The 'write for yourself uwu' culture shift has done real damage to fic writers imo. I recently had a post on the importance of strategic commenting break containment and I'm surprised by how many strangers who rb it in agreement feel the need to reassure in the tags that they do write for themselves, but...
There is a kernel of truth in the heart of this sentiment--if you only chase stats, you are unlikely to find joy in your writing. At the same time, I think we've veered too far in the other direction.
It is only natural to want engagement and the write for yourself crowd often overlooks how communal an effort fic writing usually is. So many story ideas are born from casual discussions about h/c's and favourite scenes and what ifs and the comment box is a cornerstone of this process. Not only can the discussions in the comment box be a hub for idea generation on their own, but even when the said idea generation takes place in DMs or Discord chats, commenting is often the first/easiest way into befriending authors; it's where community building starts.
Further, the write for yourself crowd similarly overlooks that the things a writer can write for themselves are often vast and many at any given time, and relative engagement levels across fandoms/ships can play a large part in which of those ideas a writer chooses to pursue--or whether they choose to publish their finished work at all.
In sum, I don't think we need to be this apologetic as writers for wanting feedback and engagement for what we post -- writing is hard work and it's only human that we want something external out of it in turn, however rewarding the process might intrinsically be.

THIS TBH
This goes for artists too.
I draw because I like drawing. I post it online, at the risk of having my art stolen or used to train ai, because I want people to see and tell me how much they liked it
art is a social activity. it's communicative, and crucially it's communicative both ways. sharing art is as vital a part of the artistic process as creating it. art is made to impact other people, so if you the artist don't recieve any feedback about that impact, the art is not complete
Christine: (supremely invested in the story she's reading, doing voices for the characters and everything)
Erik: (so smitten, he's barely registering a word she's saying)
I recently read the Gremlin Erik AU, written by Mertens on AO3, Part 1 called 'Tiny Maestro' (
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
)
, and I probably went red with laughing.. I suggest you go and read this, because it's well worth your while, it's absolutely halrious, amazing and at the same time, utterly heartwarming!..
Plus, it might enlighten you to what I'm going to say next...
But beside that point, there is another work, added on by @aphaea21,
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
(rated M) , in which Christine takes her singing lessons with Erik very seriously! I found some evidence today that instantly reminded me of the context in which Christine learns, and exercises her vocals and relieves Erik of his clogged workings.
There is a moth, which does indeed have more than one proboscis of sorts
And well... I just thought of Gremlin Erik being discovered by Raoul - after he gets shown this by a friend XD.
This is such ironic news I had to share.
Wow - that is bizarre! Thank you for sharing this, @enigmawritesstuff!! (and thank you for reading my terrible addition to the very lovely Gremlin AU)
I wonder if at some point I saw this moth, then blocked it from my memory because it’s just TOO CRAZY, and then my brain dredged it up from some dark recess of ‘weird things from the internet’ when I dreamed up that fic - that really is an odd coincedence if not!
I’d love to say I did extensive entomological research on moth probosises for my fic but I definitely did not... I thought I had made it all up but clearly the crazy moths got there first!! (Moths are awesome. And a bit terrifying.)
Just goes to show that whatever ridiculous, outlandish things you can imagine - nature probably got there first and put feelers on it! XD
In 2002, a flood in Prague caused some streets to collapse into a series of unknown underground tunnels. And just like that, a legit 16th cent. alchemist laboratory was discovered.
10 years of discovery, repair, and restoration later, it’s now open for tours.
On the outside, only a house was visible and it was used as a pharmacy in its time. Alchemists were notoriously secretive, so none but those on the inside knew about the tunnel system below where potions were made.
A room dedicated to herb storage. Many of the herbs in the potions came from China and India. The house was conveniently located by major trade routes.
Notice an alligator (or croc/caiman) above the left side. There were lots of stuffed animals, bottles, and books. Since few people in Europe had ever seen alligators/crocodiles, they were said to be the bodies of dragons, and were thought to guard the alchemists.
The alchemists were so secretive, they did everything themselves, down to making the glassware for their elixirs.
A stone in the wall that covered a hidden vault in the underground tunnels. Historians uncovered that it held a single bottle of ‘The Elixir of Life’ and the recipes for it, and the elixirs of love and memory.
This bookcase is an exact replica of the original, which was too damaged to restore. A statue on the right side (in the dark area on the third shelf from the top) is the door knob/switch to a secret sliding door.
Monks now recreate the elixirs exactly as detailed in the instructions and each of the elixirs (and blends!) are for sale in their shop. The only change is that the Elixir of Life does not contain opium as is instructed, since it’s now illegal.
