Really not even entertaining the people getting mad about what they’re doing with Korra in Seven Havens. It’s perfectly clear from the trailer that something caused her to either be turned evil or possessed by some dark spirit to do what happened. And if you’re not emotionally mature enough to wait and find out the WHY and just be offended by that WHAT, then maybe analysis of fiction isn’t your forte.

Plus I hate how everything in this fandom that paints characters as morally grey at all is just deemed as “bad.” Zuko doing some questionable things even after he’s redeemed? Oh that’s bad writing. Korra’s development isn’t perfectly linear to her being mature and level-headed? Bad writing. Aang making mistakes? Ruins his character and bad writing. Bolin putting blind trust in Kuvira and helping her? Now he’s a problematic and unlikable character. It’s so annoying.

I think sometimes having characters be tragic and making you feel emotions about them makes a story good, not bad, but all of you with the emotional intelligence of an avocado just want absolutely no stakes and no drama whatsoever.

fwiw I think Korra will be fine on this front because she's famously canonically queer already so they'll try to be respectful but the Zuko gag really tells on a certain lack of grace when it comes to acknowledging general queerness

A few of the changes you said Netflix would pull don't actually feel like bad ideas at all. What's wrong with getting Katara more recognition or seeing the old masters being a little more proactive? Yes, that would've been fanservice, but that's not exactly a bad thing, just saying.

Because the show is the legend of KORRA, not “the legend of the original characters as told through the time period of someone else.” The reason the old characters are not in the show as much is because filling up the show with fan service characters that have nothing to do is not good writing.

And you seem to misunderstand: they would give Katara a statue solely, but remove any mention of her training Korra, being a master, etc. because they are as surface level of writers as the people who beg for Katara to have a statue are surface level thinkers. It’s not more recognition; it’s literally just a physical embodiment of her in stone. And it would only be there because the AI bot they use to write the story picked up on the uncritical thinkers who complain about that.

My recent reblog has got me thinking of how comically bad a Netflix live-action adaptation of LOK would be. A few friends and I collaborated on what would happen:

• Korra would learn airbending in the time skip between B1-B2 rather than it being unlocked due to her other elements being blocked.

• Katara would be dead and have a bunch of statues to satisfy the dumbest of the fanbase, but her impact on the world would be entirely erased and she would just be present as an occasional reference.

• Zuko and Toph would be present throughout the entire show despite having nothing to do. They would get the exact same “whoa the old people can still fight” scene in every season.

• Bolin and Mako would still have living parents who just disagreed with their choice to be pro-benders and are estranged from them because of it. They would have no other tragic backstory to them.

• Every single one of the seasons’ moral quandaries would skew the wrong way: B1 would be black and white and say that non-benders in general are bad, B2 would make Unalaq clearly villainous towards Korra from the start rather than being nice to her, B3 would skew pro-totalitarian rule and side with the Earth Queen, and B4 would be pro-fascist.

• Side note to the above point - the Earth Queen would be portrayed as a tragic figure who loved her people, but at the same time they would still show her subjects suffering, much like how NATLA softened Ozai but for some reason still has him do the same evil stuff he did otherwise.

• Korrasami and Makorra would be teased consistently throughout, and whichever route they chose at the end wouldn’t make sense.

• Harmonic Convergence, the Red Lotus, the Zaofu arc, and other things from later seasons would be crammed into B1 purely for fan service.

• Korra will constantly insult and belittle Asami.

• Korra will only gain skill or wisdom if a male character either teaches it to her or causes her to learn it.

• Bolin will explain his entire thought process out loud during the scene where he learns lavabending, which will happen way too soon in the story in a scene with much lower stakes.

• They will spend at least 10 minutes showing Kuvira killing citizens because violence = mature writing…I guess.

• They will change the circumstance in which Su gave Lin her scar for no reason whatsoever.

• Lin will not do what she did in B1 and betray the police force for the greater good because the show will be vehemently pro-corrupt cops and hate women.

• Jinora will be as sidelined throughout the show as Katara is in NATLA, if not worse.

• Instead of being a stressed but well-meaning teacher for Korra, Tenzin will be generally mean to her and everyone else for no good reason other than lack of nuance. Much like his father in NATLA.

• Fire Nation and its royal family have more of a presence but entire lore gets fucked up.

• Varrick is not portrayed as morally grey and is just a bad guy until they decide he isn’t at the very end. He also has none of the personality he has in the show and is just a boring CEO villain stereotype to be “more realistic.”

• The Kataang children’s beef is simplified into Aang just being a bad dad rather than the nuance of his responsibilities and Kya & Bumi’s feelings of Tenzin’s privilege being the driver of it. It will be solved off-screen.

• The Fog of Lost Souls appears in B1 purely to throw a bunch of old characters in it for fan service. It won’t be limited to just Zhao.

• Korra won’t have her connection to the past lives severed because they don’t want any stakes and they don’t know what to do without endlessly referencing the prior avatars for fan service.

• Lin and Tenzin’s complex relationship will be simplified into Lin and Pema having beef that is never solved. Tenzin will be equally mean to both of them.

• The Beifongs (as in Lin, Toph, and Su) will be separated by some contrived tragic circumstance rather than complicated family dynamics. Lin and Su will be happy to see each other despite having the ability to do so for decades.

• Avatar Wan will be a painting in the background of a single scene.

• Pabu and/or Naga will be killed off and revived for cheap emotional effect.

• All the airbenders created via Harmonic Convergence will just willingly join Tenzin. There will be no arc about them having to search them out or convince them to become air nomads. They will just magically appear and be air nomads.

The people that enjoy Netflix’s ATLA would’ve unironically enjoyed the M. Night movie if they were never told by smarter people to not like it.

