            The mage leans on his staff as he walks, half a smile on his lips.             Tired though he is from battle, Anders' mood is surprisingly relaxed

so I had this thought about Cole and Anders crossing paths…

Cole knew that a lot of mages traveled alone these days; since the Circles had rebelled, any who weren’t directly involved in the war tended to keep to themselves to try and avoid being drawn in against their will.

Still, he hadn’t expected to sense anyone this far from civilization; that was the precise reason he’d come so far out - to calm himself, away from every painful memory in the city.

So it was a surprise to find himself sensing pain nearby, just as he’d sat down to rest; frowning, he followed his instinct to find the source, although he remained out of sight for the moment. As he drew closer, the pain only grew louder; rage and fear, all tangled up in a knot that seemed to consume the mage’s entire being. The last time Cole had encountered this much pain, he’d killed the one suffering. He’d thought it was mercy.

He knew better, now.

"It’s alright," he stepped into view, speaking quietly - trying his best not to startle the man. "They can’t hurt you any longer."

The worst was over. Kirkwall and all the bad it stood for lay far behind him. He had hoped that his actions there might ease the burden he had chosen to carry. It hadn't. Justice had been calmed to some extend, giving the mage back some control over the spirit that he had previously lost. He could find a measure of peace in that, regaining control had been something he had desperately wanted in Kirkwall, too. Though now that he had it, he wasn't sure he wanted it anymore. Allowing Justice to dominate his personality had kept so much of the hurt he felt at bay.

Thinking about that wasn't doing him any good either. It brought on a new wave of negative emotions. Fear, loathing, guilt, and more insecurities than Anders could even begin to count. He leaned heavily on his staff, willing himself to keep walking. Knowing that staying on the move was essential to his survival. And yet he could not. Not now, and certainly not like this. Not alone. His former associates would see him dead for what he'd done. All but Hawke. And it was Hawke he needed now.

Sinking to the ground, Anders sat down on his knees, head resting against his staff. A moment was all he needed. Just some time to take a breath and collect his thoughts and--- His head snapped up, wide eyes watching the boy in surprise. Justice had not stirred at his approach, nor had Anders heard him before the kid had spoken up. Had he the strength, he would be wary and on the defense. Instead he smiled, looking worn out and exhausted while sitting there.

“I will just assume you know I am a mage.” if his clothes had not yet given him away, the staff would have. He must have the look of a hunted man, why else would the boy say such things?  “They will find a way. A templar is never far behind.”

It was that little smile that Garrett had sought for regardless of the means he employed, and to succeed made him just that little bit smug. So he didn’t resist as Anders tore open his shirt (though he might have preferred it to be in a different context) and instead offered a wide grin to the pirate not a few feet away who was cleaning her blades and wolf-whistling. They shared a love of inappropriate comedic timing, and Garrett would never not appreciate it.

        “Me? Capable of looking after myself? Perish the thought!          That would require a degree of responsibility.” 

A genuine jest of course, but Garrett found himself distracted by a painful tug and his sights snapped downwards, to be joined by the curl of his lip and a vaguely disgusted noise. Blood that had soaked through the shirt (and perhaps some of his own) was now matted in his chest hair (no doubt a product of the heavy chest plate that had been removed just moments prior) and caught the healer’s gentle touches. He hated being dirty. Well, this kind of dirty. 

        “We’re having a bath the second we get home.”

Anders rolled his eyes at the two, knowing better than to respond to it. Doing so would be taken either as an invitation to continue, or a challenge to see who could get under his skin first. The mage was by no means prudish, and he didn't consider himself to be uptight. Sometimes though---

        “And we couldn't have you act like a responsible adult.             Who knows what'd become of Thedas then.”

His hand glided over Garrett's skin, starting from his side and moving upwards towards the man's chest. One cut had revealed itself already. Shallow, and not in need of Anders' immediate attention. If there was anything worse (he was convinced there was) he'd be sure to find it, dealing with that before anything else. Like Garrett, his attention was drawn to the mess of hair and blood, fingers getting caught on messy curls, freeing themselves only to get caught again elsewhere. It seemed unlikely that there would be a wound there, of all places. Still, he needed to check it for his own sake.

        “We? Don't I get a say in this anymore?” as if he would truly object. Anders' hand trailed back down to the one gash he had managed to find, pressing his palm against it. Best to heal what he could before they had to move on again.

        “I'm rather fond of this look, you know. Seeing              you all sweaty and bloody has its appeal.”

You’re the only one I can think to write this letter to.

