Presentations look across the American Memory collections to investigate curricular themes. They include historical background, helping to tell the story behind the theme. Activities offer an interactive, "hands on" experience and focus on a specific topic, rather than broad themes. They require teacher direction, but invite students to participate.

Democrats across the District turned away from incumbent Mayor Vincent C. Gray on Tuesday, picking Muriel Bowser as their November candidate. With a lackluster turnout, Bowser won with fewer votes than a losing candidate got four years ago. But Gray’s supporters abandoned him on an even larger scale. In Gray’s east-side strongholds alone, his vote totals dropped by almost 28,000.

This site is great for science teachers looking for real world examples of the scientific process. Each case study has teacher notes, which include ideas on how to present the info (debates, online research, role playing, etc.), and readings with comprehension questions. You can search the case studies by education level and topic.Â
It's pretty great.

This is a great interactive computer resource sit for virtually any subject. From recreating maps to learning division with drag and drop, this site is a gold mine of activities. The games work really well and although they are designed for kids, they'd work well with our learners as well. Highly recommended.Â

We just got a major shipment of GED 2014 prep books in! They've been sorted by subject and are featured on our bookshelves in the Ward 5 Library (located by the faculty mailboxes). Ward 8 will have new materials by the end of the week!

Writing Instructors,
Please invite your learners who are mothers to share their story!  World Education is again holding their Mother's Day writing contest this year.  All submissions must be received by Friday, March 7th, 2014. Â
Learners should email the material to: [email protected] and include their name, address, email, phone number, and contact information for AoH.  An AoH staff member can help them to submit their work.  World Education will require a digital photo of the writer (with or without their children) for all published writings.  Â
Writing prompts: • Write about yourself: Where did you grow up? How old are you? What was your education experience before enrolling in adult education classes? • Write about your children. How have they responded to your going back to school? • What are your hopes and dreams that caused you to go back to school? What are the steps you are taking to make them come true? Where are you studying and what? • What sacrifices have you had to make in order to make education a priority? • What do you enjoy about going back to school? Have you already experienced good outcomes from going back to school? • What else would you like others to know about you as a mother getting her education? Suggested length is 300-500 words. Published stories will be edited in consultation with the writer. 10-12 stories will be published online by World Education. A $50 stipend will be paid to each adult education student whose work is accepted for publication.  All writings will be considered. The selection will be made by World Education in early April.  -Audrey

Street Law is a great resource for social studies class! Tons of lesson plans, activities, and background information on the Constitution, US Government, and the courts system.Â
Beyond the general site (linked above), the best resource I've ever used for social studies is here, at the Street Law landmark cases site. Brittany and Jayme mentioned this at our January training because there are tons of complete lesson plans for many landmark Supreme Court cases. Great activities and level-able!Â

ADDitude Website
Kim Ross shared a few articles with me from ADDitude Magazine today.   I checked out the teacher resource section of their website.  While it seems geared towards teaching children with ADHD and learning disabilities, many of the tips that I read would be useful for our learners. Â
Let me know if you would like me to email you a scan of the articles that she found particularly useful, as I didn't find them online. Â One has tips for teachers to help students hear commands. Â The other is for students, and has study techniques. Â Thank you, Kim!
