ATTENTION ZINE CREATORS, ARTISTS, AND ANYONE WHOSE BUSINESS UTILIZES PRE-ORDERS AND PAYPAL

As of June 15th, 2018, PayPal has changed their user policy with little to no fanfare at all in ways that could literally destroy your business. I’m going to say this as plainly as possible:

DO NOT USE PAYPAL AT ALL IF POSSIBLE.

I know this is a lot to ask, especially since PayPal is the most globally accepted digital tender, but unless you want to lose access to your funds for six months and PayPal possibly forever, you need to read this.

PayPal Business accounts are now being flagged, locked, and completely shut down if:

1. If you haven’t shipping anything within 21 days of your first transaction

2. You’ve received more than 200 orders

and/or

3. You’ve made an excess of $20,000 (USD)

If this happens to you, you will not be able to access your money for up to six months. PayPal is NOT willing to work with you, all they will say is there’s nothing they can do, they’re cutting business ties, and offer you the MAILING address of their legal department. That’s right, you can’t even get a direct line to these people, they’re just going to tank your business by dicking around with your money for six months. Your only options are to:

1. Wait six months and frustrate customers, and by-proxy tarnish your reputation.

2. Refund everyone, possibly lose their business, and tarnish your reputation.

3. Pursue the matter legally, which will likely take longer than six months anyway, not to mention cost money out of pocket.

IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY USING A PAYPAL ACCOUNT FOR PRE-ORDERS, GET OUT NOW. Deposit your funds and part ways with PayPal as a tender, this is not a battle they’re willing to let you win.

Thankfully most of my stuff is filtered through other sites first but fucking here we go again.

It used to be you could get around this by marking your stuff as digital goods that dont need shipment notification but I dunno if that’ll work anymore. All I know is paypal has been making it increasingly difficult for a lot of artists and creators lately and it’s a logistical nightmare for a lot of us.

Why are they doing this? It seems to make their service clumsy and unusable. Is Paypal drunk and dumped so badly they turned mean??

It’s likely another way to try and stop sex workers or adult content creators from using their services.

It started out with “you can’t use a stage name unless you have a business account”. Which means you get a chunk of your money taken as a processing fee, but get to use a “business” name instead of your real name AND LOCATION, cause that’s a thing they were forcing you to post too unless you upgraded.

People used to tell me all the time when they put a tip in my tip jar that it was telling them my real name and the city I lived in, so eventually I bit the bullet and upgraded to avoid that. (Which is why ko-fi was/is so great, because it’s essentially a paypal wrapper that lets you use the service while not revealing your identity and location.)

But they’ve been making it increasingly harder and harder to run an online business for anyone who doesn’t ship physical items that can be tracked. Like part of it is likely to ensure that customers are getting what they paid for, but when it comes so quickly on the heels of numerous policy updates regarding sex work and adult content, it is undoubtedly linked to making it more difficult for those people to use their services.

Patreon might be doing my head in with their site constantly breaking, and they fuck up on communication issues a lot, but this is largely why they changed who they do their payment processing with, to avoid paypals “no naughty business” policies. They still use paypal and Stripe, but they moved their handler to other countries with less draconian laws, and broadened to other payment processors because of this kind of thing.

When I get my own site up, I will not be using paypal, which sucks cause everyone uses paypal. But I also cannot abide their business practices and ethics. Or the apparent lack thereof.

So when you do digital goods you go to “TRACKING INFORMATION” and then select “ORDER PROCESSED” and you’ll be fine and won’t get into trouble!

sorry for the non-art post but as hurricane Florence continues slowly through the Carolinas, a hoax that started circulating in 2017 is making rounds again and I’ve already seen it on tumblr even though appliance experts and flooding victims advice NOT to store your important items inside a dishwasher

people spreading this misinformation are prefacing it with ‘’my cousin/aunt/whatever who survived hurricane Katrina said…” so it sounds like sincere advice from a trusted person who actually tried it, and I don’t get WHY they feel the need to lie about something so simple when it could endanger people

A dishwasher isn’t waterproof. It is not designed to keep flooding water OUT.

Dishwashers can also get loose under hurricane winds and end up somewhere outside the house.

People WILL lose their most priced stuff because of this!!

No people article 13 is not what these people are making it out to be!

Yes the article has issues due to some vague language, however it will and can not target run of the mile everyday internet users. The mere notion of this is absurdist conspiracy bs. They literally do not have the capability to do this shit.

Article 13 is mostly targeted at big link sharing platforms and is there to force said into paying for licenses from content creators and is trying to stiffel fake news sources and online Nazi propaganda.

Memes and all other fandom content fall under the right of fair use. Link sharing also won’t really get a fine since it’s not you who will pay for it but the webserver you want to post them to will. If you want to share a news article *publicly* on tumblr you might get a notification that they don’t have the licences for said article, which if the news are from a reliable recognizeable source will be a none issue.

You also won’t have issues distributing links in private chats.

*Could* article 13 make stuff more complicated? Yeah. There is the possibility that it will cause some inconsequences for content creators who base their craft on sensationalist news (people like LeFloid, a german youtuber for exampel)

Will it be this world ending major event that will make the internet unuseable for everyday users? Nope. Will it crack down on fandom creators? Off good luck trying that on the entirety of Europe to begin with.

Here is what most likely will happen if the whole thing really gets through, every EU country will decide to what degree they want to follow through with this, most already have laws in place that will prevent a absue of this legastlisation and will most likely just put minimal restrictions in place.

If not people can still go on the streets and object twoards the changes and seeing as these clowns probably want to be reelected they most likely won’t object to being loser on some copyright laws that don’t get them personally any money.

So really, take a chill pill guys, stop spreading exagerated fear mongering. Your memes and fandom content won’t be in danger.

Youtubers might get some issues but honestly, that site already had copy right issues and has filters that meet the qualifications of the legastlisation.

So to sum up: Should you go against article 13? Yes. The article might have good intentions for media creators and would kick major companies like Google in the nuts, however it’s phrased really clumsily and should really be revisited and overworked.

Will it destroy your memes and favorite youtubers? Nope. Most likely not. It will force the platforms you are on to rethink their bussiness models perhaps. You personally will most likely not be affected.

Anyway, opose the articel but stop fear mongering people.

Article 13 is the part of the copyright reform that we’re the most worried about because of automated upload filters. Now, I have heard that upload filters has been removed from the article and that things aren’t so bad after all, but I have yet to read the article myself.

I’m still going to be fighting against this, however. We don’t need a change in the existing copyright law. Not like this, at least.

Step one: let him hide or shy away from you if he wants to. He wouldn’t let me touch him for a couple days after we got back from the shelter. His comfort was more important than me getting to touch him.

Step two: make yourself nonthreatening. In my case this meant being very quiet, bringing food and lying down on the ground within his eyesight as an invitation to investigate.

Step three: watch his body language and don’t do things that make him uncomfortable. Turns out my cat often bit when he was overstimulated so I made sure not to overwhelm him.

Step four: draw lines, but not with brute force. Even though his biting wasn’t meant to hurt, I wanted to make sure he wouldn’t injure anyone in the future. So I decided when he bit me, I’d yelp “ow!” And then withdraw all physical contact for a few minutes, sometimes leaving the room. Now he never bites, but sometimes he puts his teeth on my hand and then thinks better of it.

Step five: provide a good outlet for destructive behaviors. Aka PLAY WITH HIM, SEVERAL TIMES A DAY.

Step six: be patient.

Step seven: get lucky and somehow pick up the best cat in the entire shelter. I don’t know how it happened but he’s a godsend. He’s literally cuddled me out of a panic attack. We both really needed each other.
