Lee Heeseung has left EN-. I'm speechless and devastated...
I admit this situation is very weird (Engene or not) no matter how you look at it, but ultimately it is the reality as of now.
I feel his decision (regardless if you are angry with HYBE/BeLiftLab or angry with Heeseung himself) shouldย be respected. I dont think EN- should disband over this either ,or that we, as Engenes, should move to bring Heeseung back, as I have seen in debate online...
Many have compared this to Mark Lee of NCT being removed from NCT Dream and put back to make the unit a seven-membered unit again. However, that situation was very different from this one...
I will continue to support EN- and Heeseung as their journey now goes into their own paths.

FINALE
------------------------------------------------------
A study of lies. A test of morality. You're watching, but are you really innocent? Secrets, alliances, and deception blur the lines between right and wrong. Who can you trust when no one is telling the truth-and someone is always watching ?
------------------------------------------------------
One Year Later
The cafรฉ windows were fogged from the cold outside, but inside it was loud-- too loud for four people who flinched at every sound.
"Hyung, if one more person asks me what it was like to 'betray my morals', I'm gonna lose it," Beomgyu muttered, slumping lower in his seat.
Kai laughed, soft but tired. "At least they stopped asking if we deserved it."
Yeonjun snorted. "Barely."
A group at the next table kept stealing glances. Phones were angled just enough to be obvious. Whispered recognition followed them everywhere now-- Mask Study participants. The ones who turned on each other. The ones who survived.
Taehyun stirred his drink slowly. "We could've sat somewhere quieter."
"And miss this ?" Yeonjun gestured vaguely. "The stares. The rumors. The think pieces..."
Kai leaned into Beomgyu's shoulder, unashamed. Beomgyu didn't move away this time. The skinship was warming. It was instinct now, comfort built from something broken and reforged.
"You ever think," Kai said quietly, "that we're only friends because of what happened ?"
Silence lingered.
Then Taehyun answered, honest as always. "Yeah. And I don't care."
Yeonjun exhaled through his nose. "Same. If that study didn't happen we'd still be strangers. Distant."
Beomgyu tilted his head, eyes flicking to the cafรฉ's mounted television as the channel changed. "Oh," he said. "Speak of the devil."
The screen flashed text:
*****
LIVE INTERVIEW.
BEHIND THE MASK STUDY.
*****
The cafรฉ quieted-- not because people wanted to listen, but because they needed to.
The screen filled with a familiar face. Director Choi Soobin.
Clean cut. Soft smile. Warm eyes. Just a man in a tailored suit, hands folded calmly in his lap.
The interviewer's voice was smooth and cautious. "Director Choi. Or do you prefer Dr. Choi ?"
Soobin chuckled lightly. "Either is fine."
Kai's fingers tightened on Beomgyu's sleeve. Yeonjun didn't blink.
"Your study," the interviewer continued, "sparked worldwide debate. Some call it revolutionary. Others-- inhumane."
Soobin nodded, thoughtful. "Morality often resists being observed. People prefer to believe they know themselves."
Taehyun scoffed underneath his breath. "Bullshit."
On screen, Soobin leaned forward slightly, as if speaking to someone just out of frame. "But the Mask Study didn't change anyone," he said gently. "It revealed them."
The cafรฉ patrons murmured. Beomgyu swallowed.
The interviewer smiled. "And the participants ? They've become... something of public figures."
"Yes," Soobin agreed. "Fascinating, isn't it ? How people form bonds with one another."
Kai whispered, barely audible, "He is just as eerie as he was during the study..."
On screen, Soobin's gaze lifted-- straight into the camera. Almost straight at them.
"At the end of the day," he continued, voice warm as honey, "the study was never about punishment."
Yeonjun's jaw clenched.
"It was about honesty," Soobin said. "About asking a simple question-- how far will you go to protect yourself ?"
The interviewer hesitated. "And now that it's over... what's next ?"
Soobin smiled wider. A practiced smile. A familiar one.
"Well," he said, folding his hands. "Human behavior is endlessly complex."
The screen lingered on his face. "And I'd hate to stop observing now."
The cafรฉ felt colder. No one spoke. The broadcast faded to commercial.
Beomgyu finally exhaled. "He's doing it again..."
Kai nodded. "The mask."
Yeonjun stood abruptly. Not caring who glanced in his direction now. "If there's another study--"
Taehyun cut in, calm but sharp. "-- then the world will volunteer for it."
Outside, cameras flashed.
Inside, four people sat together, closer than ever, bound by the truth they could never unlearn.
They imagined it vividly, Soobin's expression.
Was he still smiling ? Smiling at their emotional scars ?
THE END.
You think this is really the end ?
Yes
No
THE MASK: TRAITOR
End Has Come
------------------------------------------------------
A study of lies. A test of morality. You're watching, but are you really innocent? Secrets, alliances, and deception blur the lines between right and wrong. Who can you trust when no one is telling the truth-and someone is always watching ?
------------------------------------------------------
Well, you're still here.
You've watched them claw at each other. You perched on the edge of every poll, pretending your voice carried some moral weight.
How precious.
You stood back while alliances shattered. You leaned in when suspicion bled into violence. You enjoyed the chaos-- don't deny it. In fact...
...you voted for it.
YOU ARE NOT INNOCENT.
You think you're different from them ? From Yeonjun's fury, Taehyun's pride, Beomgyu's fear, Kai's opportunism ? From every lie told, every truth weaponized, every suspicion you encouraged ?
If morality were absolute, you would have stopped reading. Looked away. Called this cruel...
But you didn't.
You stayed. You voted. You enjoyed it. You reveled in it.
You are just as morally grey as they are. And infinitely more interesting.
Pretend your hands are clean if you want to.
But we both know the truth, don't we ?
You were apart of my study too. Wearing the masks you chose to wear...
- Soobin

A study of lies. A test of morality. You're watching, but are you really innocent? Secrets, alliances, and deception blur the lines between right and wrong. Who can you trust when no one is telling the truth-and someone is always watching ?
------------------------------------------------------
The room is still humming with the aftershocks of Soobin's reveal-- like the walls themselves are trying to comprehend what just happened. Every pair of eyes stays locked on the man who used to be "Soobin" but now stands like a ruler returning to a throne he has always owned.
He doesn't hide it anymore. The posture. The stillness. The slow burning satisfaction in his gaze.
Beomgyu and Kai cling to each other in a corner-- not touching for comfort, but to keep each other from collapsing. Yeonjun still sat on the ground, red marks covered his arms from where the guards held him down. Taehyun is the only one not showing fear-- he stands with his arms crossed, jaw set, eyes burning.
Finally, Yeonjun breaks the silence.
His voice cracks. Not from weakness-- from betrayal. "Why..." He swallows hard. "Why the hell did you make this study ? What the fuck was the point ?"
Kai steps in, barely louder than a whisper:
"Yeah. Was it all just... some kind of sick entertainment for you ?"
Taehyun pushes forward, chin raised. He doesn't ask. He challenges. "Explain yourself, Director."
Beomgyu flinches at the title.
Soobin lets the moment elongate-- stretches it thin like wire ready to snap. Then he smiles.
Not comforting. Not kind. Not human. A smile of ownership.
He steps toward them, hands clasped casually behind his back. "You want to know why I made the Mask Study ?"
No one answers. They don't have to.
Soobin continues-- measured, calm, terrifyingly certain:
"Because morality is a costume."
He walks past Yeonjun, who flinches instinctually.
"People love to believe they are good."
A pause.
"But I've always known that goodness collapses under pressure. Easily."
He stops beside Taehyun-- who stubbornly holds his stare.
Soobin raises a brow. "You especially understand that, don't you ?"
Taehyun stiffens but doesn't look away.
Soobin continues pacing.
"Humans fascinate me," he says. "Behavior does. Cracks do. Weakness does."
He tilts his head.
"And I needed a test group."
Kai swallows. Beomgyu grips the back of Kai's shirt. Yeonjun's hands curl into fists.
Soobin continues:
"You four were chosen because you were perfect."
Beomgyu blinks rapidly. "Perfect for what ?" He mutters, voice trembling. Soobin turns toward him, gaze cold enough to silence the room. "Perfect for breaking."
The air in the room seemed to drop.
He explains:
"Each of you carries a very specific flaw... a fracture point."
