Ack! So after i finished piece 3 (and 4 technically) I've been doing some sketching of what I want my next painting to be. Because I'm still figuring this out and I'm also working on a different assignment I don't really have a lot, so I'm just gonna explain what I'm planning and my inspiration (:
So I'll start this off with: I have never actually played/watched a let's play of Mouthwashing. I know about the main plot beats and how the characters/environment look and that's really about it. HOWEVER! I really enjoy the low poly design of the game. It's really what's making me wanna draw this at all
Of course I like how the characters are designed and the softer color palette of some segments, and I wanna recreate something with the same feeling.
Now I was thinking "how would I do this with watercolor" and I decided that I'm sick of watercolor and that I'll do an impasto acrylic painting. I thought not only will the color palette be easier too achieve with acrylic because mixing will be easier, but also the jagged look of low poly. So going along with that idea I looked up some interesting impasto paintings that aren't Picasso.
*starts bashing hand on table* THIS!! I WANT SOMETHING LIKE THIS!! it'll be fun to play with color and the different ways I could make the texture. AND I DID TEST IF I COULD USE ACRYLIC!!
WAH BAM! It's a bit hard to tell from this photo just all of these little test have a very nice texture, and I really really just wanted to touch my painting once I was done with it, which I can't do with watercolor /:
With my little tests I realized that a combination of both a palette knife and brush would make the best texture (because remember, I'm doing this for the texture.)
Anyways moving onto the actual sketches, I was trying to figure out how to do a good low poly on paper without making a 3d model (because that's hard)
I did use a lot of "how to make 3d models" tutorials to figure out what I should make them look like. As you can see, there was a lot of trial and error. I did eventually get it down to hop into the next round of sketches, the thumb nails.
I've never really been good at thumb nails if I'm being honest. I just want to jump into my finish piece. But with these thumbnails I learned that I want it in a Landry mat with it being slightly game-ified
For these I wanted to use one of my actual OCs and not something I made up on the fly, so here's James (≧∇≦)/ I do think that he'll a tiny bit cringe, (I made him work for the mob and a yandere (I hate using that word, but it describes him the best)) I've planned out how I'll do the HP and other HUD elements but the one idea that didn't come from my own brain was "put the scary face in one of the dryers" which was a great idea that my friend pitched because I was complaining that I couldn't find a good place for the monster. (Which I think the top left is the scariest one)
Anyways I don't think I can fit this in my concentration, so it's gonna be one of my 5 not in concentration pieces. I also might just post some sketche book pages this week or the thing I'm painting over, so it'll be a bit before y'all will see any progress on this ^^'
