tattoo explanations under the cut

The mirrored tattoos are meant to reflect the ideas of Hina and Kū within the body, with Lehua representing the Hina/feminine side and Kou representing the Kū/masculine side, with the idea that the two of them together form a single “Body” on the battlefield. Also, combined they carry on a single legacy, that of their father, who was a dragon type specialist. The tattoos themselves mostly make use of teeth and spearhead motifs to represent strength and warrior spirit, with minor wave motifs as a reminder of flexibility and adaptability, and that they are not strictly defined by the “side” they represent. & ofc parts of it are supposed to look like dragon scales. For the back side, obviously it’s the dragon type symbol. For the front, the large diamond eyes and the rows of teeth underneath is supposed to evoke a kind of draconic face. The diamonds are also meant to reference the shape motifs on Tapu Koko. The moon and sun also reference the side each one represents, and is additionally a reference to the Sun/Moon games. It also shows the time of day each one is typically active.

I try to put as much care as I can when using cultures I don’t belong to in my art, so if there does happen to be a native hawaiian reading this, absolutely let me know if there’s something more I can do to make more faithful designs in the future