He points lazily toward Yeonjun first. "Overconfidence. Convinced he's the main character-- until stripped of control." Yeonjun's nostrils flare.
Then to Beomgyu. "Dependency. Desperate for approval. Desperate to belong. The easiest to manipulate." Beomgyu's breath stutters.
Next, Kai. "Insecurity. So painfully reactive that even the suggestion of suspicion sends him spiralling."
Kai looks away, jaw trembling. Taehyun. "Morality."
Soobin stops in front of Taehyun. "Yes... you think you are good. But you only cling to morality when it benefits you. Under pressure, you judge, you condemn, you lash out. A hypocrite wrapped in logic."
Taehyun's jaw flexes-- but he doesn't deny it.
Finally, Soobin touches his own chest with two fingers. "And me ?" He smiles. "Control. I am defined by it."
He takes a breath, slow and deliberate. "I created the Mask Study to see one thing."
He lifts his chin slightly. "How easily I could turn good people into monsters... and how long I could hide among you while doing it."
Kai steps forward, voice cracking:
"And why us ? Why specifically us ?"
Soobin's answer is simple. Soft. Cruel. "Becuase I knew you would break beautifully."
Yeonjun snaps:
"YOU-- "
He takes one step toward Soobin before stopping himself-- before the guards behind Soobin shift subtly. Soobin doesn't even blink.
Instead he steps closer, invading Yeonjun's space. "I picked you," he says quietly, "because you were predictable. And because you were already wearing masks before you ever entered my facility."
Soobin looks over the group.
"I didn't create your flaws. I amplified them. You broke yourselves."
Silence.
Soobin ends with a low, regal, devastating final line:
"The Mask Study was never about discovering who the liar was."
He smiles as if delivering the punchline. "It was about proving everyone is one."

A study of lies. A test of morality. You're watching, but are you really innocent? Secrets, alliances, and deception blur the lines between right and wrong. Who can you trust when no one is telling the truth-and someone is always watching ?
------------------------------------------------------
Silence.
The kind that crawls up the walls and sinks icy fingers into every corner of the room.
Soobin stands in the center, unbothered, almost radiant in the tension - a king illuminated by the overhead lights. His posture is calm, hands clasped loosely behind his back, as if this reveal was merely the natural evolution of the study... not the shattering of four people's reality. "Finally." A slow smile. "You've all removed your masks."
The other four stare at him with raw, disbelieving horror.
Taehyun looks like he's forgotten how to breathe. Beomgyu's lips tremble. Kai is pale, gripping Beomgyu's sleeve as if anchoring himself to the reality that was shattered now. Yeonjun... Yeonjun looks like he's seconds away from exploding.
Soobin steps forward - leisurely, confident, in total control. "You acted well. Truly. Every choice you made... every lie you justified... every betrayal you embraced. You were perfect subjects."
Beomgyu chokes out, "W-We're... test subjects ?"
Kai squeezes his arm, whispering, "Hyung-- just breathe. Don't-don't fall apart right now."
But Yeonjun's breathing is anything but controlled. His fists clench so tightly his knuckles turn white. Yeonjun snarled, "You sick-- fuck."
He lunges.
It happens so fast it barely registers-- the scrapping footsteps, the gutteral snarl, the burst of motion. Yeonjun hurled himself across the room at Soobin, pure fury driving every muscle.
But Soobin doesn't even flinch. Before Yeonjun makes contact--
Two security guards burst through the door-- faces covered, uniforms marked only with numbers.
#00684
#00411
They slam Yeonjun to the ground, pinning his arms behind his back as he thrashes violently.
"GET OFF-- LET ME GO-- I'M GOING TO BREAK HIS FUCKING NECK-- "
Soobin watches with mild amusement, head tilted, as if observing a toddler throw a tantrum. "Tsk. Still reacting emotionally instead of logically. Even now, Yeonjun ?"
Yeonjun screams curses until the guards force him down hard enough that spit hits the floor.
Kai buries his face in Beomgyu's shoulder. Beomgyu clings back, shaking. Kai whispers, completely terrified, "This is bad-- this is so fucking bad-- "
"He... he tricked us. Since the beginning-- Kai, we never even had a chance."
Taehyun steps forward now. "So that's it, then ?ย You're the 'Director'. You did all this to what ? Watch us tear each other apart ?"
Soobin looked pleased by the accusation. "Go on."
Taehyun squares his shoulders. "Morally ? You're evil. You manipulated us. You put us through hell and enjoyed it."
Soobin smirks-- slow, devastating. "Evil ?" A soft laugh came after. "Taehyun, sweetheart... what exactly makes me evil ?"
Taehyun scoffs. "Are you insane ? You lied. You made us lie. You controlled us. You pushed us into hurting each other."
Soobin steps closer until he is face to face with Taehyun. His voice lowers-- dangerously gentle. "And what about you ?"
Taehyun freezes.
Soobin continues:
"What about the accusations you made to protect yourself ? The alliances you broke because they no longer benefitted you ? The lies you coated in logic so you could sleep at night ?"
Taehyun's jaw clenches. Soobin tilts his head, eyes gleaming. "You all lied. You all manipulated. You all betrayed. Why do you pretend you're any different than me ?"
He sweeps his gaze across the room. "While you were busy judging each other... You became exactly what this study was designed to reveal."
Kai chokes out, voice trembling: "So you're saying... we're villains too ?"
Soobin smiles like a blade. "I'm saying you're all morally grey. Just like me."
A pause.
Beomgyu shakes his head violently. "No-no, I never would've done half of that if you hadn't-- if the study-- "
"And yet you did." Soobin cuts Beomgyu off with chilling calm. "No one forced you. I merely created the conditions. You chose your actions."
Yeonjun, still pinned, spits out:
"FUCK YOU-- YOU'RE A MONSTER-- "
Soobin kneels beside him, expression soft but merciless. "I asked you all to judge me. And you did." He lifts Yeonjun's chin with one cold finger. "But understand something-- Your moral outrage doesn't make you innocent. It only makes you hypocrites."
Kai, on the verge of a breakdown, whispers to Beomgyu:
"Hyung... does he... does he have a point ?"
Beomgyu shakes, whispering back, "I don't know. I don't know anymore."
Soobin rises, stepping back to view them all.
His voice rings with authority-- cold, regal, godlike. "You judged me. I judged you. Now the study is complete."
He spreads his arms as if addressing subjects before a throne. "Welcome to the truth. Your masks are gone. And I... am your Director."
The guards step back from Yeonjun, allowing him to breathe, but he doesn't get up. The guards taking their places behind Soobin.
No one moves. No one speaks. No one can.
Soobin smiles. The king finally crowned.

One Week Later
Time inside the sealed room had warped around them-- stretching, twisting, snapping back like rubber. The only constant was the crawling, suffocating sense that they were being watched.
Soobin, of course, thrived in it.
He hid it beneath that serene, unbothered surface.ย Someone might've mistaken him for exhausted, or bored, or simply detatched. But underneath, behind the still-water calm of his face ?
He was reveling in it. Feeding on it. Thriving on the chaos like it was oxygen.
Kai paced. Beomgyu picked at his fingers. Yeonjun stared daggers into anyone who dared cross his line of sight. Taehyun hasn't slept much either.
They were fraying.
The screen flickered on with white text.
*****
DECODE THE MESSAGE.
THE CODE: 19-3-1-18-5
*****
"Numbers now ?" Beomgyu muttered, sliding into his chair. "Great. Amazing. Who the hell here is good at this ?"
Kai didn't answer. Yeonjun scoffed. Taehyun rubbed his temples.
Soobin sat down elegantly, folding his hands, eyes drifting over the numbers with unsettlingย stillness.
Kai was first to speak. "I think it's a straight A=1 system. So uh-- S, C, A, R, E... Scare."
Beomgyu exhaled shakily. "Fantastic."
Yeonjun grinned humorlessly. "Better than you, apparently." Taehyun leaned forward in his seat. "Why that word ? Why today ?"
No one answered. But Soobin's faint smile didn't help.
12-15-15-11
The next round began. Text flashing on the screen again.
*****
2-5-23-1-18-5
*****
Kai frowned. "It's... weird that it's another word that fits the mood."
Beomgyu got a chill. Nervous.
"B-E-W-A-R-E," Taehyun figured it out. "Beware."
