time for important questions!

do you folks think that Murderbot is watching its media on an accelerated speed?? x2, x10, maybe even x50 -- it probably has the processing speed for that!

I think it does, bc with having a mind that's significantly faster than a human's, consuming information on human speed might be boring. and this would obv allow it to consume more media faster! but maybe it doesn't do that, bc then the emotional impact is not as big or smth, or maybe bc MB actually wants to stretch its media for longer, especially while it was still stuck with the company and was very bored

the only relevant canon line I can remember is "It’s downloaded seven hundred hours of entertainment programming since we landed" from ASR. 700h is not that much (~29 earth-days), but also MB might have had thousands of hours already in its storage, so it's hard to judge. let me know if I'm missing anything else from canon!

in the paragraph of ASR it mentions being free for well over 35000 hours and watching “little under 35,000 hours of movies, serials, books, plays, and music”. if it was whatching at 2x or 4x speed (plus skipping all the sex scenes) itll probably have been wayyy more than that, even with the time spent in shutdown imo.

i personally think it watches them on normal speed. i watched a lot of videos on 1.25x or 1.5x speed but it fucks up the timing of scenes plus music so i dont watch shows/films that way. plus its used to watching humans on 1x speed most of the time. so i think for maximum enjoyment/appreciation/stretching the media it has before getting new ones/etc it watches on 1x speed even if it could theoretically watch it at 4x or 8x. might also have something to do with the organic part of its brain or any other stress hormones like cortisol moving at 1x speed in the body. if an action scene causes an adrenaline spike but MB is whatching it at 50x speed, it would be stuck with the adrenaline in its system for the rest of the episode/movie

I have a question for any murderbot diaries reader. i was reading the secunit anatomie part of the TMBD wiki and it makes mention of constructs having a 'power core'. I tried to look for mention of them in the books but i havent been able to find anything specific (besides mentions of power cells and recharge cycles).

how/where does murderbot describe having a 'power core' ? The name makes it sound like something that generates power like some sort of fusion reactor that creates energy to recharge their power cells or something??

I think it's a minor mistake, the miraheze wiki quotes Artificial Condition chapter 6 as the source of that line, and I'm guessing it's based on

I needed a power source to get the station operable again, but fortunately I had me.

We don't have any information on its batteries or anything like that, or how its power is generated past what you've described sadly u_u (it also mentions a power train in Platform Decay but I suspect that's not what you're looking for)

Yeah i read that whole chapter earlier hoping to find something more detailed but i didn't so i just thought it was somewhere else in the series.

I wish we had more info but unfortunately MB is extremely allergic to describing itself if its not super plot relevant so im not too surprised in the end.

I have a few questions about SecUnit biology in The Murderbot Diaries. So we all know that Murderbot doesn't need to eat or drink and that it recharges or goes into stasis instead of actually sleeping, and that it has some organic human tissue. But what kind of organs does it have? In the beginning of All Systems Red when Dr. Mensah visited Murderbot in its cubicle, it thought about how one of its organs might "fall off and plop on the floor." I assumed it was talking about a kidney or something in the digestive tract, but I'm not sure if Murderbot needs or has those organs.

A second question: does Murderbot have saliva? I don't know if saliva is necessary for speech or not. If Murderbot does have saliva, does it have to brush its teeth? Does it ever get bad breath?

Third question: Does Murderbot sweat? It's mentioned showering in Artificial Condition, Rogue Protocol, and Exit Strategy. After ART did surgery on it in Artificial Condition, it took a shower and said that it smelled like a clean human and how that was odd. If Murderbot does sweat, how does it get the water and electrolytes back without eating or drinking? Are they replenished during its recharge cycle?

So those are my questions about Murderbot's (and by extent other SecUnits') biology. My apologies if these questions have already been discussed a lot though!

the only one id confidently guess about is the sweat: it basically has total control over its own temperature (it often mentions it ups its body temp during client retrieval all the time) so sweat would be redundant and if vellus hairs can be coded to just not manifest at all then sweat probably can be turned off too. so-

WAIT nevermind the fandom wiki says secunits can indeed sweat. i checked and indeed it does so in platform decay at the very least. also they indeed dont have digestive systems but idk about organs. stuff like liver feels important but i dont think an organic heart is 100% necessary??

saliva is specifically for eating food so that feels redundant too but i was wrong about the sweat so???

OMG I just found another meaning of the title "Artificial Condition". So I'd thought of how 1. it's a pun on human condition (I noticed that before I started), 2. it starts with ART (this may have been a coincidence) and 3. it's explicitly in the book, where Tapan says the fairly nonsensical thing about fear being an artificial condition. But I just noticed her definition of artificial condition: it's imposed from the outside. So, 4. the massacre on Ganaka Pit was caused by an artificial condition.

This is all wild, because the other titles have at best one meaning that I can make out, usually none.

exit strategy is with rescuing mensah/being rescued in turn/escaping TranRonHylla in general and then being given an exit strategy at the end of the book
