“I didn’t feel anything. It’s not even a holiday here. I woke up early, walked through the streets, and listened to prayers on my headphones. I might have bought myself a cupcake after dinner. If I was back in Egypt, I’d have gathered with the whole family for dinner. We’d have a specific type of juice, dried figs, dates, apricots in water. On the way to the mosque we’d give all the children treats. Everyone would speak to each other in the streets. It’s quite beautiful. You see all the happiness around and think, ‘Yes, it is Eid.’ But here I celebrated all alone. My plan has always been to go back home eventually. I knew if I wanted to go further in journalism, I would need to study in the West. But the plan was always to go back. I always imagined having a family, and getting married the traditional way. But I’m finishing my doctorate in November. And now that it’s getting close, I’m not so sure. It feels like maybe I’d be sacrificing myself for tradition. I’d be like everyone else: becoming a mother, raising my children, and nothing else. Maybe I could become a lecturer at a nearby university. But there’s not a research culture. It’s not about innovation. You can easily get stuck teaching the same content for years. I want to keep going to conferences. I want to travel, not just for tourism, but to do something important. To develop myself. To share my ideas. To have people say: ‘We learned from you.’ I don’t have to be better than everyone else. I just want to contribute. But at the same time, my mother is back home. She’s all alone. She’s growing old. And I don’t want to miss this part of her life. I’m not sure what to do. But I need to decide soon.” (London, England)

“I’ll tell you something about self love that took me a while to understand. Self love is like a selfie. You don’t need anyone else. You are self sufficient and happy. Yes you take a while to get the angles and such right. You struggle with getting to know yourself and working with acceptance and adjustment of the same. But you get there. And you take some bomb selfies. But if all you ever take are selfies, you won’t be able to capture beautiful things other than yourself. And life is beautiful. You need someone to take a picture of you to capture more beauty. Your camera roll should be a mix of selfies and non selfie pictures. Your life should be a mix of self love and external love. And there is no prescribed proportion. And neither is there an instagram to compare and compete with other’s loves. Love yourself. But also let love in. And remember to get behind the camera because you don’t want to forget to love too.”

sebuah maaf yang tertahan karena aku belum fasih bahasamu;
Nelson Mandela bilang kalau bahasa kedua sampai ke kepala, namun bahasa Ibu sampai ke hati. Kira-kira begitu.
Berhitung denganmu
SATU kali aku pernah jatuh cinta.
Tuan, dimanapun engkau berada, kuharap kau bahagia, selalu.
Perjalanan Menuju Perkuliahan #2
Bagian 1
Jadilah, Annida versi 14 tahun sempat ingin belajar Antropologi. Ibu saya garuk-garuk kepala dengar saya dengan antusiasnya cerita.
you know girls who always smell like vanilla and fresh laundry? the ones who wear a lot of the makeup you know nothing about? who tell you you look nice even though you rolled out of bed ten minutes before?
or the girls who look punk and goth and maybe scary to approach but are some of the friendliest people you’ve ever met? the ones who don’t care for what other people think or say at all? the ones who cut their own hair and make their own t-shirts?
the girls who wear the same sweatshirt 5 days a week? the ones who laugh with you in your car until the last second before you have to part ways? the girls who have gummy worms and redbull for lunch because they stayed up til 3 am the night before?
the overly-excited girls who hug you every time they see you? the girly girls with surprising interests like geology or dungeons & dragons? the girls who take 500 pictures with you because they want to remember that they saw you?
the girls who have to stop and think about what you said to them because they’re sleepy? the girls who always smell like coffee and have their hair in a bun? the ones who you can always rely on to have a quiet day with?
perhaps the girls who drag you by the hand around a mall and show you all their favorite stores? the ones who take you to a craft store and make personalized picture frames with you? the ones who always seem to make it feel like summer?
you know…girls??
Bisous,
A
To lead yourself
Today I woke up late in an important exam. Last night I munched on garbage until my stomach twisted and flipped until 2 am. I ended up sleeping at 5 and missed the 8 am exam. Fortunately, I am the child of the Universe and the Universe gave me a very understanding lecturer. Thank you, ma'am. And thank you Mother Universe.
This is the 3rd time I missed something in the morning due to my fucked up sleeping habit. I am a night owl and since living by myself I can decide when to sleep and when I am going to be awake. Sadly I always make bad decisions. I realized my lack of self discipline and how easily I got carried away by lust and worldly desires. It's horrible.
Do you know the poem "Invictus" by William Ernest Henley? It goes like this :
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.
I adore this poem and especially the last line. Mister Henley must be some sort of a Buddhist monk to be able to have the willpower to write that kind of sentence. I heard that he wrote it when he was in prison, as a means for him to never give up. How awesome!
"I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul"
You know I can say that I am a failed captain. If my soul were a ship it would be Titanic. Long drown and frozen and broken.
I believe in God and honestly it's comforting to say that the misfortunes that happened in your life happened because of God. But I know it's not true. I can say that more than 60% of bad days that happened in my life is caused by me and myself only. Moreover it is caused by how I always choose instant happiness over a struggle to sustain a long term happiness.