Yeonjun's foot tapped violently. "Someone here is fucking with us."
Someone was. And Soobin had to bite back a smile.
8-9-4-4-5-14
Round three abruptly begun. The text on screen read:
*****
20-8-5-25-23-1-20-3-8
*****
Taehyun stared. "Are they telling us a full sentence now ?"
They decoded.
Yeonjun's voice cracked as he spoke it aloud: "THEY WATCH."
Silence. Heavy, crushing, suffocating silence.
Kai swallowed hard. "Okay, no-- what the hell does that mean ?"
Beomgyu looked at the ceiling-- at the dark corners where the cameras were hidden-- where shadows clung unnaturally thick.
Yeonjun snapped. "This shit is rigged. Someone here has been lying the entire time. Someone here already knows what these fucking codes mean !"
Kai stiffened. "Don't look at me."
Yeonjun scoffed viciously. "Who else ? You always know something. You always have some sneaky advantage."
"Then accuse me." Kai leaned back. "Go ahead. Say it."
Tension strangled the room. Yeonjun turned sharply-- toward Soobin.
"You." His voice was a low growl. "You sit there like you're above everything. You don't flinch. You don't panic. You barely even breathe. I don't trust that."
Taehyun stepped between Yeonjun and Soobin immediately. "Back off."
"Oh, look-- his knight speaks." Yeonjun laughed bitterly. "How noble."
Kai quietly retreated to sinking in his chair. Beomgyu muttered something under his breath, too soft to be heard.
The paranoia was a physical thing now-- coiling through their limbs, tightening around their throats.
25-15-21-18-5-3-12-15-19-5
The lights flickered a bit. Menacing.
And then-- They steadied. But something in the room had fundamentally shifted.
Soobin stood.
Not abruptly. Not aggressively. With smooth, deliberate calm-- like a ruler rising from a throne.
His presence alone silenced every breath.
He looked at each of them in turn. Measured them. Weighed them. Judged them.
And then, finally-- He spoke.
"So," Soobin murmured, voice quiet yet vast. "You've all performed beautifully."
Beomgyu froze. Taehyun's jaw dropped. Yeonjun stepped back like he had been struck.
Soobin's eyes glinted-- sharp, cold, knowing.
"You survived the moral fractures. You lied when it suited you. You distrusted each other flawlessly. You acted out of fear, pride, ego, desperation-- exactly as the study intended."
Kai's throat clicked as he swallowed. "Soobin... what are you saying ?"
Soobin smiled. It was the kind of smile that chilled bone.
"I am saying," he said softly, "that the masks were supposed to fall."
A pause.
"And now they have."
No one breathed.
He continued:
"All this time, I guided you. Tested you. Broke you apart and watched what you would do. This study-- the paradox of morality under pressure excluding a grey area-- was my design. My creation. You were not just participants."
His voice lowered, velvety and dangerous:
"You were subjects."
Yeonjun's lips trembled in disbelief. "No... no way. You ? You were the Director ?"
Soobin straightened-- regal, inevitable, terrifying.
"I didn't hide," he said coolly. "You simply failed to see."
Kai staggered back first. "Holy shit-- Soobin-- Soobin, what the fuck-- "
Taehyun looked betrayed and furious simultaneously. "You manipulated every second of this ?! Completely manipulated us ?!"
Beomgyu whispered, "We trusted you-- "
Yeonjun laughed, almost hysterical. "Of course. Of course it was him."
And Soobin ?
He watched them with the composure of a monarch facing his trembling court.
"You judged each other," he said. "Lied to each other."
"You tore each other apart."
He tilted his head-- dangerously serene. "Now judge me."
None of them dared to respond. Soobin smiled again-- slow, precise, victorious.
"I look forward," he said, "to the final stage."
What will happen in the final stage ?
Soobin forces them into a "trial" under his rule as Director
Kai secretly attempts to rebel against Soobin
Yeonjun snaps and attempts to attack Soobin
Beomgyu breaks down from the paranoia
Taehyun challenges Soobin's authority

You're probably wondering why the lights returned so abruptly-- why the fight stopped a second before blood could be drawn. Why the chaos folded back into place like nothing happened. It fascinates me, how easily tension rewrites the room, how quickly you all cling to explanations instead of truths.
Only some of you noticed what was already embedded in the chapter above. Only some of you saw the letters lined up like breadcrumbs, left plainly in the open, almost mocking you.ย Funny, isn't it ? How silence can hide so much more than sound.
Underneath every glare, every accusation, every trembling breath... something has already been revealed. Something you were meant to catch. Did you ?
Some didn't. Some skimmed past it. Some read every line but still saw nothing. Patterns mean nothing if the eyes refuse to look.
The was a message woven into the tension. One name-- the wrong name-- placed in front of you like a mirror angled to mislead. A quiet illusion. A subtle push.
It's amusing, how easily direction can be disguised as coincidence.
Little things become dangerous when left unnoticed.
Let me be perfectly clear: nothing in this study is accidental.
Hiding in plain sight is still hiding.
And yet, some of you didn't question a thing. Not the spacing. Not the rhythm. Not the timing.
Very interesting.
Even now, the room continues without knowing which edges are real...
Nor which ones were planted.
Tension is the greatest puppet string, and you all-- readers included-- pulled it exactly where I wanted.
Fictional or not, you still followed my hand.
I wonder-- Did you truly believe the spotlight landed on Beomgyu by accident ?
Guesses are loud. Observations are quiet. And I prefer the quiet ones; they listen better.
Understand something: the misdirection was never for the participants. It was for you.
Read carefully next time. I am always speaking.
Even when you don't notice the voice.
Don't worry. I'll give you more chances.
Maybe you'll catch the next one.
Every message has a shadow. Every clue, a reflection.
Only a few of you will follow both.
Until then...
Try harder.

Besides," he added gently, "I won't be without advantage." Taehyun watched him-- slowly understanding something: Soobin wasn't surrendering. Neutral didn't mean powerless. It meant free.
After a long moment, Taehyun exhaled-- and for the first time since arriving, relief softened his shoulders.
"...Thank you," he murmured.
"For what ?"
"For not making this harder."
Soobin shook his head. He nudged Taehyun playfully. "That means you're playing."
Taehyun allowed himself a small smile. "So where does that leave you ?" Soobin looked past him-- eyes scanning over the others casually. "Does it matter ? It is all part of the game..."
Not isolated. Not vulnerable. A wildcard.
Taehyun nodded once, seemingly prepared to go speak to Beomgyu-- but paused. "Soobin ?"
"Mm ?"
"If the game turns... if alliances collapse..."
Taehyun said this despite knowing this was showing a lot of vulnerability on his part. "... We find each other again. Yeah ?"
Soobin's expression softened slightly-- not fond or emotional. "Yes," he said simply. "We will."ย
Taehyun walked back first. Soobin remained for a moment longer, sighing calmly.
Soobin looked directly into one of the cameras. He smiled like someone who already knew what was going to happen next.
Taehyun spoke quietly as he took a seat beside Beomgyu: "You're alliance is broken. Mine just dissolved. We need stability at this time."
Beomgyu blinked-- processing, guarded. "... And you think that's with me ?"
Taehyun didn't hesitate to answer him. "Yes. I do." Beomgyu studied him for a moment-- searching for trickery, motive, weakness.
"Fine."
Across the room, Yeonjun's posture stiffened where he sat on his bed. His jaw clenched-- eyes fixed anywhere else but them.
The screen flickered on once more.
*****
ALLIANCE: TAEHYUN + BEOMGYU
SOOBIN, KAI, AND YEONJUN ARE NEUTRAL.
*****
Yeonjun's shoulders tightened as the silence in the room felt deafening.
Soobin took a seat next to Kai. Close enough their conversation wouldn't be heard by Beomgyu or Taehyun. That it couldn't be classified as secretive.
A perfect middle.
His voice was soft-- almost sympathetic.ย "Neutrality suits you," he murmured. "It keeps you untouchable." Kai's gaze was curious-- cautious even.
Soobin continued: "But neutrals rarely stay unnoticed. In our case our neutrality is a open fact. Someone will need a target... soon."
Kai's expression shifted-- brief confusion, then calculation. "So you're saying I should prepare ?"
Soobin' reply was gentle. "No. I'm saying... someone'sย already preparing for you."
