6:00 am was early for a majority of people on campus, but it was the time when Sam could take the opportunity to go for a run. He would wonder later if he should have realized something was amiss, if he should have felt it in his gut, done more to help her but he didn’t. So when he opened the door to head out, he was surprised to see a bag and a note sitting there. His suspicious nature had him almost close it, too many curses befallen in the last three years, until he looked at the handwriting.
It was Dani’s. He took the bag and shut his door, walking into the living room so he could read it. His heart jumped as he realized what this meant. She was gone. Sinking down onto the couch, he read over the note one more time before seeing the other one.
He touched the pendant around his neck, muttering a single word, not believing it at first. It couldn’t be real, but she would appear if he called her. But when nothing happened, he knew. And if he knew anything about her, it was too late to even try to find her.
Knowing what he needed to do with the other note, he got up and walked over to the trash can. After getting a match out of the drawer in his kitchen, he formed a large bubble to go over himself and the room so the smoke wouldn’t reach the smoke detector.
Looking at the note one more time, committing the name of the shop to memory, he put the note into the can. Lighting the match, he carefully touched the tip to the paper. Once the paper was sufficiently nothing but the color of charcoal, he activated his magic circle. Water, surround this fire, put it out.
With the fire burning out, he waved away the water so it would dissipate before wandering back over the couch, looking at the other note she left him. He would have loved nothing more to escape, to be free of everything. But something inside him said he should stick it out. Keep moving forward.
He would find her eventually. But the fight wasn’t over and he wanted to be here no matter what.
