How Dare The Robins Sing
Have you read How Dare The Robins Sing?
Yes, previously
Yes, now that you've recced it to me
No
Authour: @count-dyscalculia (CountDyscalculia)
Subfandom: Batman
Media: Comics
Relationships: Gen (Tim Drake & Bruce Wayne, Tim Drake & Dick Grayson, Minor/Background Ships)
Year: 2022
Rating: Gen
Warnings: Implied/Referenced Death
Summary:
“Jesus Christ, kid.” Dick is looking back at the studio. Like his mind is anywhere else. “This doesn’t have a single thing to do with you. Or me.” Rage, well contained, quiet as a wound. It grates against me like flint. I can feel the argument reignite in me. “He’s landed six people in the ER.” --- Tim knows he's not smart enough, or fast enough, or strong enough to come anywhere close to the legacy Jason Todd deserves, but Batman needs a Robin. Now he just needs to get Batman on board with that plan.

Submitter's comment:
Full disclosure- this one was written by my spouse <3 This fic is incredible! Absolutely gut wrenching portrayal of Tim's relationship with his parents, balanced out with some great relationships with Dick, Bruce, Alfred, the titans, and Tim's civie friends. Amazing twists and turns and beautiful writing! It's so well thought through and nuanced, and holds a really good balance between hurt/comfort and fun
Superman animation yayy 🌟👍 really loved the movie
The Stephanie Brown Wars
It has come to my attention that not enough people know everything DC put Stephanie Brown and her fans through in the 2000s and 2010s, so here, as threatened, is the Saga. There have definitely been female characters who have been put through more horrific storylines, but what I think is really remarkable about Steph's story is how clearly it highlights the misogyny against real women, i.e. readers, that was completely mask-off in the comics industry at the time.
Please note that I am only going to be focusing on Steph's death in War Games, her erasure from continuity with the New 52, and the fallout from both of those events. If I dug into the sexist treatment she got from Batman and Tim prior to her tenure as Robin, we'd be here all day.
ANYWAY. It begins in 2004. In Robin #125, Tim's dad discovers that he is Robin, and threatens to out Batman unless his underage son quits this highly dangerous and illegal activity (fair).
In Robin #126, Steph sees Tim being kissed by his ex-girlfriend, Darla Aquista. Now in Tim's defense, Darla initiated the kiss and Tim tells her afterwards that he's seeing someone. On the other hand, the kiss lasts for four whole panels and five lines of dialogue from observers. Also, considering Tim originally ended his relationship with Darla by cheating on her with Steph, you can see why Steph might not be feeling super trusting here. [EDIT: Darla was not Tim's ex, I was thinking about Ariana Dzerchenko there. Tim being chronically unfaithful still holds but that's for another post.]
Upset, Steph makes herself a costume, breaks into the Batcave, and declares herself the new Robin:
Bruce is like "...You know what, yeah, okay." Alfred pulls him aside and immediately calls out what's going on here:
Bruce very pointedly does not answer Alfred's question, which is as good as a yes. And look: you can question Steph's decision to volunteer as Robin out of spite because she assumed her boyfriend was cheating on her without talking to him. And you can question her later actions that kick off War Games. But she's sixteen years old. Meanwhile Bruce, a grown-ass man who is also Batman, is playing mind games with a couple of high schoolers in order to...what? Destroy Tim's relationship with his only living parent and totally discard Steph when she's no longer useful, presumably.
Also please note Bruce accurately describing Steph's best qualities, which are also her fatal flaw. And remember that the quality he claims he's hiring for is also what he'll blame her firing on.
If you'd like to know more about creators who stuck Steph's case into books during that time, I have a breakdown here: https://shadowedplaces.net/robins/projectgirlwonder.html
Reblogging to share this resource! And also to shout out @sharpestrose as the founder of Project Girl Wonder and the campaign to get Steph a memorial case (plus Girl-Wonder.org as a whole).