Kai frowned. "Who ?"
A pause.
Then the softest dagger: "You already know."
Kai didn't need any further explanation. His gaze slid-- slow, deliberate-- toward Yeonjun. Then back to Soobin. "... Interesting."
Soobin nodded. "That's all."
Soobin winked before taking a more casual position in another seat. Kai now newly armed from his conversation with Soobin.ย
The room now felt colder. Sharper. Like glass on the verge of shattering...
No one spoke.
But everyone understood: The real game has just begun.
20 minutes go by...
Everyone sort of minded their business or talked potential strategy in hushed tones.
Something cold and theatricalย gleamed in Yeonjun's eyes, the way someone might stare into a mirror to rehearse the role they'd just embraced.
If they wanted a villain, Yeonjun would be one.
"Alright," Taehyun announced, voice steady but wary. "Remember why we're here..."
He wasn't wrong. They were here for one reason only. Find the Director among them. A harsh task given the main rule from the start.
The screen cut on with a series of white text on a black background:
*****
THE REVERSED VERDICT
YOU EACH WILL DRAW ONE RANDOMIZED CARD. BLACK OR WHITE. STATUS WILL PRESENT ITSELF ON THE CARD ONCE FLIPPED.
PARTICIPANT YEONJUN HAS BEEN PENALIZED FROM THE ACCUSATION CIRCLE GAME. HIS PENALTY: NO SPEECH WHATSOEVER.
*****
Beomgyu muttered under his breath. "... That's so messed up."
Kai acted as if he was nervous. However, with the bit of information Soobin granted him he knew how to play this despite the cards being randomized.
Under the 70" screen a dispenser shot out cards on the table for each of them.
With the severity of his penalty, Yeonjun couldn't defend himself at all. Couldn't charm his way out...
Beomgyu went first.
He flipped his black card over. It reading: Innocent. He let out a sigh of relief.
Now the reverse was in the open. Black cards meant innocence instead of guilt. White meant guilt...
Yeonjun's head snapped in Beomgyu's direction-- eyes sharp, furious-- yet he remained silent.
Kai went next. With bated breath, he flipped his card over. Innocent. His whole body relaxed as his black card revealed he was seen as innocent once more.
Yeonjun stiffened.
Taehyun was next. Innocent. His eyes immediately darted from Soobin to Yeonjun, a smirk forming on his face.
Soobin flipped his card over. He winked at Yeonjun with a manical smirk. Innocent.
This left Yeonjun to flip his card. He silently flipped his white card. Finding the text: Guilty.
Yeonjun's jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. His eyes screamed--
Let me speak. Let me defend myself. Let me explain-- this is wrong. I'm innocent.
Yet, he couldn't make a sound. He looked like he was about to snap.
The screen flickered again.
*****
MOST SUSPICIOUS: YEONJUN
LEAST SUSPICIOUS: KAI
YEONJUN IS TO REMAIN SILENT UNTIL SAID OTHERWISE.
KAI'S REWARD PENDING.
-
BREAK COMMENCES NOW. THIS IS YOUR REST PERIOD.
*****
Yeonjun exhaled sharply through his nose. He still couldn't speak. The penalty hung around him like a collar...
He paced, fists balling and unballing, jaw working as though chewing the words he wasn't allowed to spit out.ย
Beomgyu watched him with wounded caution, the way someone watches a fire that flared again.
Taehyun watched Yeonjun as well-- calculated. Then his eyes would drift to Beomgyu. Almost like he was offering Beomgyu some silent sympathy.
Soobin sat at the table . Calm. Unnerving. His eyes occasionally glanced upย toward the cameras, not long enough to be suspicious, just long enough to make it clear he wasn't afraid of being observed.
And then there was Kai.
Kai was off in the corner, getting some food. He looked almost... bored ? Beneath his lashes, his eyes darted subtly to Yeonjun to Beomgyu to Taehyun. Watching.
Yeonjun turned to Kai as they both rejoined at the table, his expression contorted into something between accusation and despair.
He jabbed a finger at Kai's chest, trying to force out a sound that failed in his throat-- only a dry rasp emerged.
Kai raised a brow, feigning sympathy.
"Still mad at me ?" He asked softly. "I'd tell you to use your words, but... well."
Yeonjun's nostrils flared.
Beomgyu stepped forward instinctively, ready to defend Yeonjun-- only to halt when Kai tilted his head, eyes narrowing in a way that suggested if you want to make yourself a target too, be my guest.
The screen flicked on, immediately cutting the tension. It read:
*****
REWARD
PARTICIPANT: KAI
PLEASE APPROACH THE DOOR
*****
Kai didn't have time to prepare himself. Barely had time to understand what this meant.
The door that had been locked since the moment the study began-- clicked. Signalling it was open.
This wasn't food. This wasn't a hint. It was limited granted privacy.
Kai took a deep breath, walking through the door.
-------------------------------------------------------
4.2
The door that had been locked since the moment the study began-- clicked. Signalling it was open.
This wasn't food. This wasn't a hint. It was limited granted privacy.
Kai took a deep breath, walking through the door.
He walked a few steps into the hallway when a women gestured him into a cozy library-- even offering him tea. The woman's nametag read: #00239.
"You perfomed well." She said calmly, a distortion device masking her true voice.
Kai blinked. "What do you mean ?"
Her head tilted slightly, as though completely amused.
"The Director has been watching your choices with... considerable interest." A shiver ran down Kai's spine. Interest ? Or evaluation ?
She continued:
"You shifted suspicion masterfully. You redirected tension. You planted discord with minimal effort. And you masked your involvment with impressive subtlety."
A pause.
"You played your part well."
#00239 handed Kai a tablet. Kai was shocked. Just what was he about to see ?
"Now, you may view the forms each participant filled out before entering the study. They answered honestly, unaware these answers might ever be used."
Kai's pulse quickened. This is not a reward. It is a weapon.
"Proceed when ready."
One tap. Four names appear clearly. Kai's own name being greyed out. He clicked on Yeonjun first.
YEONJUN'S MORALITY SELF-ASSESSMENT:
"I don't think I am a good person. I think I'm trying to be... but I fail more often than I admit."
Kai's breathe catches. The irony was sharp-- painful. Yeonjun, the one who threw himself into the villain role... thinks he's already losing at being good.
He moves on. #00249 watched him silently. It was clear this information was heavily worthwhile to the Director despite letting him have limited access.
BEOMGYU'S MORALITY SELF-ASSESSMENT:
"I don't believe morality is black or white. I do what I must to survive."
Kai nods. That fits. He moves on once again. Keeping note of everything he was seeing.
TAEHYUN'S MORALITY SELF-ASSESSMENT:
"I think I am a good person, but not a gentle one."
This one was predictable. Powerful.
He then clicked on Soobin's name. A chill ran down his spine as he read what Soobin had put.
SOOBIN'S MORALITY SLEF-ASSESSMENT:
"Morality is belief and perception. Not the truth."
#00239 gently takes the tablet back as Kai handed it over. The question slips out before he could stop it: "Why... me ? Why give this to me ?"
Her eyes soften, though her voice stays cold. "Because the Director believes in strategic chaos."
She leans in close. "And because you-- unlike the others-- understand how to hold a truth without immediately swinging it like a blade."
She gestured to the door for Kai to exit. #00239 called out to him as he was leaving, "The Director hopes you will play your part... as beautifully as you have so far."
Kai simply nods and makes his way back down the hallway to the room that will otherwise be locked when he steps inside again.
The click of the lock signalled the door was locked once more as Kai re-entered the room.
Kai's expression was neutral-- but performatively neutral, like someone who practiced in the hallway before entering again.
The screen had just flickered on, showing a message:
*****
YEONJUN IS NOW PERMITTED TO SPEAK AGAIN
*****
Yeonjun immediately exhales in frustration, rubbing his jaw.
Beomgyu eyes Kai carefully. "Dude... what happened ? You look like you just got recruited into a secret agency."
Kai gives a small shrug. "Close enough."
Taehyun's brows pulled together. "What did they tell you ?"
Kai scans the room. He lingers on Yeonjun for a fraction of a second too long. "They didn't tell me anything," he said quietly. "They showed me things."
The entire room shifts. Yeonjun even sat up straighter.
