Customer: Youâre closing? You never used to close this early. [Proceeds to sit down with a coffee for 45 minutes after closing time while I clear up around them.]
1. Yes. Yes we did. The closing time has never changed. Iâve worked here for eight years and I know what time we close.
2. Regardless of whether weâve always closed at the same time, it doesnât change the fact that right here, right now, on this day, we are closed.
âHow much is this cake?â
[Points to the price label stuck to it.]
âWhat teas do you serve?â
[Points to the huge sign with a list of our teas on it.]
âI pressed the button for your lift and it isnât working.â
[Points to the line printed in bold capitals on the lift door which says HOLD BUTTON UNTIL LIFT DOOR OPENS.]
âWhat time do you close?â
[Points to the signs at every possible entrance to the café with our closing times written on them.]
âOh, are you closed now?â
[Points to the absence of customers, the mop in my hand and the sign they walked past to reach me which says SORRY, WE ARE CLOSED.]
Indeed. (I think Triumphâs probs a capybara.)
I remembered after posting that the Hobblepots (and possibly others?) refer to him as a gerbil, although he doesnât have a gerbilâs tail. I think we can safely conclude that Triumph is a Triumph.
Recessive genes getting a chance to shine and mate selection are my short explanations.
Hair color is a little more complicated than people would think. Even Iâm boggled! Carriers can display the dominant genes while the others lurk inside their DNA.
I dunno what Iâm saying anymore because Iâm tired but I encourage everyone to look this up because itâs neato nerd stuff.
Technically true! My query is more because I consider it unlikely that both Alexander and Cassima carried a recessive blonde gene, but as you say, itâs certainly not impossible.
And itâs also because I forgot that human Edgar has lighter hair.
In any case, genetic theory probably takes second place to magic in a land populated with goblins, fairies and giant guinea pigs.
I need to rant about something which is making me feel vaguely uncomfortable. To tumblr!
I donât want to be one of those people on tumblr who feels the need to cry social oppression! at every tiny provocation, but something is bothering me and that something is the birthday party thrown for my second cousins.
Quick backstory: two of my cousins, who are sisters and both lovely people, have a son and a daughter respectively whose birthdays are pretty close to each other. Theyâre still quite young so they have shared parties; this yearâs theme was âPirates and Princessesâ.
The theme itself doesnât annoy me. All right, thereâs an unspoken gendering there, but technically thereâs nothing to stop a kid who wants to go for the âunconventionalâ costume. What has been irritating me more and more the more I think about it is that every single child, without exception, was dressed in the ârightâ clothes. All the girls were princesses. All the boys were pirates. Not one person, adult or child, thought to question that it should be otherwise.
Donât get me wrong, I wasnât genuinely expecting to see boys in dresses when I glanced through the pictures, I donât give society that much credit yet. But not one girl dressed as a pirate? Really? Iâm female and I love pirates. My favourite games when I was that age were the Monkey Island games. Peter Pan was one of my favourite Disney films. I used to pretend my motherâs washing basket was a ship and sail it around the garden with my baby brother as first mate. Are you telling me not one of the girls at that party would have preferred getting to wear a fancy coat, pirate hat and toy parrot rather than being put into a mass-produced glittery pink dress?
Maybe Iâm being unfair. I also loved My Little Pony, Barbie and the colour pink when I was that age. Maybe I would have wanted to be a princess. But the assumption that âgirls are pretty princesses, boys are scruffy piratesâ, combined with the reinforcement of gender stereotypes in 4 to 6 year-olds, is really grating on my nerves.
It sounds really silly and petty (these are kids having fun at a birthday party, Tozby, lighten up and stop reading so much into it), but this is the same boy who gets cooed over for being cute when he writes a story at school about how âboys are stronger than girls, boys fight, girls canâtâ. I never see anybody stopping to question the mindset behind all of this. And my cousins are teachers, intelligent people shaping the way these children see the world. Would it be so very hard to maybe not set up such strongly gendered roles for kids? âGirls canât fight, huh? Then how come Mummy can pick you up and tickle you to death, bwahaha!â
Trust me, if I really wanted to go full-on tumblr-sjw, Iâd start talking about how it reinforces rape culture in that boys get to be the marauding male domineers while girls are the princesses whose job is to shut their mouth and do what the men tell them. But I wonât. Because I like talking about pirates. Canât have people questioning my reasons for having a blog dedicated to a crew of seventeen pirates based on my own arguments.
Also, it looks like Rosellaâs comb on Gwendolynâs wrapping paper.
Finished Kingâs Quest: Once Upon A Climb. I enjoyed it far more than the second episode, but one burning question remains: why are Rosella and the grandchildren blonde?
Adorable Polar Bear Plays in Flower Fields
Canadian photographer Dennis Fast took advantage of his stay at the Canadian lodge Churchill Wild in Manitoba to capture this rare sight. Popularly known for its proximity to polar bears, Fast took snapshots of an adorable polar bear playing among the fireweed field. The bear is seen rolling among the lush field, as well as eating some of the stunning plants.
Polar bears are known to be one his favorite subjects, which he captures on ground level, unlike other photographers. His main objective as an artist is to capture wildlife sceneries and adventures, which are rarely experienced by others.Â

Words of Wisdom from Mad Dummy, Undertale
So a long time ago I drew the ghost family, and to this day it has the highest notes of any art Iâve posted and it continues to get notes. Currently it sits at just shy of 6,500 notes.Â
At the time I drew that piece, I wasnât aware that I had missed a ghost - the training dummy from the Ruins! The way Iâd played through Undertale at the time, I thought Mad Dummy was talking about Napstablook, but when I did another playthrough and got the training dummy to leave out of boredom and therefore changed Mad Dummyâs dialogue, I realized.Â
I also have had some practice at drawing the ghosts, when last time that was essentially my first time drawing them.

...I love that the Dealer seems to be in a more mundane setting, something like the back room of an inn as opposed to a huge hall shrouded in darkness.

[From a discussion on Vivec, Talos and CHIM, circa 2014.]
"A character that, when you've killed them and reloaded the game, responds by killing you the next time you see them, and then when you reload the game after that walks up and asks you how you like it. That'd be pretty hilarious.â And I'm imagining a sort of meta-fictional hardcore mode where, since the ability to save and reload game is part of the character's abilities in the game, there might be circumstances or enemies that could prevent you from saving or erase your save games.
