So I’ve been rewatching the sword route and It kinda has me thinking about something.. chapter 5 WR spoilers and predictions below (also this gets long :P)
We have been drawing the connections between it and the weird route since chapter’s 3&4 came out and with good reason.
But the way chapter 5’s weird route played out has me thinking that… the weird route might be…more broken? Than we thought??
Cause up until chapter 5 and a bit of 4. the parallels the sword route was drawing between it and the weird route were pretty clear and it seemed like we were following roughly the same events in order.
✅kill enemies to get stronger
✅ recruit the white cloak (Noelle) and use ice magic to make our way through all the rest of the enemies. Including a blue bird.
And assumedly our next step would be get the shelter key by following Noelle….
But that’s not what happens…
We follow Noelle yes but… she doesn’t lead us to a shelter key or anything… hell we end up missing the shelter key/code we were gonna get this chapter….instead she leads us to the lake and we allow her to force us to enter the lake and effectively skip two chapters.
And like I said that’s not even the only deviation..
We kill enemies to get stronger
We use the ice key to get to white cloak
We follow the white cloak and use the ice key to get the shelter key which uses up both it and the white cloak
And then we kill our friends, more enemies, and use the shelter key to get into the shelter…
Assumedly the ice key is meant be access to Noelle’s house or at least Dess’s room and/or the holidays shelter key. (Could be both since we do use it twice to get the shelter key in the SR)
But either way according to the sword route we’re supposed to use Noelle to get the shelter key…..and then discard her.
We re-equip the thorn ring onto Noelle and.. Thats pretty much it.
we don’t even get a chance to go into Dess’s room, we leave without the holidays shelter key.. and in the next chapter we chapter skip with Noelle, missing out on it.
Now, presumably chapter 6 in the normal route is going to have us, recruit Noelle into our group and then she’s eventually going to allow us to obtain the holiday’s shelter key…..
But if that’s the case, then what’s the point of having so many parallels to weird route in the sword route?
Well my theory right now is that the aborted weird route in chapter 5 is closer to the intended “forbidden path”.. while the weird route as we know it is what happens when we allow Noelle to break the game and follow us into deltarune’s forbidden path past chapter 6.
It’s like taking deciding to go down the evil path in an rpg and then taking an NPC that’s supposed to leave the party or die at some point in the story, skipping the part where they die/leave and glitching them into a part of the game they’re not supposed to be in.
Because by aborting the weird route in chapter 5, we end up avoiding the outcome where Noelle has us skip chapter 6 where I believe the “follow the white cloak” section is meant to take place.
In essence we’d be basically doing the “bad path”, the “right way” by preventing the lake scene from playing out fully.
Now, what does that mean for Noelle in chapter 6’s “forbidden path?” Well….. I uh…
..yeah, I’m gonna keep it a buck Ya’ll, I think Noelle‘s pretty much screwed in anything outside of the normal route..
Like it’s not guaranteed that she’s gonna get killed or.. kill herself per say but I don’t really like her chances…
one way or another I don’t think she’s going follow us into chapter 7’s forbidden path outside of the weird route.
Which would actually make aborted weird route even more fucked up than it already was. We’re already putting Noelle in a terrible mental state and on a path that’ll lead to her getting left behind, but also we’re stopping her from potentially killing herself and Kris, which should be a good thing….except we’re basically only doing it so we can get something out of her and then discard her later…. It’s really fucked up and gross and cruel in a lot of ways.. like telling her “you only get to leave this story on my terms and only once you’ve served your purpose in it.” It’s uncomfortable it’s
Gross and it’s the kind of twisted cruelty that feels particularly abusive and controlling. Which ya know given the route thus far… makes a lot more thematic sense than just letting….Noelle take the wheel so to speak.
That aside though, it would also make the weird route an even more fascinating route in the grand scheme..
The idea that the characters have managed to do something so out the realms of even the intended “bad route’s” parameters that they break out of the route and into something new.. and strange…
I don’t really see that sort of thing worked into stories often and I kinda find the meta side of Deltarunes story fascinating (if not a bit hard to keep up with for my wee little brain)
I don’t think I need to tell you that breaking a game can come with pretty dire consequences… I mean going into an area with a whole 2 chapter’s worth of equipment, only 2 party members and having to fight even stronger enemies with just what we can find along the way….missing out on key items that’d likely make getting to our ultimate destination easier.. honestly it might end up making it a Herculean task to progress down this route at all.
That’s not even accounting for how the game might punish you and the characters for going through with this chapter skip to begin with.
Sure, you probably escaped some of what the forbidden path was going to make you go through, but who’s to say that treading around in areas you’re not even supposed to be in won’t piss off the powers that be and put you through even worse hells…
After all games have a reputation of being pretty…hostile to players who break the rules a little.. too hard..
Anyway all that to say this is all speculation based on inconsistencies between the Zelda spoof and the “torture your childhood friend route” that I mostly just needed to get out of my brain, but if tricky Tony actually made the only way to get normal bad route of Deltarune require you to arbitrarily stop a worse route midway through so that you can avoid skipping TWO WHOLE ASS CHAPTERS OF A 7 CHAPTER GAME, I’m gonna fucking lose it. Like the audacity of that lmao.