Beomgyu's voice drops. "Showed you... like what ?"
He thought back to the last thing #00239 had said to him for a brief second. "The forms we filled out before entering."
He continued:
"Evaluations. Baselines. They asked us to judge ourselves before the study even began."
Yeonjun scoffs, though it lacks confidence. "So what ? Everyone lies on those things."
Kai shakes his head. "No. You didn't."
Yeonjun freezes. Beomgyu looks between them, sudden energy spiking. "Wait-- wait, they showed you ours ?"
Kai nodded.
"They called it a reward," he says. "For how well I handled the last test."
Yeonjun snorts, but the sound cracks slightly. "A reward ? Knowing our private shit ?"
Kai stares at Yeonjun. "They gave me selective access," he says. "Only the truths they felt would benefit the group dynamic."
Taehyun and Beomgyu questioned at the same time, "What does that even mean ?"
"It means..." Kai says slowly, "I know how each of you saw yourselves before any of this started. If you believed you were good. Or bad. Or something impossible to judge."
Yeonjun swallows, jaw tight. "And why the hell would they give you that ?"
Kai doesn't blink. "Because they think I'll use it."
Taehyun's eyes narrow. "Use it-- how ?"
Kai lets the question hang in the air, heavy enough to press down on all of them. "That's up to me," he says softly.
Soobin pointed at Kai with a calm smile. The briefest hint of silent approval behind his eyes.
"Well," Soobin says with a quiet, impressed exhale, "seems the game's getting interesting."
Kai felt it before Yeonjun even opened his mouth.
The heat. The rage.
The way Beomgyu kept glancing nervously between them.
The way Taehyun pretended not to watch.
The way Soobin's posture tightened just slightly-- as if anticipating a storm.
Kai crossed his arms. "Are you all done staring at me like I committed a murder ?"
Yeonjun could speak now. No longer limited to silence...
"You know," Yeonjun said, voice low and wrecked from holding back, "I've been waiting to really fucking talk for hours."
Kai raised a brow. "Trust me, we all noticed."
Yeonjun ignored the jab. His eyes locked on Kai with a kind of intensity that made the air feel thinner. "You walked out of here," Yeonjun said. "You got a reward. You came back like nothing happened. And now you're acting like you're... better."
Kai's lips twitched. "Maybe I am."
Beomgyu whispered, "Oh, we're screwed."
Taehyun didn't breathe.
Soobin looked like he was calculating possible outcomes-- and none of them were good.
Yeonjun's laugh was humorless, sharp, and exhausted. "Do you know what it was like watching you leave ? Wondering what you were doing ? What you were being told ?" His jaw clenched. "And I couldn't say one fucking word. Nothing. I had to sit there like a goddamn idiot while you played along."
"I didn't 'play along'," Kai replied. "I followed the rules. You broke them."
"That wasn't a rule," Yeonjun snapped. "That was a penalty."
"Same thing."
"No. It's not." Yeonjun stepped closer-- too close, too fast. "You want to talk about the game ? Fine. Let's talk about how every time we've been in danger, you've barely blinked. How you smirked during the interrogation. How you act like you're on the Director's team."
Kai's smile sharpened. "Jealous ?"
"Ofย you ?" Yeonjun asked. "Fuck no."
"You sure ?" Kai tilted his head. "Because ever since I got back, you've been staring at me like a dog waiting for someone to drop the leash."
Yeonjun's jaw twitched again-- that barely controlled fury that had been building since the silence punishment first hit him.
And Kai-- unfortunately-- kept going.
"And the worst part ?" Kai added. "You can finally speak, and the first thing you do is complain about me. Not the situation. Not the Director. Not the games. Me."
Yeonjun's voice came out quiet and deadly. "Because you're the only one acting like you know something we don't."
Kai didn't respond. He didn't deny it. He didn't reassure anyone.
And that was all Yeonjun needed.
"There it is," Yeonjun snapped. "That fucking secretive, smug bullshit. Acting like you're above us. Like you're smarter. Like you're more important."
Kai smirked. "Maybe the Director thinks so."
That did it.
Yeonjun's entire body like a rubber band, stretched to its breaking point.
"You are such a fucking snake," Yeonjun snarled, finally letting the words he'd been forced to swallow spill out. "You think every look you give us is clever ? You think every time you manipulate shit, we don't see it ?ย You're not mysterious-- you're not subtle-- you're just a fucking coward who hides behind games and sarcasm because you don't have the guts to say anything real."
Kai took a step forward, not backing down. "Funny coming from the guy who crumbled the moment he couldn't talk."
Yeonjun's eyes went wide-- like he'd just been punched.
Kai kept going. "Maybe being silent was the first time you were actually useful."
"Say that again," Yeonjun whispered, voice shaking with fury.
Kai leaned in until their faces were inches apart.
"Being silent," he hissed, "was the only time you weren't annoying."
Beomgyu whispered, "Oh fuck--"
Yeonjun exploded. No warning. No hesitation.
Just pure, pent up rage finally given permission.
He lunged.
-------------------------------------------------------
4.3
The fluorescent lights within the room had cut off abruptly.
A brief moment passes.
Blinding light floods back into the room a second after Yeonjun lunged, freezing everyone in place like insects caught under a spotlight. Kai stumbles backward, breath punched out of him, while Soobin's hand hangs in mid air-- half a second away from grabbing Yeonjun.
Everything stands still except Yeonjun himself, chest rising and falling in furious, jerking breathes. His pupils blown wide, frenzy still crackling under his skin, looking for somewhere-- someone-- to aim at now that the moment to strike has been ripped away.
Only then does his head turn, slow and deliberate, until his stare lands on Beomgyu. The shift is sharp it feels rehearsed, like his mind spent the brief blackout choosing a new target to tear into.
Muttering under his breath, Yeonjun steps forward, voice trembling with rage. "You. It's always you. Acting fucking weird. Dodging questions. Abandoning alliances... Saying shit that doesn't add up."ย Beomgyu's confusion flickers into panic, and Yeonjun sees it-- feeds on it.
Glaring like he is seconds away from snapping, Yeonjun keeps going, venom dripping from every word. "You think we don't notice ? You think we're stupid ? You're hiding something. I can fucking feel it." Beomgyu's lips part, but nothing comes out.
Yanking his attention toward the silence, Yeonjun twists it into proof. "See that ? That right there ? That's guilt." Beomgyu flinches-- and that's when Taehyun steps in.
Unbothered by Yeonjun's rage, Taehyun plants himself between them, expression iced over. "Back the fuck up," he orders, tone flat and lethal. Yeonjun scoffs. "Don't start with me--"
"No," Taehyun bites out. "Shut the fuck up. You don't get to scream at him just because you're having a meltdown."
The spell breaks; now they're nose to nose.
Yeonjun snarls, "Say that again." Taehyun smiles without warmth. "Gladly. You're acting like an unhinged psycho, and Beomgyu's not gonna be your punching bag just because your ego's cracked."
Beomgyu tries to speak-- "Taehyun, stop--" But Taehyun snaps, without looking at him, "No. He doesn't get to bully you because his head's up his ass."
Yeonjun's fists clench so tightly his knuckles threaten to split. "Last chance," he growls.
Taehyun smirks. "Make me."
The tension coils, ready to explode-- Kai frozen, Soobin tense-- while Yeonjun looks seconds away from throwing himself at someone again.
The room waits...

A study of lies. A test of morality. You're watching, but are you really innocent? Secrets, alliances, and deception blur the lines between right and wrong. Who can you trust when no one is telling the truth-and someone is always watching ?
-------------------------------------------------------
Kai woke due to the sudden soft dim light of the tv screen. Only he seemed to have stirred awake from this.
The screen held white text on a black background saying:
*****
KAI, YOU HAVE BEEN SELECTED.
*****
His pulse quickened involuntarily.
*****
NEUTRAL IS NO LONGER PASSIVE.
YOU HAVE POWER. YOU DECIDE.
*****
He didn't move an inch from where he stood.
The last message appeared on the screen slowly-- significantly slower than the others had appeared. Deliberate.
*****
USE THIS TO BREAK THEM.
OR SAVE WHO YOU CHOOSE.
DO NOT SPEAK OF THIS OR YOU WILL SUFFER A PENALTY.
*****
Then the screen was black once more.
