I'm in the business of destroying people's lives

It started with my dad.

And please, be patient through this and it'll start to make sense.

My father didn't have it easy as a kid. His mother was a spiteful bitch that left him to die on the streets of El Salvador. He had a tumor hanging off of his neck, and his father and grandfather found him in the streets eating dirt.

They took him in for as long as they could, but there was a civil war brewing and he had to go. They gave him to the spiteful bitch and she brought him to New York.

I'm almost to my point, I promise...

In New York, his issue with the language was treated as a disability. My father was a smart man, but didn't communicate well enough in English to receive the opportunities he could have easily taken advantage of. No one helped him. No one tried to support him. The spiteful bitch allowed him to be in special ed classes to keep opportunities from him.

He learned english not from a program or a dedicated teacher or school, but by copying word after word from every book he could get his hands on.

But he never had support or guidance. He never fully understood what he was missing out on. When people didn't care, he decided not to as well. Then he encountered a new spiteful bitch. He met my mother.

And he was trapped in a manipulative relationship with twin babies on the way.

I ruined my dad's life by existing. And it may not be my fault, it may be a result of his own doing, but that doesn't make it any less true.

He did what he felt was the right thing. He quit school and worked to try and support us. That was fine in the early nineties.

He made a lot of mistakes and did a lot of things I didn't understand and found it hard to forgive, but I came to admire him. I wished I could go back and help him. Stop him from being unable to make better choices, even if it meant I could no longer exist.

So I became a teacher. I couldn't fix my father's reality, but I thought I could help kids understand this world and make them aware of opportunities. I wanted to be the support that was lacking or that didn't exist in my father's time.

I teach for the charlotte mecklenburg school system in charlotte nc.

I watch my father(metaphorically) every day. I try and work with him every day. I give it my all in terms of support and instructional strategies.

These kids I teach have been in the country for such a short time and are thrown into standard and inclusion classes. They don't get time or support. As a teacher, there are attempts to guilt me into passing them. They don't leave my classes each day having known anything more than when they walk in. They and I are set up to fail. I have begged for better options. I have begged for programs for them. I am made to feel like a shitty teacher for not being able to do what I was never equipped for. Teaching language acquisition isn't the same thing as teaching content. I was never trained, unless you count the english language learner 5 strategies email that hasn't been sent yet, by a woman who was made director but does not understand herself how to help these kids.

I'm watching these kids get discouraged and fail. I'm watching them give up. Instead of fixing things I feel as though I am contributing to the problem.

Most of all, I feel like a failure.

I plan on walking away, lord willing. I can't watch it every day. And when I walk away, it will be like walking away from the man I admire the most. A child that just needed a fair opportunity. I'm letting the system destroy these kids like it destroyed my dad. Like I destroyed my dad.

Work Day in Distress

So I woke up this morning, got ready for work and headed down to my car only to see that it is strapped to a tow truck and about to be repossessed. Lovely.

To top it all off, I had the fucking money. There was a bug in the automatic bill system where the money left my account but didn’t go anywhere. So I paid $2300 today to get my car that I already thought I was paying. My sister gave me half the money and I know she literally just threw away her summer savings just to get me out of this bind. She does things like this for everyone and I’m fucking helpless to help her.