So I’m getting reblogs on some old anti-NATLA posts talking about the pre-release media saying Toph would be “more feminine” that are saying that the new movie also did that to her and “ruined her.”

I think it’s just a byproduct of people being way, WAY too stereotypical with how they treat less traditionally feminine characters. You can find so much about Toph being some ultra butch lesbian everywhere, but she ultimately shows no interest in women, and even is disgusted and embarrassed for accidentally kissing Suki. At the same time, she’s shown having multiple crushes on men. Sokka, Satoru, Tagah, Ohev, etc. throughout ATLA and its supplementary materials. She even has a named baby daddy in Kanto.

Toph being a slightly promiscuous adult woman who is attracted to men does absolutely nothing to make her a weaker character or a weaker female character. This is the same genre of argument as saying Katara is a weaker female character for wanting to have children and raise a family, or saying Pema is a homewrecker and useless character for being, well, not Lin Beifong.

This fandom is brutally stupid when it comes to trying to promote progressive ideas then shoehorning the portrayals of them they deem good into the most stereotypical, reductive, and ultimately harmful versions of them.

The absolute ridiculousness of ATLA fandom shipping will never make sense.

Toph shows some form of surface-level attraction towards Tagah in the movie, and the fandom that has no issue shipping heroes with bad guys has made exactly zero pieces of content surrounding it.

Meanwhile, Zuko catches Toph once in battle and suddenly they have this “insane buildup of romantic chemistry that’s been festering for years” and were “always perfect for each other” and whatnot. You see essay after essay about how Toph being Fire Lady makes sense and that Zuko is definitely “Kanto” (because we’ve just dropped that being a nickname for Sokka now) and whatnot.

Literally you guys just picked who you thought the hottest two adult designs were and decided to reverse-engineer some crazy romantic chemistry between them. Like, ship what you want idc, but what are we even doing anymore?

Can someone explain why Katara and Aang ended up together? And why so many of yall SUPPORT IT? She rejects him multiple times throughout the show and is annoyed with him. She’s also referred to him as her little brother and said he’s a “sweet little guy like Momo”. She has to act like his babysitter for a good majority of the show as well. The writers had her be put off by him and the idea of being with him for 2.5 seasons just for her to just randomly kiss him in the end after not being interested the whole show? She showed more interest in Jet who she interacted with for like three episodes? hell..HARU as well! And he wasn’t even a love interest. And that’s not even getting into how the ship is bad for Aang’s character as well! Having him be creepy and push himself on her for so long. Showing him have little to no self respect or growth by still pursuing her even when she makes it clear throughout the series she doesn’t view him that way? I mean the writing is? Interesting? To say the least…I’m genuinely shocked at how much people actually like the ship. On top of that what about the portrayal of Katara post the show? Now in the movie she’s head over heels all over him while her entire role is just being Aang’s girlfriend after being uninterested and off put the whole show? 😭 there’s no way you people genuinely enjoy the ship. It’s not good for either character. Honestly the ship kinda makes it hard for me to watch each rewatch…I wish the writers would have let Katara be with someone she actually enjoys being around rather than a buddy who she tolerates and Aang have some self respect and not be creepy. That’s one thing I’ll say about NATLA the show isn’t written well at all but at least the writers aren’t having Aang try to gain points with Katara and they don’t have him being pretty creepy/crushing on his babysitter.

Genuine question, but how come people who ship Zutara can forgive/explain Zuko's flaws but never do the same extend to Aang? I get that both of them are different characters but even so, it doesn't make sense to me. If you can put nuance and understanding to Zuko's trauma, why not do the same for Aang?

Zuko is older, more muscular, and more conventionally attractive. That’s why. Has nothing to do with any character analysis whatsoever.

If Zutara shippers think they can use a piece of shit AI-generated fanfic like NATLA as proof of their ship being canon, that means by their logic anything from the M. Night movie is equally as valid and can also be used to invalidate the original cartoon. Or even what NATLA sets up.

1 - Katara should have spent the actual book dedicated to water mastering the element of water. Even the M. Night movie got that right. NATLA forgot she even existed.

2 - Azula being “primed to take over Ba Sing Se” is fucking braindead. She took it over from the inside-out, not by being “primed to do it.” Great job nerfing yet another female character.

3 - Piandao lives in the fire nation and trains Sokka while he is in disguise as a FN citizen. Why is he in Book 2?

4 - Combustion Man is in Book 3 of ATLA is there because Zuko is assuring that Aang is actually dead so Ozai doesn’t find out he didn’t kill him. Aang is very much alive in Book 2 until the finale. Why is Combustion Man in Book 2? Is it just for fan service to show cool man using explody powers with his mind? Absolutely.

Can NATLA please actually try or are we still going to get the equivalent of a Chat GPT script? Can we stop using characters purely for fan service that are meant to actually move the story along? Can we fucking kill this abomination of a show already???

I don't believe that Azula was born evil. I think that people who do otherwise are idiots.

Conversely however, I do feel that a lot of people - i.e. Azula stans - go out of their way to downplay Ozai's influence on her (which I don't consider Azula's fault, btw) in favour of demonizing Ursa for not being a perfect mother. And I'm under the impression that they generally do so because they feel Azula's more "redeemable" if she's the way she is because of an emotionally neglectful mother, as opposed to a toxic and imperialist culture that she was happy to spread and be a part of. And I don't feel it's a coincidence that many of these people scream, shriek and void their bowels over the comics not immediately having her become a better person - similar to Maiko shippers who complain about the comics not having them immediately get back together in an unnatural manner - claiming it's sexist writing and what have you.

Yeah I agree. I’ve made plenty of posts on the matter. I’m not sure what causes them to hate Ursa so much other than blatant internalized sexism and/or trying to present some “hot take” to make themselves feel special.