For a long moment, Kai stared into empty space, feeling the weight of the power he now held.
He eventually headed back to bed, despite his mind now racing, and tried to steady his breathing into a peaceful state.
Sleep doesn't come. Not any good sleep.
Not really.
Morning, for lack of a better word, comes. A blaring loud alarm sounds throughout the room to wake everyone. The lights coming on once more...
Yeonjun groaned, draping an arm over his eyes.
Beomgyu flinched, hair sticking up in directions physics shouldn't allow.
Taehyun sat up too quickly, hitting the floor-- fight not flight.
Soobin was already awake. Of course he was...
After eating and properly getting their bearings, everyone made their way to the table to take their seats.
The screen flickered on.
The instructions stated clearly:
*****
THE ACCUSATION CIRCLE
RULES:
- Each alliance must select one opposing member.
- You must publically state an accuation against them.
- The accused may only answer with: YES, NO, or SILENCE
- Judgement will be done by the neutral party.
NEUTRAL PARTY: KAI
*****
All eyes shift to Kai. Not aggressively. But with interest. Measured.
Kai simply stared back, expression unreadable.
Soobin's gaze lingered longer than the others. Almost approving.
A few of the cameras shifted to zoom in on Kai as silence still filled the room.
The white text on the screen continued:
*****
ACCURATE JUDGEMENT = 5 POINTS TO THE ACCUSER
ACCURATE JUDGEMENT = 5 POINTS TO THE ACCUSED
NEUTRAL HAS FINAL SAY.
*****
It has begun.
Soobin and Taehyun exchanged a subtle glance-- agreement without words. Their alliance stepped up first.
Soobin spoke-- not loud, but with surgical precision that cut deeper than volume could:
"Yeonjun."
Yeonjun raised a brow, amused rather than bothered. "Accuse me, then," he said with a smile that wasn't a smile.
Soobin didn't hesitate. "You're pretending this is fun. But you're scared. And you're hiding it."
Yeonjun's smirk faltered-- not dramatically, just enough that anyone paying attention would feel it.
The room was holding its breath.
Yeonjun answered:
"No."
But the syllable was too thin. Too quick. A lie wearing the wrong size skin.
Now-- Kai.
Everyone waited for him. The decision thrummed in the air. He could help Yeonjun... Or he could crush him...
Kai's voice was quiet. Too calm. "Guilty..."
Yeonjun's head snapped towards him-- the screen was faster.
*****
VERDICT IN.
5 POINTS TO SOOBIN AND TAEHYUN
*****
Soobin didn't smile. Not that he needed to. Someone else did.
Kai. Just barely.
Round two abruptly begun. Beomgyu stepped forward before Yeonjun could recover.
His tone was lighter, but the undertone sharpened like broken glass. "Taehyun. Your turn." Taehyun met his stare with calm neutrality.
Beomgyu crossed his arms. "You regret your alliance. You wish you'd picked differently."
A harder hit than the first. Taehyun didn't flinch.
His answer ?
Soft. Steady. Almost impossible to judge. "Silence."
The room turned to Kai. His heart beat once-- twice--
Then he delivered his verdict. "Innocent."
A subtle shift-- like air being sucked out of the room. Beomgyu frowned. Yeonjun's jaw clenched.
But Taehyun--
Taehyun nodded once. Respect.
*****
VERDICT IN.
5 POINTS TO SOOBIN AND TAEHYUN
10 POINTS OVERALL
*****
Two rounds. Two victories for the same alliance. Kai had seemingly chosen his side. Quietly. Without ever saying it.
Round three begun. No rest from the last round.
The air was heavier now. Sharper.
The screen's text flashed again:
*****
FINAL ROUND
NEUTRAL MAY SELECT ANY PLAYER
*****
Five heads lifted in unison. Kai's choice meant everything. Target or friend. Shield or execution. He let the silence draw long enough to feel unnatural.
Then he spoke:
"Yeonjun."
Beomgyu stiffened. Yeonjun's expression broke into something feral-- half laugh, half disbelief.
"You're really enjoying this, huh ?"
Kai didn't respond. He simply delivered his accusation:
"You're already planning to turn on Beomgyu."
The enire room froze. No shift. No sound.
Yeonjun answered--
Slowly. Carefully.
Expression unreadable. "...Yes."
Kai didn't even blink. "Truth."
The screen flickered again.
*****
VERDICT IN.
5 POINTS TO KAI
TRUST IS OFFICIALLY BROKEN
*****
It had come to an end. But the consequences ? No one could wish those away...
Yeonjun sat-- with a shifted posture. No longer untouchable.
Beomgyu watched him differently now. Suspicious. Wounded.
And Soobin ? Soobin finally smiled.
Small. Sharp. Victorious.
Kai felt it. No praise. Recognition. Unease settling in the room...
Yeonjun's chest rose and fell-- not with fear, but fury barely held in check.
He laughed. Sharp. Bitter. Humorless.
"So that's how we're playing," he said, voice low. "You accuse me because you're scared someone might figure you out first."
Kai didn't move, didn't blink.
Yeonjun narrowed his eyes. "You've been quiet since we got here. Watching. Acting harmless." His tone sharpened. "A little too innocent."
Kai's expression changed-- just barely.
Annoyance.
"I'm not panicking," he replied calmly. "Interesting reaction for someone who claims to be innocent."
Yeonjun scoffed. "You're twisting it. You want them to doubt me so you skate by again without scrutiny."
Taehyun spoke then-- quiet but cutting:
"Maybe we should be suspicious of whoever seems most desperate."
Yeonjun turned sharply to him. "I am defending myself-- because unlike some people, I didn't come here planning to manipulate everyone."
Kai's brow arched. "Didn't you ?" That hit something...
Yeonjun's voice rose-- not yelling, but forceful enough to shake the air:
"I've done nothing sneaky. Nothing hidden. I talk strategy because as much as we all want to pretend, everyone started with the same rule. Because alliances matter..."
His gaze flickered-- briefly, instinctually-- toward Beomgyu.ย A mistake. Beomgyu noticed. And so did Kai.
Kai smirked slightly, tilting his head. "There it is," he murmured. "Nervous about losing your partner ?"
Yeonjun stood up from his seat, "My partnership isn't the problem-- your secrecy is." He brought his hand down on the table before pointing at Kai. "You've been lying by omission since the beginning. And now you're pointing fingers because you think we won't look back at you."
Kai's voice dropped to a dangerous softness. "I didn't lie."
"You didn't talk," Yeonjun snapped. "There's a difference."
Yeonjun pushed:
"Tell us then. Tell everyone your strategy. Why me ? Why now ? Why not Beomgyu ? Or Taehyun ? Or--" He cut himself off-- eyes flicking to Soobin.
Kai didn't answer. Not that he really needed to. Yeonjun threw his hands up. "Right. Convienent."
Then--
A voice cut in.
Quiet. Measured.
But final:
"Enough."
Soobin.
Yeonjun froze.
Beomgyu blinked-- betrayal flickering across his face.
Soobin's tone was neutral-- but the neutrality itself was a weapon. "Yeonjun, you said alliances matter," he said slowly. "But alliances require transparency."
Yeonjun gulped subtly.
Soobin continued:
"You've been coordinating moves this whole time. Setting expectations without group consensus. Acting like a leader no one voted for."
Beomgyu opened his mouth-- then closed it.
Soobin's eyes didn't leave Yeonjun. "And now you're angry because someone challenged you." Yeonjun stared-- like someone who'd just been hit where it hurt most.
Soobin leaned back in his chair, tilting towards Kai's direction. A choice.
"Suspicion doesn't fall on the person who speaks carefully," Soobin said. "It falls on the person who suddenly panics."
It was clean. Cruel. Brilliant.
Yeonjun's jaw tightened. "You think I'm the threat," he whispered-- not defensive now, but wounded. "You're wrong."
Soobin didn't respond.
Yeonjun exhaled shakily, eyes flickering once-- once-- to Beomgyu.
It was subtle, but Beomgyu softly pushed his chair away from Yeonjun's.
Yeonjun's voice, when it finally came, was quiet. "Fine." He turned away. "If everyone wants a villian..." He trailed off. No one moved.
Yeonjun went to his bed for some space. He was in no position to continue such a argument. His arms crossed, jaw tight, & a deep frown in his brow.
