to blow up like it did and for their fan base to be flooded with bigots and rampant homophobia. Choosing to believe that the end of their story will make us, the outcasts, happy and NOT the general audience is NOT STUPID OR GREEDY. It's holding the Duffers to what they promised us.
All we've done is notice patterns and use them to predict the outcome of the show. We have done NOTHING wrong. We are not delusional and we are not stupid. Don't let anyone try to convince you otherwise.
This while thing just feels like the biggest gaslighting mission ever, it was even subtext anymore it was just text
Sometimes ships are just random and silly but byler had SO much evidence backing up its existence only for them to pull this Mileven shit at the last minute
And I wouldn't be disappointed about if they set up the evidence for this ship to be endgame, BUT THEY DIDN'T đđđ
So much set up for Mike's possibly coming out only for it to never pay off
I sleeping know that in a few hours there will be a plethora of son's coach/daughter's sex ed teacher Steve Harrington fanfics and I think that's magical â¨ď¸
