ATLA head writer Aaron Ehasz on the new Netflix live-action ATLA series: “more creative freedom”, “has a lot going for it”

Aaron Ehasz, the head writer of Avatar: The Last Airbender, recently opened up about the new live-action series coming to Netflix. 

Here are the quotes in full:

“I think it’s an opportunity for the fans. It’s definitely an opportunity for Mike and Brian to do a live-action telling of this story right, which I think is both going to be a combination of how they cast it, how they creatively cast it, who are the producers and writers involved.”

When it comes to casting, we know they’re holding an open casting call for the main characters later this year. We also know that Dante Basco, the original voice of Zuko, is likely going to be in it (not as Zuko).

As for the people behind the lens, we definitely don’t know any of the writers or directors involved yet. On a show of this scale, you can expect at least four-to-five directors, and the same number of writers, per season, and new writers and directors each season with maybe some core mainstays. It’s unlikely any of the team of writers that worked on the original Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, and Voltron: Legendary Defender make the transition to live action. As for Bryke, who are showrunning, it remains to be seen how many episodes they (or just Mike) write personally. It could range from only important tentpoles like season premieres and finales (as was their MO on ATLA and Books 2, 3, and 4 of TLOK) to hypothetically all the episodes (like TLOK Book 1, though that would be a lot of work for hour-long episodes and is extremely unlikely).

We do have new confirmation of one person working on the show:

The Nickelodeon executive who was in charge of ATLA during its original production and airing is now at Netflix and “championing” the new live-action series.

This again comes from Aaron Ehasz– here’s exactly what he said:

“The executive who is championing it at Netflix is Jenna Boyd, who was our executive on Avatar at Nickelodeon. So it has a lot going for it.”

Jenna Boyd is Director, Kids & Family Series at Netflix. Aaron’s wording (the word “championing”) makes it unclear whether she’ll actually be in charge of the new show as well or is simply supporting it in a personal capacity, being an alumni of the original series. This might actually be an important distinction because it could indicate the overall tone and maturity of the new show, depending on whether it’s under “Kids and Family Series” or not. Definitely keeping a close eye on this.

In fact, Aaron also touched on tone:

“Hopefully, also the tone. One of the things that was always hard about Avatar that I don’t think translated well to the movie was that it does have this balance in tone that it’s dramatic and epic and emotional, but it’s also funny and quirky and delightful. I think they’ll find that.”

Overall he sounds very positive!

“I know, they have a big challenge ahead, but they definitely have more creative freedom, more support, and a better chance to tell the authentic story in a way that I think the fans of Avatar will enjoy.”

To be clear, he has no involvement with the new series.

The new live-action ATLA series is coming to Netflix in 2020.
