This chapterâs song is âGorgeousâ by Taylor Swift
What was Virgil supposed to do? Far too many times had he come too close to embarrassing himself in front of Roman. He was fairly sure that he had been caught staring once or twice, and his quick looks away coupled with an undeniable blush couldnât have helped his case either. He was just hoping that Roman was just self-centered enough to not find someone admiring him out of the ordinary.Â
Just to be safe, Virgil had been avoiding him at all costs. You canât say something stupid if you donât say anything at all, or at least that was the philosophy he was hoping to find refuge in. It wasnât difficult, and maybe not even noticeable, as itâs not like he had ever been that sociable. Spending most of his time in his room playing video games wasnât particularly out of character, to say the least. However, it was taking a toll on him. Virgil had, obviously, grown to enjoy time with the Prince as well as time outside of his room, even if only a little. Being reclusive mightâve been a habit for him, but it wasnât particularly fun.Â
He couldnât even avoid Roman completely either. There were the times they were summoned to discuss issues in Thomasâ life as a group. Those ones werenât too bad. He could easily focus on the issue and just not glance to his right all that often. No, it was any other situation that Virgil found himself in trouble. Such was the case for the weekly âfamily dinnerâ Patton made them all attend. Weekly was a compromise, as he had originally bargained for daily, but Logan, Roman, and Virgil all agreed that was too much.Â
Virgil pushed around spaghetti (Pattonâs specialty) on his plate, only partially listening to whatever conversation was transpiring. Last he checked, Logan was going on about a book he had read, giving a full synopsis and review. Virgil, and he assumed Roman and Patton as well, was feigning mild interest.Â
âIâll stop there, lest I risk boring you all,â Logan finished. He finally turned his attention to his food that he hadnât had the time to touch.Â
âI think you overshot that boundary by a mile, but sure,â Roman commented. He smirked towards Virgil, correctly assuming that Patton wouldnât be as receptive to his snark. The other smiled back but held in a laugh.Â
Patton shot a stern look towards the Prince, and both he and Virgil composed themselves to avoid a lecture on the importance of being kind. Logan had already brushed off the comment, it wasnât the first of its kind and it wouldnât be the last.Â
âWell anyways, I have been thinking of a new story,â Roman shared. He had many fantasies in his head that would never see the light of day; however, he could find use for them as dinner entertainment.Â
âOh, that's exciting Roman!â Patton loved to listen to whatever plot the Prince felt like sharing whenever they hung out, and he was by far the most receptive to fairytales.Â
âHmm, I doubt it is more exciting than my contribution but go on, I suppose,â Logan added with clear saltiness. This time he was the receiver of Pattonâs glare.Â
Virgil kept most of his focus on his food, but he did look up just long enough to signal that he was listening. Nevertheless, Roman seemed disgruntled that he hadnât commented on the thrilling chance to witness another great creation. âThis one has vampires in it. Virgil, I suggest you pay attention,â Roman attempted.
âAlright Princy,â Virgil finally stopped borderline playing with his food and looked up at the other, âWow me.â Roman, now emboldened, began spinning his fantastical tale. Virgil couldnât say he wasnât entertained. Even when the creativeâs stories were too childlike to enthrall Anxiety, he still enjoyed seeing the passion displayed by the other. He was also flattered, despite his best judgement, that Roman had not only ensured that this creation would appeal to Virgil, but he had also seemed to care whether or not he had Virgil's attention. He added that to the list of things that would keep him up that night.Â
âI am surprised that the vampire survived in the end, usually you end by slaying all of the villains and beasts,â Logan commented.Â
âWell, I liked the vampire so killing him seemed a little cruel,â Roman looked over at Virgil for a second. Was he the vampire? Did Roman like him? Whoâs keeping track of the list of things that would keep him up that night?Â
âI am glad to see a happy ending,â Patton added. Roman had never shared a story over dinner that didnât have a wholesome conclusion, but supposedly Patton was still relieved. âItâs nice to see the vampire being close with the hero. Great story Roman.â
âThank you, thank you. All in a dayâs work.âÂ
âSpeaking of work,â Logan cut in, receiving a groan from Roman and a subsequent chuckle from Virgil, âWe need to start on Thomasâ next video.âÂ
âWe just finished the last one,â Virgil pointed out. He was hoping to move on from this topic in order to avoid hearing bickering for the rest of dinner.Â
âI was just about to say that,â Roman added. He gestured to Virgil as if he was showing Logan a piece of evidence.Â
Logan countered, âI am aware. However, starting early will help alleviate the struggles we had with the last one. Maybe starting now could prevent creative block down the line.â