peep another addition in my series of being obsessed with LPW’s spot conlon…. she changed the game
'I hope this fic isn't abandoned!' it's not, I just have brain worms, sorry
katie was counting on brennen lee mulligan’s rage being what got her pitch views, but she was clearly not considering the sheer potential that rested within aabria iyengar’s unprecedented ability to run a one-woman guerilla marketing campaign
Temporarily breaking kayfabe here just to say that I hope the lesson here is that whimsy is *way* more powerful than people give it credit for. It’s been genuinely so much fun watching people get in on the bit.
This isn’t about the win (because who knows if Tumblr even counts?! That was never the point!) and just about sharing the foundational conceit of Game Changer: once you figure out the game, how hard can you play it? And for a couple incredibly silly days, we all get to play together. 💙
Anyway, stan #Blarmy and I’ll see you in the cars!
Congratulations to all AO3 users! Important Milestone reached!

An Incomplete List of US LGBTQ+ Helplines
I just saw the news that the Trump administration is ending funding for The Trevor Project as a 988 Lifeline partner.
First and foremost, the Trevor Project is not shutting down. They can be reached directly at 1-866-488-7386, or by texting START to 678-678. What is shutting down is the ability to call 988 and be directed to the Trevor Project’s LGBTQ+ youth lifeline.
However, I wanted to share the various LGBTQ+ helplines that I have bookmarked anyway, because god forbid one of these incredibly vital organizations DOES shut down, I want y’all to know what other support is out there.
Please feel free to add additional helplines in reblogs if I’ve missed anything!

Just finished the last murderbot audiobook (cannot recommend enough) so I can finally look it up on tumblr without worrying about spoilers! It’s so jarring to learn how all these names are spelled!
What do you mean it’s not Amina, Keidi, Marrow, T’Pon, and Teeago? Where’s Mickey???
2 updates in one week :D!

