okay this post. the 'liking sports is just a competency kink' one. i was gonna say things in the tags and then i realized i was going to drift quite far away from the original post so. rambling here.

it's about watching a real life chosen one narrative but you don't know if the prophecy will be fulfilled. it's about watching a ragtag group of misfits come together in real time to become something greater than the sum of their parts. it's about seeing sisyphus roll a boulder up a hill over and over and over again and knowing that no matter how hopeless it seems, there genuinely is a chance that they will succeed this time. it's about watching the absolutely most cartoon-ish rube goldberg displays of physics beat the most OP hero in the world. it's about knowing that because of luck and skill and people having off days and just sheer determination, david WILL beat goliath some of the time. it's about seeing the hero who has gone through the long dark night of the soul come back stronger and better for it because they've learned an emotional lesson.

don't get me wrong, i ABSOLUTELY agree that a core appeal is just 'person doing thing very very well' that's SO real and so important! but the other core is that then all of us watching it collectively construct meaning out of it in real time.

last i’ll post about this unless an interesting discussion comes up, but when people say “these men are all terrible,” it’s not an endorsement or diminishing the cruelty of acts like the misogynistic joke about the women’s team, it’s a statement about parasocial feelings and “trying to find the wokest player/team to support.” i do not think anyone thinks that it doesn’t matter because of their social standing, but that you need to realise this is endemic in the sport and the guy in your icon and URL and gifsets is also complicit with it. it is up to you to draw that line and decide what hockey means for you. i myself have done a lot of thinking about it. it is good for you to think!

i lied. an addendum: if you have read books like crossing the line you are familiar with the degree of violence that surrounds young men in hockey, and i think it’s important to remember that dissent and “political correctness” gets weeded out pretty easily by that brutality. if your favourite guy made it to the NHL i can assure you he has been complicit with many bad things to get there. people who break the omertà of hockey don’t really go far