I've always been told that I have what it takes to be a good leader. Annida is confident, outspoken and gets along with everyone... if only they know how I am deeply insecure and cannot even lead my own goddamn self. I hate being told what to do yet without someone like that I don't function properly.
You ask, if you know the problem then why don't you do something about it?
That's right. I will. I know that I have the capability to do that. I am able to taught myself English and French, so it's time to be more than just a teacher but also a leader for myself. I should make that as my New Year Resolution.
I have to remind myself that not only self love is important but also self discipline. I just realized how we are just inhabitants to our body and soul and it's necessary for us to have a good relationship with it.
To lead other people, we have to know them and acknowledge their problems.
To love other people, we have to accept the good and bad and would want to develop for the better together.
It's just the same with ourselves, I guess. It will take time but little steps matter.
I have decided that I want to be the master of my fate, the captain of my soul.
thinking of my internet friends
The other day I had a huge argument with my friends.
We haven’t talked much ever since.
In the big part, it was my fault. I enforced my view on them and undermined their opinions with the argument that they are privileged white people who live in a first world country. They thought I was being silly. I knew I was, and usually, I was never a person who held their pride so high. But I was being like that. We exchanged some nasty insults and I don’t know if the friendship is still repairable after that.
Another thing is, I have never met them in person. You read that right, they are my internet friends. Our friendship is already fragile with the extreme time differences, different background, upbringing and communication style let alone added with nasty arguments. I couldn’t offer my apology with an ice cream treat, or a hug, or even a small pat in the back. Just words on the screen, falling to the edge of no account.
Sometimes I feel like they are my friends from the stars. I like the concept of it, as I love them very much but they are simply unreachable. I also like to imagine that the messages I sent zapped through the radio wave of satellites or fibres under the ocean. Or how the postcards and small packages I sent to their homes on the other side of the world carried micro traces of me. A drop of my sweat, my tears, my fingerprint- some letters were even contaminated with my kisses.
In retrospect, being friends with them is like leaving a big mark on the world. Not a very useful mark like Nelson Mandela’s or Einstein’s but at least it’s there. I have never been to Europe but I technically exist there, in a way. In my friend’s minds. In their hearts. It’s vice versa for my friends who have never been to Indonesia.
With the development of technology, this kind of relationship is inevitable. More and more people found their jobs, friends even love through the internet. In my wildest daydream, I invented a theory that though physical matters cannot be teleported with the current technology, feelings can. I have never been hugged by my friends, but when we talked for hours I felt their warmth. And now that they are mad at me, I couldn’t see their backs walking away, yet I felt a stab in my heart. Physically for me, they don’t exist. Nonetheless, when we stopped talking I could feel the absence.
How wonderful human brain is, it could feel beyond time, beyond distance even beyond logic itself. (I understand now how Artificial Intelligence (AI) development is so much more than just a tech research)
Sigh, I saw my unusually empty phone screen and realized how much I missed them. I really should say sorry.
random thoughts entry
When I’m typing this, I’m supposed to be writing an essay. But it is due next week and of course, I would prefer to do it really close to the deadline where I will end up not getting any sleep then complain about the government and the education system in the morning. I know, after all, it’s just me. I am so lazy.
At this time of the year, the city- no, the whole country is rather wet. I don’t like rainy days. It’s gloomy, melancholic and cliche. People who romanticize it must be people whose fathers are not helicopter pilots. These are the days when my Mom would pray a bit longer –it’s always been long, imagine how giddy my brother and I would be. We are non-religious stuck in a religious family. Not that it matters a lot. My parents’ love is the kind of love that I have no doubt about. I think they are the only ones who are able to love me back. Even though it is super biased.
Almost six months have passed since I live on my own and I hate to say that I actually love it. I got homesick for the first two weeks and after that, I gradually enjoy having the whole flat by myself. It’s like having my own little world where I am the leader and I make the rules then I face my own consequences. Of course, I had rough times too but I felt like the universe has aligned to help this little girl on her way.
On weekends and empty weeks I usually have people over. My friends, three or four or five or six of them would crash on my couch and we would just watch a movie or giggle over porn. Then I would just ignore them after 5 hours because I would get sick of the noise, the mumble, the gossip. It’s like as if my little world has been invaded by aliens. Funny cause I am the one who invites them over when I get bored of being alone.
Really, to call me a walking paradox is not an exaggeration. I wonder is it just a nice way to put that I am a hypocrite? If so, then should I feel bad?
Actually, I’ve had enough of feeling bad about myself that I stopped caring anymore. Some people see it as a way for me to become an asshole. That’s not true. The thing about me is, I almost never have a bad intention towards people. When I am being rude to people, it is me hating on myself. I hope this thing about me never changes. I hate seeing people get hurt or disappointed. That makes me want to vomit. People disappoint me all the time but I don’t mind. I just shrugged it. Most of the times I feel like I deserve it. That’s how much I dislike myself.