As Roman prepared to argue back, which would have undoubtedly kickstarted an hour-long argument, Virgil cut in, âAlright enough. Argue about this later when I donât have to deal with it.â He knew that Logan was right, but he didnât feel like watching both sides get more mad until everything was reduced to name calling and personal attacks.Â
âWell I guess if you donât want to âdeal withâ Thomasâ career and livelihood, we can discuss this later. However, other than that topic, I have nothing else to discuss with you all.â Logan then left the table to put his plate in the sink before going back to his own room.Â
âI hope heâs not too mad,â Patton all but whispered.Â
Roman sighed, âHe didnât even wash his plate, clear sign of Logan being enraged.â A moment of silence passed before he mumbled, âItâs not my fault he has a stick up his ass.â Patton pretended he didnât hear that part.Â
âYou know, heâs not wrong,â Virgil tentatively said. He did feel bad for dismissing Logan but still didnât want to participate in a huge, heated discussion.Â
Roman looked up, betrayed. âI thought you were on my side!âÂ
Virgil leaned back in his chair. âItâs not that youâre wrong either. We did just make a video, we donât need to start right awayâŠbut, starting early would make for a smoother process.âÂ
Patton took the remaining plates to the sink. âJustâŠI donât know, try to be understanding, Roman.â Â
âHow am I getting lectured? Heâs the one that ran off, like a kid!â
âNo one is attacking you, calm down,â Virgil responded. âLetâs just give this up like I suggested five minutes ago.âÂ
Roman crossed his arms, âFine.â Virgil scanned his face to try to gauge how upset Roman was, particularly at himself. He couldnât settle on a conclusion.
Patton finished up and bid the other two goodnight, leaving just Virgil and Roman alone. This situation was one that Virgil had successfully avoided for a month and a half. In order to not break his streak, he got up to follow Patton.
Before he could fully get out of his chair, Roman contested, âCould you stay?â
âOh, umâŠalright.â Shit.Â
âWe could watch a movie or somethingâŠâ Romanâs sentence trailed off towards the end.
âYeah.â Virgil didnât know what to do in this situation. What did Roman want at this moment? Comfort or a distraction? He wasnât sure he wanted to be either. Further, he was worried, now more than ever, that he would say something stupid and blow his whole cover.Â
Roman got up and moved to the couch, and the other followed. He scrolled through Disney+ as an awkward silence settled around them. He chose "Emperorâs New Grooveâ and watched as the title screen played. âWe havenât hung out in a while.â
âNo, I guess not,â Virgil didnât have to guess.Â
âWhy?â Roman was still looking at the screen.Â

logan: president/sg of the team. very experienced and is a strict chair, especially regarding parliamentary procedure.
roman: only interested in being a delegate, since he enjoys the aspect of playing a character. only really joined because his parents made him in order to diversify his cv. would win more awards if he cared about position papers.
janus: great delegate. loves to form and lead a coalition against whatever major powers are involved in the topic (unless he is a major power of course, then he abuses that power). very good at getting people to be signatories on his resolutions. he's also good at chairing, but a harsh grader. loves security council.
patton: in the club because his friends are in it. generally sticks to general assembly. not usually best delegate but sometimes wins an honorable mention because he likes to help out the new delegates. he also helps with their school's annual conference.
virgil: never wants to be a delegate or chair. the one time he was a delegate, he didn't speak at all. not even during unmoderated caucuses. he is a page or volunteer most of the time. he helps a lot with planning the school's conference. he particularly likes folding placards, as it's an easy and monotonous task. also only really joined to add to his cv.
remus: the kind of delegate who threatens to bomb everyone (even when his country does not have that capability). one time he even threatened it in a un women committee. just goes to have fun mainly. logan won't let him chair in the conference, but he does make for a good crisis coordinator.

This chapterâs song is âGold Rushâ by Taylor Swift
Virgil had a problem. The problem was that whenever he was around the Prince he would find himself in a red flush. He had many reasons why this was a horrible turn of events. Firstly, he had just gotten out of what had devolved into a terrible relationship, and throwing himself into another whirlwind would be ill-advised, right? Secondly, there was no way that this could ever be. For one, Virgil was definitely not up for doing anything about this crush he had caught, akin to an illness in his mind; and even if he did, Roman would never go for him.
Roman was the Prince, a lover of romance, a regal and beautiful entity that Virgil couldnât allow himself to even hope for. Anytime he caught his mind wandering to âwhat ifâs and âmaybeâs, heâd stop dead in his tracks. The final reason why this crush was detrimental was of course because it would prove Deceit right, and Virgil couldnât have that.
