Is it Halloween yet? 😢 Little doodle I made, inspired by a cute pic of a frenchie I saw in a ghost costume and thought of this scene in my head.
My Cuphead / vintage cartoon - sona! ✨📽️🎞️
This was for my year (class of 2022 at Sheridan Animation) for our Facebook banner. Was a lot of fun. The task was to make yourself into a vintage cartoon, but there's so many style it was hard to decide.
Any suggestions for someone lookong to go to Sheridan?? I really wanna go and im working on developing some portfolio pieces atm. But id love some advice from someone who actually got in!
I feel like my advice kind of sounds like anybody else's but here it is nonetheless:
(Sorry my answer is long now in hindsight 😅)
-The most important advice is to follow the requirements EXACTLY. Every year the portfolio is different but if you don't do what they ask of you, you won't get any marks in that category/section. Like for ex. A friend recently did the portfolio this year, and for the animation section it said something along the lines of "animate an object". They at first was already doing a walk cycle, but I advised him to be on the safe side, and to do a literal object like ball. It's good to have other people even read the requirements with you and just double check, and run through it to see if you both interpreted the requirements the same.
- Start life drawing early!! And keep on going even though you feel you got your chosen pieces. I believe life drawing is very helpful at rounding your overall skills as an artist (so it's more important than you think in the long run even though it's not worth the most on the portfolio) Life drawing is a motor memory skill so you get better if you do it more often (That is if you can afford it) On your down time even do 30sec tiny sketches spanning to 3 min poses, at home by using a website like lineofaction.com, and fill a couple pages in the mean time if you can't go to life drawing that often. It will loosen you up and prepare you without knowing it. Both the lifedrawing and storyboarding sections I believe are the most underestimated.
- Storyboarding might be the most difficult since (if the portfolio is the same) you only have 4 panels to tell a story. But don't feel the need to make your drawings perfect! I feel there is no reason to do it digitally because you are just giving more work for yourself. It's the story that counts! Leave an impression for the audience and make it engaging overall. The background does not have to detailed. Make sure whatever you are showing in your panel is clearly telling the audience what is happening. Ask yourself "how is what I'm showing, progressing the story or why is this important? Can this panel be taken out? etc. etc. ... " Show your storyboard to your family/friends even if they don't know anything about art. If they are able to tell what is going on in the story without you explaining it yourself, then you are gold. It's good to not have any text in the panels themselves. Also if you are doing the storyboard traditionally do not do it in blue pencil! (the under sketch may be in blue but there should be black lines over top) Black pencil is bold and clear.
- Overall, encourage yourself, don't get swept away by self doubt and procrastinate. It takes more time than you think to complete the portfolio fully. The animation portfolio does ask a lot if you are a new artist.
-If you are international make sure you know the time difference between your region and Ontario, Canada! I heard a lot of people didn't realize that so they missed the portfolio due date by a day sadly so in the end they could not submit their portfolio.
- I liked doing my portfolio traditionally, (only my personal art pieces and my animation were digital) I think there is some personal merit to doing it traditionally though.
-Give yourself a whole day to look all your pieces over, and decide which to put in the portfolio, and edit your photos (in terms of bumping up the contrast or brightness)
-Last tip, seek critique all the time! I mean it! With everything you do! Don't take the criticism personally or feel bad if they say something negatively. Listen well to what they have to say and get yourself pumped to show them something better!!! 🔥🔥🔥 A cool quote I heard from a recent Sheridan grad (credit to @lawliipop on twitter) is "Ask for critique from someone who inspires you and ask for critique from someone who scares you" 😉
New ocs, they in college. The gang in order goes Kiara, Ben, Jenny and Jude.
Hopefully will do some quick sketches of them and maybe a lineup. I should really post more sketchy stuff in general. 😖😥

Forgot to post this too. This was my last animation assignment of second semester of first year. Lots of fun but I felt like it was rushed. 😅
This is a bit late but this my cover for my school zoo portfolio from second semester when I went to the Toronto zoo! ✍️📒🦁🐯🐗🐵🐦☀️
My biggest struggle there was navigating, having no time to draw and not finding the animals I wanted to draw. The park was big and I'm peeved that there was hardly any time to draw 😥 plus it was pretty cold outside ❄️