Besides, who else would want a letter from me?

I apologize for disappearing without a word. By now I have no doubt that you have heard some rumors surrounding that entire mess. I am doing fine, helping whoever I can, whenever I can. I can’t tell you where I am, as I am sure you’ll understand. I can’t risk you or anyone finding me. No one leaves the Wardens, after all.

I write this letter because I have a confession to make. Those maps you had saved…I’ve not only taken them, I have had to use them as well. You’ll no doubt have heard that by now. Let me assure you it was not for my own gain, you know I despise the deep roads with every fiber of my being. It was to aid a friend.

You would have liked him, being the hero type and all. He reminded me of you, headstrong, with the same stubborn streak, and the same horrible luck. Helpful. It’s odd.

There’s something different about him. Things haven’t been easy since I left the Wardens behind. I didn’t expect any different— being an apostate, you come to expect it. But he treats me better? It is the best word I can think to use. I am skeptical of his intentions. Having a healer on board is always beneficial to any individual who can stomach the thought of associating with an apostate. He is one as well, but that wouldn’t automatically mean he would treat me any kinder than any non-mage. Yet he has. We work together for our own gains, or so we started. But I think I can call him a friend. Which I suppose I already did.

He’s easy on the eyes, too.

"Just relax, you’re going to be fine and then you can hug me all you like." Hawke knelt down beside his friend, taking his arm and slinging it over his shoulders in order to help Anders to his feet. Holding him steady, he quickly glanced over the mage, checking him for injuries. "Are you alright? You have got to be more careful wandering around at night. I can’t always swoop in just in time, you know.”

Anders knew that if he so much as tried to chuckle, he'd only end up coughing. And that would send him into a world of hurt beyond what he was suffering from now. He could manage this, he knew that. No reason in taking that ability away from himself. “Thank you.” Grateful though he was to be helped, he was careful not lean on Hawke too much, trying to stand as much on his own two feet as his body would allow. Oh yeah, he'd be feeling this for a while.

        “And here I thought I had found a new and effective           way in which to get you to appear at my side instantly.”

        “I feel like I am bruised all over, but that should be           the worst of my injuries, I think. It's... ah, nothing           I can't handle by myself. Unlike those thugs just           now. So, thank you again. I owe you, Hawke”

Modern AU where magic is still a thing. Modern AU where magic isn't as strong or common as it was/is in canon, but there's still those who are born as mages. There's still some prejudice. But mages have a lot more freedom. They're still watched, still trained, but they keep their freedoms for the most part.

Modern AU where mages hide their ability, uncomfortable with the idea that they might get treated differently for it, or who hate the idea of being forced to make their power known to the authorities. Mages who teach other mages to control the powers they have in after school classes or workshops. Small mage communities where they can come together safely, apostate or not, to learn and help each other.

Modern AU where they get a chance to have proper jobs that allow them to use their magic.

Modern AU where Templars are more like social workers, paired with veteran mages so they can better help magic users. But also Templars who enforce the law and keep regular folk safe from mages who stray. Who also try to make sure that mages register themselves as mages.

If you romanced Anders in DA2 and then left Hawke in the Fade in DAI, the Inquisitor should have had a random encounter with a demon of vengeance later.  You loot a ring with the Hawke crest on it from the body, as well as a codex entry letter from Hawke to Anders, all peppy and promising to be home soon.

It had been a long week of sifting through rubble with his fellow Chargers, but they had finally made it back to Skyhold. There were a few carts filled with crates and various other things that could be put to use at the new base of operations. Krem ran a hand along his face, smoothing back his hair when he heard someone speak to his right. "Hm? Well…that’s not nice to say. I think Skyhold is a bit better than Haven if we’re bein’ honest."

The mage shouldn't be surprised that he'd been heard. Or rather, he was surprised someone had bothered to respond to him. Turning his head towards the boy beside him, Anders instinctively pulled the cloak he wore a little tighter around himself. He wouldn't let his posture betray any more discomfort than he already did, so subtly hiding himself in an article of clothing was the better option. Not to mention that it was cold. Just another thing he didn't entirely like about Skyhold.

        “I can't say I've been at Haven.” he paused.            “We were on our way there before-- well,              I'm sure I don't have to tell you what happened.”

A lie that was easy enough to tell, and not too difficult to believe. The journey trough the mountains had been long and people were eager to tell their own tales to pass time. The common element in these had always been that people wished to join the Inquisition. Either to get shelter, or to help.

        “I suppose that you're right.             It may be a mess, this place is still impressive.”
