hi jones! i know through mo that you went to ccad and im a freshman there now and i was wondering if you have any tips? stuff like what teachers to avoid etc

hellooooo! i hope you enjoy CCAD ♥ its a good college and columbus is one of my favourite cities…

let’s see… teachers to avoid… IF YOU CAN…… (u may just have to suck it up lol none of ‘em are THAT bad) tardino, if he’s still around, is awful! when i was there he taught illustrative drawing and it was an important class to take but he was so frustrating to deal with. so was walter king, but im not sure what he’s doing. when i was there he was teaching commercial illustration and design for illustration. he was a nightmare, because he was terrible at communication and taught me nothing worthwhile.

assuming you’re going into illustration (which i recommend; ccad’s animation program is definitely lacking), make good friends with mckissick. mckissick is a hard-ass but he’ll be one of the best instructors you’ll ever come to know. hazlerig is also a wonderful instructor; he’s very deadpan but he’s so funny and gracious and incredibly helpful. robert loss and mike laughead are working on a comics class together; pay attention to what they’re doing, they’re good men and instructors! robert also teaches a critical analysis of comics class that is a FANTASTIC course.

take all of the classes you can possibly burden yourself with. it’s so important that you get all of the knowledge you possibly can in the time that you’re there. take classes outside your major!

i recommend majoring in illustration and either minoring in or just taking a ton of animation electives. illustration will teach you all of the composition and colour and storytelling you need to learn and animation will teach you how to push it further and exaggerate it.

that’s all i can think of off the top of my head… but if you ever have any questions about CCAD or columbus or whatever feel free to ask! i’ll help the best i can. SOCIALIZE! GET OUT INTO THE CITY WHILE YOU CAN! ENJOY COLLEGE BECAUSE ONCE ITS OVER AND YOU’RE AN ADULT YOU’LL MISS IT

freshman year seemed like make-or-break for a lot of us. pay attention to your foundation classes! they'll inform you long after they're over.

use tools and stuff the school offers! Like the cintiq lab in kinney. Respect the equipment and ask for help if you need it

visiting artist lectures can be pretty good or pretty boring, but usually pretty good. Go check out as many as you can, even if they don't pertain to your major, you may still glean something worthwhile

A couple blocks away is the main branch of the columbus library, and you should be friends with it. get a card and check out stuff. audiobooks, fun comics, movies, music, reference books, etc. between that and the ccad library, you have a great pool of interesting stuff to utilize

if you need an art supply for a class, and have the time for a trip, see if you can get it cheaper at utrecht

lastly, remember to eat well and attempt to get good sleep. key word here being attempt

African American flappers and Jazz Age women

There were many fabulous African American flappers. No wonder - it was African American musicians who put the Jazz in “The Jazz Age”! The Charleston dance iteself, which so epitomizes the era, made its debut in the all-Black musical “Runnin’ Wild”, and no one danced that flapper number better than Josephine Baker…save possibly for fellow Black artist Florence Mills, who claimed credit for inventing it (she said she debuted it in her “Plantation Revue” in the early 20s, developing it from a dance popular among slaves). The Charleston song was written by Black composer James P Johnson. Without women and girls like those above, the 1920s would never have roared.

10 typical perspective errors

Drawing perspective is considered one of the hardest things in art, except the mistakes usually done are pretty much always the same and can be avoided with a little care.

1. Lines not reaching the vanishing point

Well this is pretty simple to avoid but it’s the most common mistake. It’s probably due to either carelessness or really not having understood the basic of perspective. I encourage you to go back and find some basic tutorial for this.

Anyway, be ALWAYS careful about where to ‘send’ your lines, they NEED to go towards the correct vanishing point or it will just look awkward. Double check if necessary.

And always, ALWAYS use a ruler.

If your style requires lines that are a bit less geometrical (as mine do, I have a style of inking that’s sketchy so ‘perfect’ lines drawn with a ruler usually don’t fit well in the picture) use a ruler anyway for the pencils and then ink later by freehand. At least you’ll have correct guidelines underneath.

For traditional drawing be sure you have a ruler and be sure to use it for each one of your lines.

Modern drawing software will help you a lot with this if you draw directly on computer: painting software such as Clip Studio Paint or Manga Studio 4EX or 5 have perspective tools that will automatically snap your lines towards the vanishing point.

There's also a free program put out by Epic Games called Carapace. It does perspective lines, it's pretty easy to use, you can drop in photos and reverse-engineer the vanishing points to help you learn about perspective, and you can save what you make in Carapace as an image to drop right into photoshop, perfect for tracing and drawing.