So he resolved to silently suffocate these feelings and move on in life. However, one can only control their own mind so much, and Virgil couldnât control how watching Roman stumble over his words while complimenting his new outfit made him feel. He couldnât suffocate the butterflies he felt when Roman invited him to watch a movie together, or even just offered a smile from time to time. While their ever growing friendship was a good thing, all things considered, it did make Virgil feel like pulling out his hair in frustration.
He was, at the very least, glad that Roman was generally oblivious. Too often was he caught up in his own thoughts, ideas, and creations to notice how his side had brushed Virgilâs while on his way to his room. So he certainly didnât notice the way Virgil picked up his pace to be in the refuge of solitude as soon as possible.
This cacophony of emotions was still in the back of his mind while eating breakfast one morning, a habit he had only gotten into after leaving the others. Oatmeal was far more enjoyable when Remus wasnât fucking with it. Logan and Patton had both encouraged him to build better routines. Like a stubborn child, Virgil wouldnât admit that regular meals and semi-regular sleep (still working on that one) made him feel generally better throughout the day, but he also maintained the changes.
Thomas had a deadline, created by Logan, coming up, and it did not seem like he was gonna make it. While missing the date did make Virgil uneasy, he truly didnât care enough to jumpstart Thomasâ productivity himself.
âI am only saying that some more urgency would be appreciated,â Logan continued whatever he had been saying, Virgil admittedly hadnât been listening.
âI just donât think we need to make Virgil and Thomas worried about this, whatâs the harm in missing the deadline anyways?â Patton must have been keeping engaged in the conversation, even while taking time to sort out and only eat the marshmallows from his cereal.
âWhatâs the harm? The trust of the subscribers, the flow of the content in general, the foundation of our whole creating system, all are made vulnerable by ignoring deadlines.â Logan had given this speech many times, by now it was delivered in a monotonous tone.
âAlright sure, but I canât do much if Princy doesnât get off his ass,â Virgil finally reentered the conversation. His new found feelings were not enough to prevent him from throwing Roman under the bus.
âWell I would go check on his progress; however,â Logan paused to organise his words,âRoman does not usually respond well when I enter his âcreative spaceâ.â Logan was conveniently not mentioning his condescension that he usually brought into the space as well. Virgil did his best to stay out of most arguments between Logan and Roman. Anyone could see that they had mostly moved beyond their intertwined past, but whenever a discussion about content mutated into name-calling and blaming, the cracks were visible. It didnât feel like Virgil's place to be, and Patton seemed to be on that same page.
âWell I can go up and check on him?â Patton offered.
âNo, you two will just chat for the whole afternoon. Besides, you wonât be firm enough with him. Virgil should go.â
Virgil sighed. âIâm starting to think you guys only got me down here eating breakfast to trick me into doing more work.â He wasnât even finished with his oatmeal.
Logan responded,âOf course not, that wouldnât be a good plan even-â
âItâs alright Logan, Iâll do it. Donât know how successful Iâll be though.â Logan hummed in response. Virgil dealt with the rest of his oatmeal then made his way to Romanâs room. He had been there a few times since becoming a part of the group. Once for a movie night, once Roman had asked for help with sewing; just intermediate instances here and there. He enjoyed being in the fantastical room. Something about the Princeâs energy felt as though it took a weight off of Virgil. He also found that his mind tended to wander more while in the space, but rather than anxious webs of thought, usually he found himself imagining trivial, non-worrying scenarios. It might be due to their opposing dynamic, bravery versus fear. Roman definitely became less confident after time in the otherâs room, so the opposite was only natural, Virgil theorized.
His knock on the door was met with an exasperated âWho is it?â Once Virgil had identified himself, Roman softened and let him in. âI was expecting Logan with a lecture or something.â The creative was definitely experiencing some kind of mental block, as evidenced by the crumpled up papers thrown around the room.
Virgil looked at the mess for a second before readjusting his gaze towards the Prince. âWell, youâre never gonna guess who sent me.â He shot a smirk, and Roman gave a small laugh besides himself.
âAhâŠcan I rescind my invitation in?â
âNope. Like a vampire, once Iâm invited youâre fucked.â Virgil moved towards a pile of disregarded papers on the floor, with his host trailing behind him.
âAlas, this is what I get for letting my guard down around such a dangerous creature,â Roman sat back down at his desk, looking quite defeated. âSo are you here to kill me or berate me for not achieving Logan's goals?â
âYeah one second, let me look over the script Logan sent me with,â Romanâs eyes widened at this. Virgil chuckled,âIâm joking.â
âThank god,â Roman laughed lightly,âIâd rather you just kill me I think.â
âHmm, seems like a lot of work, and I donât like working,â Virgil sat on an ottoman near the desk. âSoâŠwhat is going on though, you donât seem to be on your A-game right now.â
âYes, I am well aware.â Virgil began to consider that he couldâve softened his words. âSometimes the creative juices just arenât flowing, you know?â
âGross description but sure.â
âIâm not on my A-game today, thatâs the best youâre going to get.â Virgil was definitely regretting that word choice.
