One thing I’ve learned: when people end whatever they’re saying with “idk, I’m probably not making any sense,” it usually means they are telling you something very close and personal to them, something that’s such an integral part of their being that they have trouble putting it into words that do it justice.

In defense of Emma...

I hate lying…and I am not a fan (at all) of keeping secrets from your family. Still, in this particular scenario…I feel like her behavior is understandable.

Emma was just basically given the fairy-tale equivalent of a terminal diagnosis. She was told she’s going to die. There’s no “cure.” There’s not some quick, magical fix. Emma is a young mother…who recently fell in love…So let that sink in for a moment. This is a young woman, with her entire life ahead of her….who is now coping with the knowledge her time is almost up. How is ANYONE supposed to deal with that??

People react differently to a these types of things…but denial and avoidance are fairly common at first. Telling people about a diagnosis means that it’s “real.” It changes the dynamic of the relationship. While ideally, she should tell her partner…. it’s completely possible she just wants a little more “normal” time with him. Perhaps she wants to enjoy a few more couch sessions with him as “just Emma”…and not “slated for death Emma.” She may also feel that she is ‘protecting’ Hook, rather than worrying him. Regardless of the reason-there isn’t an intent to harm.

I know we all love Hook. I know we all want their relationship to be perfect, and lovely, and open… but I think it’s important to remember to not be overly harsh on Emma… and to try to apply a bit of ‘real world logic’ when evaluating her reactions.

(edit: I think it’s also worth it to point out her similarity here to her own father. As you recall in Neverland, Charming was scratched by poison and thought he was dying. He didn’t tell anyone, with the hope of fixing it on his own/not worrying anyone. So…Emma’s behavior is certainly keeping with her family’s ‘norm.’)

I was thrilled to pieces when I saw this scene. Disney could have written Gideon off like some bully character who never really amounted to anything, or got what was coming to him like a lot of those characters do in their movies. Gideon made something of himself. He’s a pastry chef, something that’s not traditionally a job for men in media. And as soon as Judy speaks to him, he immediately apologizes to her. He doesn’t try to shrug it off as no big deal, or say that it was just boys being boys or whatever; he knows he hurt her, and he owns up to it. And Judy immediately forgives him.

Well done, Disney.

Also the language that he used is not something that he would have most likely grown up hearing/using. Describing his failings as self-doubt that manifested into “unchecked rage and aggression” sounds SO MUCH like therapy speak. So he’s either gotten counseling to help him with some of his problems, or sought out literature to help himself. A++ disney :)

Bohemian Rhapsody is no one’s favorite song, but also everyone’s favorite song. Like, when someone asks what your favorite song is you never say Bohemian Rhapsody but when it starts playing on the radio I am pretty sure you crank it up and belt out every single lyric and you don’t even care you’re so proud.