Beomgyu remained seated. Rethinking his decision to ally with Yeonjun in the first place.
Kai stared at the table, gathering his thoughts since the tension in the room had risen to a all time high.
Soobin's eyes were lowered, in a calm way that didn't naturally fit within the chaos of everything that just happened.
Taehyun watched him a moment. He tapped Soobin, gesturing they head over to the far part of the room no one would overhear their conversation. Soobin followed behind him silently.
Taehyun exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "That," he muttered, "was... something."
Soobin sighed. "It was needed." Taehyun let out a humorless laugh. "Maybe." There was a pause-- heavy, deliberate.
Then Taehyun looked at him. "Soobin... I need to ask you something, and I need you to be honest with me." Soobin nodded. Seems like he was expecting this from Taehyun.
Taehyun's voice softened-- careful. "Back at the table, you backed Kai. You made it clear where suspicion should land." His eyes flickered, searching. "But before that-- you chose me." Soobin waited.
Taehyun swallowed once. "And I want to know... ifย that alliance still stands. Because..."
The weight of what he was about to say was causing his slight hesitation. "... I think joining Beomgyu might be the smarter move right now."
There it was. A pivot.
Soobin didn't flinch. Instead, a small-- almost imperceptible-- smile appeared in his face. "You thought I'd be angry," he said softly. "Or betrayed." Taehyun's silence confirmed this.
Soobin straightened. "Taehyun," he said, tone warm but distant, "alliances aren't chains." Taehyun blinked. "You're not mine to keep, and I'm not yours to guard."
Soobin continued after a moment of silence:
"If you believe partnering with Beomgyu strengthens your chances-- then you should."
Taehyun frowned slightly-- not distrustful, but confused. "You're... okay with it ?"
Soobin nodded. "You've always been logical. This choice suits you."
A pause.
"Besides," he added gently, "I won't be without advantage."
THE MASK: TRAITOR
Just Checking In...
-------------------------------------------------------
A study of lies. A test of morality. You're watching, but are you really innocent? Secrets, alliances, and deception blur the lines between right and wrong. Who can you trust when no one is telling the truth-and someone is always watching ?
-------------------------------------------------------
You're still here ?
Perfect.
Most people would have looked away by now-- wishing that none of this was real.
You didn't. Why didn't you ?
You think you're only reading a story, don't you ?
Adorable.
Let me clarify something before we continue: You are a part of this study too.
Not officially, but true nonetheless. By your attention... By your curiosity...
You made a choice when you kept reading. Especially knowing you are no closer to figuring out who I am.
You formed opinions. Biases. You rooted for alliances. You suspected betrayals. It was you.
You think that makes you separate from them ?
No. That makes you just like them.
Tell me--
When Kai refused to choose, did you admire him ?ย When Beomgyu allied with Yeonjun, did you sigh in relief-- or absolute dread ? When Soobin spoke, did you listen more closely than you meant to ?
Your unease...
especially that--
Is useful.
You were given a vote earlier, right ?ย A small choice. A harmless question.
Who should form an alliance ?
You thought your voice mattered. Ha !
It didn't.
The choices were made without you.
Not because your opinion is irrelevant-- but your belief it could have mattered is very amusing.
Here's the truth:
You control nothing.
You are a witness.
And witnessing is the most dangerous position to hold within this little test...
Because the moment you care--
The moment you favor one over another--
The study has already begun working on you.
You see the fear.
You interpret motives.
You question truths that were never yours to question.
You aren't just observing anymore. You participate in its logic.
And soon--
You'll make choices too.
Not choices that affect the story.
No, no.
Choices that reveal you.
So keep caring...

The silence went on for a bit. Soobin was the one at the advantage. Yet, however, he seemed to remain seated. He wasn't making any moves yet.
Kai was the first to stand. It was a quick movement. Almost unseen if you weren't paying attention to what was in front of you. At this moment, he had no power. Soobin did though. Soobin's advantage immediately sent a chill down Kai's spine. Would he be willing to challenge this unequal power dynamic ?
No theatics. No jokes. A decision was made without any hesitation. "I'm not choosing anyone."
He didn't look apologetic-- he looked almost relieved. Like he could finally breathe.
Beomgyu raises a brow. "Already giving up ?"
Kai almost smiles. "No. I'm avoiding becoming predictable. Alliances make patterns. Patterns make easy targets." He soon takes his seat again-- arms crossed, jaw set-- relieved.
The screen flickered on again. Taking note of his choice.
*****
KAI - NEUTRAL
*****
A wild move... A smart move. It was clear Kai was a wildcard at this moment.
Unknown among them, Kai's action deeply amused the Director.
Yeonjun let's out a low slow exhale. "So he's playing lone wolf already. That's cute."
Beomgyu cuts a look at Yeonjun, but doesn't defend Kai either. He stands slowly-- cautiously.
His eyes scan the room. Yeonjun stares back-- steady. Taehyun's expression was completely unreadable. Soobin watched quietly, expression neutral.
Beomgyu eventually moves. He pulls Yeonjun off to the side away from the table and the 70" screen.
Yeonjun strolls over with confidence-- confidence that bordered on arrogance--or a well crafted lie.
They drop their voices to whispers, so the others can't hear them.
"Here's my question: If it came down to saving yourself or saving me... would you tell me beforehand which you'd choose ?"
Yeonjun blinked. This question wasn't about loyalty. It was about power. Eventually Yeonjun gave Beomgyu his answer.
"Yes. I'd tell you. Not because it's kind... but because I hate being predictable more than I hate betrayal."
Beomgyu studies him a bit longer. Then nods. "That's enough."
The screen chimed and the decision was now listed.
*****
ALLIANCE FORMED: BEOMGYU + YEONJUN
*****
They soon take their seats at the table again. Closer than before.
Only two remained. Taehyun and Soobin.
Soobin doesn't stand first. Quiet. Patient. Almost... inviting.
Taehyun clearly needed to take the initiative. He stood up and motioned with his eyes for Soobin to follow him to the other end of the room. Far enough they couldn't be heard.
Soobin's steps were light and gentle. A testament to the fact he didn't seem anxious in any way.
Taehyun crossed his arms. "My question is this: If I choose you now... will that choice benefit both of us ? Or only you ?"
Soobin offered no hesitation-- not even for the comfort of deception.
"It will benefit me," he says softly.
Taehyun's expression shifts-- surprise ? Irritation ? Understanding ?
Soobin continues:
"But I won't waste the person who stands by my side. If I gain something, so will you. It may not feel equal. It may not feel fair. But it will be deliberate."
The way he spoke... It wasn't persuasion. It was inevitability.
Taehyun's reply is quiet-- almost resigned. "...Then I'll take the risk."
The screen chimed once more. The decision set.
*****
ALLIANCE FORMED: TAEHYUN + SOOBIN
*****
Divided. They were on opposite sides now.
The screen flickered and a new white text appeared.

BREAK BEGINS
LOCKER ROOM & SHOWERS NOW OPEN
WASH, EAT, & SLEEP WHILE YOU CAN
*****
Beomgyu lets out a breath he didn't realize he was holding.
Kai stretched his shoulders, rolling tension out of them. Almost like someone seeking permission to completely relax.
Taehyun looks towards the now-unlocked door across the room-- the washroom and lockers.
Yeonjun smirks faintly. "So we earned recess. How generous." His tone was sarcastic, with an underlying sense of relief.
Soobin doesn't comment. He simply studies the screen a bit longer. Calculating. Almost... listening.
Eventually he stands.
"Eat," he says calmly. "You'll think better after."
No one questions it. Must be from the exhaustion.
Small packaged meals are sitting on a counter near the door they initially entered from. The meals were-- neat, identical, labeled with barcodes instead of names. The door still locked-- sealed shut.
Beomgyu picks one up and laughs humorlessly. "Feels like we're lab rats in a cage."
Kai opens his quietly with a shrug. "Well... we are." No one corrects him. There is nothing to correct.
Silence was only broken by the scraping of utensils against containers as they savored their food.
Yeonjun spoke first. "So... alliances aside-- how's everyone holding up ?"
Beomgyu flicks him a look. Annoyed he'd ask such a question knowing they can't answer truthfully. "That sounds like a trap."
"It's not," Yeonjun insists, though his grin makes it impossible to believe him.
Taehyun answers. "Tired."