Very on brand for me to not update a fic for almost a year and then update twice back to back!
The only acceptable trans Tim headcanon would be Tim introducing himself to the batfam as a boy from the get-go with such confidence that no one questions him. Then, his first solo case as Robin is investigating the disappearance of Jack and Janet Drake's "daughter," so he pretends to have a twin sister by forging a bunch of documents and photoshopping family pictures. He then fabricates evidence of her death, committing multiple crimes in the process, and holds a fake funeral at the end. Because if his previous name is dead to him, he's gonna kill it the Tim Drake way
This. This is the Tim Drake Way.
Just saw an ad for fucking Kellog's cornflakes wherein a shirtless blindfolded man tied to a bed is like "Wait.. are you... eating??" and it pans across the bed to reveal that his partner is, indeed, too distracted to have sex with him bc she is chowing down on corn flakes. Now I've been caught up in wondering whether:
a) John Harvey Kellog would despise this ad; the mere proximity of bondage-play to his brand name and beloved anti-porn flakes is unforgivable
b) John Harvey Kellog would enjoy this ad, because it shows a young woman forsaking the temptations of the flesh in favour of eating a wholesome and nourishing bowl of cornflakes
Cast your vote
A - that crunchy old man is rolling in his grave
B - it's literally demonstrating the flakes' intended purpose
C - what in the goddamn hell are you people talking about
"Are you sure you want to post this without tags?" What, pray tell, tumblr, would I add to this post to help it reach its 'intended audience.' #cornflakes #bondage
When I was 19 or 20, I sewed myself a wool dress for medieval re-enactments. I hated it almost as soon as I put it on. The bodice was cut wrong; the lacing was uneven; the colour was garish; the front closure was historically inaccurate; the embellishments were sewn on with terrible thread. Wearing it, I was constantly aware of its myriad flaws.
Then in my twenties I hit my adult metabolism and didn’t fit into any of my old clothes anymore. I gave my old dresses to my foster mother, who sells costumes for a living, and the green dress sold. It entered the local medieval re-enactment secondhand economy.
Every time I go to an event, someone different is wearing my green dress. It draws my eyes because it’s a lovely colour and the fabric—real wool and enough of it—moves beautifully with the wearer’s body. I never recognize it at first, because every wearer has worn it a different way; it can be mixed and matched, dressed up and down, moved around a good century of history. From ten feet away its lacing looks elegant, its embellishments beautiful gracenotes. I think: Oh my god, that dress looks beautiful. Wait a minute, that’s MY DRESS.
That dress teaches me, every time I see it, to stop looking at myself through such critical eyes. That dress doesn’t just look good, it looks better than most other dresses in its category, because I put in the time and the effort (including using pliers to force a needle through six layers of wool) to make sure it was done right.
It’s my reminder that sometimes the things I do are actually good, and if I indulge my natural tendency to criticize myself in everything, I’ll end up missing when I’m actually awesome.
Happy tears. Good lesson!
This.
I don’t know about others but the only reason I put both is so that whichever someone clicks on, they will find my fic. So if there is supposed to be rules, I guarantee you that no writer knows these ones. We can barely get people to comment, you think we’re going to specifically choose & or / ? Hell no.
I’ve been in fandom for twenty years, and “/” means romance and “&” means no romance was literally one of the first things I learned. It dates back to Star Trek fanfiction of the 70s. I’m boggled by the fact that anyone who’s been reading fic on AO3 for more than like five minutes wouldn’t know that, and I’m curious as to what fanfic community you come out of.
I don’t think that tagging with both is actually going to get your fic in front of more readers. People looking for romance often exclude the “&” tag if there are too many gen fics tagged with both. People looking for gen often exclude the “/” tag if there are too many fics with both. So rather than putting your fic in front of twice the people, you are in fact more likely to get your target audience ignoring your fic because it has a tag they don’t want.
Also, by overtagging you are more likely to annoy potential readers away from your fic than entice them. A fic tagged both & and / better have both romance and a ton of platonic interaction between the two characters, like a slow burn romance friends-to-lovers arc. If it isn’t, I’m going to be very unhappy because the author lied to me with the tags to try and trick me into reading a fic with deceptive advertising.
When I’m in a fandom and see tagging where some of the tags don’t really apply and are just there to get it in front of more eyes, I’m going to assume one of two things. Either the author is a newb who doesn’t know anything, or the author is purposefully spamming the tags because they don’t care about lying to their potential audience and think that “spray and pray” is an effective tactic. In the first case, their writing probably will not be very good, so why bother reading their fic. In the second case, the fact that I can’t trust the tags to be accurate means I’m not going to read it to see if it’s interesting even if it has a tag I like. Chances are, that tag isn’t actually in the fic anyway, and even if it is, by spam-tagging the author is making the archive harder to use for everybody. Why would I reward bad behavior with attention? No. Far better to mute the author and move on.
More to the point--and no, I will never stop harping on this, because we have GOT to stop leaving our strongest points in the drawer--it doesn't matter if you heard of this convention before joining AO3 or not, because it's in AO3's tagging FAQ.
[id: the "How do I tag a romantic or platonic relationship?" section of the tagging FAQ here.]
"But Jo," you may argue, because you're wrong. "There's no way to find that without digging through site FAQ menus, and that's really inaccessible!"
sure
except
that when you go to post a new fic, and you go to put in those relationship tags, you see this
[id: the Relationships field]
and that tooltip, the one THERE TO EXPLAIN HOW THE FIELD WORKS, links to the Relationships segment of the tag FAQ, which explicitly lays this shit out.
I don't care if you don't know fandom history. I don't care if you've never heard a goddamn word about the spirk shippers. I don't care if you've never been exposed to fandom culture in your life. It is, frankly, not fair to expect those things of everyone.
What is entirely fair to expect is that you will READ THE INSTRUCTIONS PRINTED NEXT TO THE FUCKING BOX, actually. Forget fandom conventions. It genuinely doesn't matter whether you agree with or respect fandom conventions. This is a site policy. This is explicitly how tagging on AO3, specifically, works.
With the new mute feature, I'm more likely to mute a user that uses both "/" and "&" like they're interchangeable or the same thing.
I will say it took me wayyyyyy longer as a fanfic reader to understand the / or & difference. I knew the difference by the time I started posting, but if I hadn’t I don’t think I would have thought to click the tooltips. I genuinely just assumed it was stylistic preference.
So in the interest of helping navigate ao3, the most helpful tip I ever got was that when you italicize something, make sure you italicize the punctuation too! If you don’t, you end up with a space between the last word and the punctuation like this .