âI mean, you are clearly creating,â he gestured around to the endless ideas banished to the floor.
âTheyâre all terrible.â Roman kicked a few of the papers around. Virgil had been skimming through the pile near him. Many of the ideas werenât great, but heâd never admit that out loud. But many of them were equally not terrible.
âI like this one,â he announced, handing the paper to Roman. It was an idea for a game Thomas could film with his friends based on old cartoons.
âAh that one. Itâs far too similar to videos weâve made before.â Roman crumpled up the paper (again) and threw it towards the other side of the room, but Virgil caught it.
âPeople liked those videos, itâs not the exact same. I think itâll work.â The irony of Anxiety comforting Creativity for his lack of pure originality was not lost on either of them, but they chose to ignore it rather than comment on ghosts from the past.
Roman let out a deep sigh. He thought for a moment, trying to create something better. In the end, he retrieved the paper from Virgil and put it on his desk. âThank you for your help, Virgil.â
âDonât worry about it.â The sincere comment and the eye contact Roman was holding made the otherâs breath hitch. Roman seemed to pay no mind, and turned back to his desk to attempt to embellish the video idea. Before Virgil left, he stole some glances towards the creative. It would seem that he found some inspiration, it showed in his eyes. The twinkle and determination would haunt Virgil for weeks, no doubt. Every piece of his being wanted to stay and continue observing Roman, but he walked away. It could never be.
Imagining how Janus must feel, watching Virgil and Roman get closer and closer. Theyâre practically best friends and it stings Janus in the heart because he was here first. And sometime ago when things were okay and everyone was together, they were all friends once. Virgil is bitter towards him. Roman is angry and maybe even wary. Sometimes Janus can hear them quietly making jokes about him. Janus thinks he deserves it. Janus had driven a wedge between him and Virgil to the point that he left for the light side. Janus then manipulated Roman, not knowing how fragile his heart already was. So itâs impossible for Janus to try rekindling anything with them right now. If he tries to talk to Virgil, Virgil will just walk away. If he tries to talk to Roman, Roman is much quieter and quickly leaves. So Janus is stuck watching the two of them.
Roman makes Virgil laugh and helps him feel at ease. Roman gets to hold Virgil close and give him affection. That used to be Janusâ part. He used to be the only one who could get his eyeshadow to sparkle. Now Roman seems to have figured it out and Janus watches Virgil sparkle around him and when Janus goes near, it melts back to an inky black much to his disappointment. And Virgil makes Roman smile, bantering back at him. Roman doesnât feel hurt or wary around Virgil. When Virgil praises him, Roman beams and preens and for a moment Janus thought he was glowing. When Janus tries to praise Roman, he grows wary again and he canât blame him. Roman only knows him for his lies.
Janus can only hide his guilt and longing, watching Roman and Virgil have each other. And Janus knows he canât be a part of that. He hurt them both. So Janus watches each day as Roman and Virgil become inseparable.

This chapterâs song is âBack to Decemberâ by Taylor SwiftÂ
It was quite obvious, even to the mostly oblivious light sides, that something had gone down in the darker corner of the mind. Normally, Roman wouldn't have cared much; however, comments made by Anxiety during his increasingly more frequent visits to their kitchen had intrigued him. The Prince had asked if his brother was once again being a nuisance, or if this time Anxiety was just there to take their snacks. The suspected thief had quietly responded, âIt's not the Duke Iâm worried about.â A riff between Anxiety and Deceit was interesting indeed, especially since no one had really seen Anxiety outside of the context of being one of Deceit's tools.Â
It was even more concerning when Anxiety had fully isolated himself from everyone, resulting in a rescue mission, acceptance, and name reveal. Roman didn't quite know how to feel. He was, of course, glad to see the dark sides fewer, and exponentially weaker as Thomas didn't know of their existence. He had also come around to accepting Virgil. However, this came with overwhelming guilt. For years, their whole lives almost, Roman had antagonized Virgil. And sure, he had been rude and abrasive, but so had Roman. If anyone was supposed to take the high road, it would be the noble prince, no?Â
He found himself dancing around Virgil in the common areas they now shared. Logan and Patton, having already built positive connections with him, were able to slip into a new groove of life easily, something Roman now found jealousy in. How was he supposed to seamlessly transition from harsh nicknames and arguments to being best friends? Did Virgil even want friendship in Roman, or had all the years of resentment prevented that? All of these thoughts zoomed through his mind as he mindlessly scrolled through the common TVâs menu. As if he had been summoned, Virgil popped in and b-lined to the kitchen for some chips. âGood evening Virgil!â Roman didnât know if his overly cheery greeting would be taken well or if it came off as condescending.Â
âSup.â The issue for Roman when talking to Virgil was that it was nearly impossible to tell whether or not the awkwardness was because of an issue or if it was just Anxiety being Anxiety.Â
âNothing really. I canât seem to brainstorm for any project at the moment, so Iâve resolved to watch a movie." Needing something to distract himself was the main reason for the movie, but Virgil didn't need to know that. âYou can join me if youâd like.â Is this bonding? Roman wasn't sure.