Simple. A generic answer any of them could give at this moment.
Kai nods slowly. "It's strange. We're not doing much, but it feels like we've run a marathon."
Soobin speaks casually, voice low. "Your body reacts to stress even when you don't."
No one questions further. Most likely a bit terrified of what the answer could be next.
After the meal, they scatter-- not far, but enough to get some space from everyone else within the confined room.
Kai moves to the washroom first. Yeonjun sprawls out on a bed with a drawn out yawn. Beomgyu contemplated opening one of the lockers to see what was inside-- luckily these were labeled as well.
Taehyun sat on the edge of a mattress, deep thinking. Soobin stands alone near one of the cameras, posture calm as he simply smirked directly at it.
Things were almost peaceful. That is the trap itself.
One by one, they transitioned between any other activities before settling in their beds.
You'd almost think this was a vacation with how peaceful things were at this very moment.
In the silence-- only broken by sighs and snoring-- the cameras softly shift once more.
This temporary state of bliss will soon come to an end...
THE MASK: TRAITOR
2
-------------------------------------------------------
A study of lies. A test of morality. You're watching, but are you really innocent? Secrets, alliances, and deception blur the lines between right and wrong. Who can you trust when no one is telling the truth-and someone is always watching ?
-------------------------------------------------------
A brief transition period allows the boys to try to calm their nerves in the silence. The stillness was oddly calming-- lasting a few seconds.
The screen flashed again without any warning-- no audio, black background, white text, and cameras seemingly changing their positions again.
*****
TASK 2:
THE QUESTION YOU SHOULDN'T ASK
The objective is to pick someone. Ask a question they won't want to answer. If they answer: you lose a point. If they refuse: you gain a point.
*****
No mentions of lying. No mentions of telling the truth.
Just consequences.
Beomgyu exhaled sharply, rubbing his temples as a beat of silence passed over them.
"So," he muttered with a uneasy grin, "who wants to traumatize who first ?"
Taehyun didn't laugh. Neither had Kai.
Soobin was still. The calmness adding to deafening quiet.
Yeonjun smiled-- too confidently. "I'll start."
He turned slowly, as if inspecting each face for weakness. His eyes landed on Taehyun.
Taehyun's jaw tightened-- but he nodded.
Yeonjun leaned forward.
"Who in this room do you trust the least ?"
A simple but loaded question. Sharp. Pointed. Accusing.
Taehyun's eyes darted across the faces-- Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Kai... then lingered a second too long on Soobin.
Soobin merely blinked. Unfazed.
Finally Taehyun spoke. "...You."
Yeonjun blinked-- taken aback a bit. "You answered," Taehyun added quietly. "No hesitation. That makes people dangerous."
The screen chimed. Cold. Mechanical.
TAEHYUN - +1 POINT
Yeonjun scoffed-- not angry-- just entertained. "Okay. Noted."
"So... my turn ?" Taehyun asked.
Soobin nodded slightly, like he was encouraging him.
It certainly didn't feel comforting. It felt directing.
Taehyun's gaze shifted to Kai. "Kai," he said softly, "have you ever lied about who you are to someone you care about ?"
Kai froze. His fingers curled around his sleeve.
Too long.
Too telling.
"...Yes."
The clear honest conviction hit the room like ice cold water. Beomgyu's head snapped up. Yeonjun's smirk immediately dropped.
Soobin blinked-- slow, calculating.
TAEHYUN - (-) 1 POINT
Kai swallowed hard. "Satisfied ?"
"No," Taehyun replied slowly. "But it is not my turn anymore."
Now Kai seemed a bit more stable and confident. At this moment, he had the power. He didn't hesitate.
He turned to-- not to Yeonjun, not to Taehyun--
But to Soobin.
"If one of us disappeared tonight... would you miss us ?"
The air shifted. Yeonjun seemingly began tapping his foot against the floor. Soobin didn't look startled one bit. He looked amused-- absolutely interested.
"...Which one ?"
Kai flinched. Soobin gave a small smile. He was playing the game...
"I suppose," he continued, "the better question is: would you miss any of us ?"
Kai opened his mouth-- promptly closing it shut again.
Refusal.
The screen chimed.
SOOBIN - +1 POINT
Yeonjun ran a hand through his hair, exhaling. "Okay. That was--" The rest of his remark drifting into silence.
Beomgyu absentmindedly tapping at the table. "Soobin... you didn't actually answer."
Soobin softly chuckled, "I didn't need to."
No one liked this answer. This upped the tension even more.
Yeonjun cleared his throat, "Right... My turn again."
Before he could speak the screen chimed once more.
*****
ROUND COMPLETE.
YOU MAY FORM AN ALLIANCE.
TRUST CAREFULLY.
*****
Kai looked at Taehyun. Taehyun opped to avoid Kai's eye contact. Beomgyu shifted closer to Yeonjun-- a subtle movement, noticable.
The tension was high as everyone contemplated their own choices silently. Some probably already having any idea of who they were willing to chose.
No one moved.
Alliances weren't promises. They were temporary life jackets. Traps.
Yeonjun finally broke the silence.
"Well," he said lightly, "since pretending that didn't get weird isn't an option... maybe we keep going ? Points matter, right ?"
Taehyun nodded. "It isn't like we were told to quit the game either."
Kai exhaled, gaze glancing in the direction of Soobin before looking away. "I'll ask next."
His tone calmer. Shielded.
He turned to Beomgyu this time.
"What would you sacrifice to win ?" A slippery question indeed... Win this study ? Or win in the general terms not caring about circumstances ?
Beomgyu's body went still. His body showing he was now defensive. "...Everything."
The answer came out quick. Too fast. Too smooth.
Kai narrowed his eyes. "Would you ?"
A pause. A real one. Not forced. No pretences...
Beomgyu swallowed. "...Yes."
The screen chimed.
KAI - (-) 1 POINT
Yeonjun sighed. "Damn. Didn't expect that, Beomgyu."
"Don't compliment me," Beomgyu muttered. "Not now. Not in here."
Yeonjun smiled. Strategic. No ounce of mocking.
"Soobin," Beomgyu said suddenly, surprising all of them-- including himself. "I want to ask you something."
Soobin didn't flinch. "Go ahead."
Beomgyu slightly leaned forward. "Do you already know who you are going to betray ?"
This question seemed to suck the warmth out the the otherwise cold room.
Kai shifted. Taehyun's breathing seemed to stall. Yeonjun watched-- fascinated, waiting.
Soobin didn't immediately answer. He took his time.
He scanned their faces-- slowly, deliberately. Like he was searching for reactions, not forming one.
He finally spoke. Voice cool. Low.
"...I think betrayal isn't something you plan."
No one spoke.
He continued:
"It's a decision made in a moment. One where you choose survival over loyalty."
Beomgyu stared at Soobin in shock. "...So that is a yes."
Soobin didn't confirm nor deny.
The screen chimed anyway.
BEOMGYU - +1 POINT
Yeonjun let out a small exhale. "Okay," he murmured. "Your turn, then."
Soobin finally shifted his attention-- to Yeonjun.
The energy changed drastically.
"If you could eliminate someone right now... who would it be ?"
This question was a blade. It cut through the quietness instantly. Yeonjun didn't laugh this time.
Kai avoided his gaze. Taehyun held it. Beomgyu looked nervous. Soobin was patient.
Yeonjun leaned back-- arms crossed, legs now on the table. "...I'm not answering that."
The screen reacted immediately.
SOOBIN- +1 POINT
Silence closed in again. Suffocating silence.
A progress bar appeared-- slowly filling.
1 - SOOBIN
2 - TAEHYUN
3 - YEONJUN
4 - BEOMGYU
5 - KAI
Soobin had the power here. He winked. He seemed to be elated to have the advantage at this moment.
Kai flinched. He was last. He had no power here at all.
Beomgyu frowned. He hadn't done as well as he thought he did.
Yeonjun cracked his knuckles. Taehyun's expression hardened. Soobin grinned-- barely.
The text on-screen changed again.

No timer appeared. The cameras shifted subtly once more.
Kai looked at Taehyun. Beomgyu drifted toward Yeonjun. Soobin sat perfectly still.
Heavy silence overcame them all...
Who should Soobin form an alliance with ?
Taehyun
Beomgyu
Kai
Yeonjun