âHmm, depends. What are you watching?â Virgil was now leaning against the column which separated the kitchen from the living room.
âHow about Tangled?â Disney was a safe bet, they both liked that. Roman had never needed to try so hard to talk with someone before. The line between light and dark sides had been well defined since Thomas was a child. Never before had someone crossed over, meaning never before had any of them needed to start basically from scratch with each other.Â
âSure. Are you gonna talk through the entire movie again?âÂ
âAbsolutely.âÂ
âAlright..and Iâm the one who ruins Disney films?â Virgil had ended sarcastically. Roman turned to the other end of the sofa to gauge his tone. When he was met with a bit of a smile and a raised eyebrow, he relaxed in the trivial nature of the statement.Â
âWell we didn't get to this one that day, so you could still sweep in and take the chance.âÂ
âNah, Iâll just watch.â They sat at other ends of the couch and watched the film, Roman occasionally remarking on something stupid or funny he had noticed. As the film came to a close, the Prince rose from his seat and headed towards the kitchen.Â
He called back to Virgil, âIâm having a glass of wine, would you like one?â He didnât really know if Virgil drank. Logan did, however not in a particularly social way, and Patton definitely didn't.Â
âWhat kind?â
âRed. A merlot, itâs quite nice.â Roman took some pride in enjoying wine, it made him feel mature and royal.
âSure.â Virgil didn't often drink. He didn't like having his guard down and he was worried heâd blurt something out that he shouldn't. Tonight wasn't busy though, and he didn't see much harm. He also found himself wanting to continue spending time with Roman, a prospect that he would not be analyzing further for a root cause.
The two worked through two bottles of wine together to where they were both fairly tipsy. They had also moved towards the middle of the sofa and were barely watching the show they had put on in favor of chatting.
Virgil had known, from an outsiderâs perspective, that Roman was a touchy guy. He had seen over the years many hugs between him and Patton, and a general affinity for expression through physical means. However, Virgil had never experienced this part of Roman. Now, they were sitting close together and sharing a blanket. If you asked Virgil when the blanket came into play, gun to his head he wouldnât be able to remember. But now they were both under it, sides touching and limbs overlapping. Anxiety couldnât quite pin down the source of the feeling in his stomach that this entire situation had created. Maybe it was down to the fact that he generally did not like physical touch; however, no part of him felt like moving away. Maybe, he rather enjoyed it all, but he wouldnât admit that to anyone, not even himself. He decided to blame the wine.Â
Drunk ramblings hadnât produced much substance throughout the night. However, Roman had a question on his mind throughout the night, and with his final glass finished he found himself lacking the self-control to not ask, âOkâŠso what happened between you and Deceit, cause likeâŠobviously something did happen, and Iâm really curious.â
Virgil sighed. With an equal lack of self-control, he answered, âI dunno we just fought and broke up.â
âWhat did you fight about?â Roman was looking up at Virgil from his slouched position on the couch.Â
Virgil maintained eye contact with the wall ahead of him. âWhat didnât we fight about?â
âThen why were you even together?â Roman knew that he should probably let the conversation move on, maybe even die for the night; but heâd be lying if he said he hadnât been curious for years.
Virgil sighed again. âThatâs why we broke up I guess. Iâm not really sure. Heâs not all badâŠâ Roman gave an incredulous look, one that Virgil was able to catch in his peripheral vision. Virgil laughed softly, âHeâs a lot bad.âÂ
âYeah, you deserve better than that,â Roman commented. If he had been less impaired, he might've noticed the way that statement had startled Virgil. It's not like he didnât agree, or not even that he hadnât thought it himself, rather something about Roman saying it was different.Â
As Virgil lay in his bed that night, the world spinning more than heâd like it to, he took notice of how cold his bed felt without someone else there. He imagined someone else next to him, and it wasnât Deceit.
