@aquaticnixie
I already said fine.
I donât have a choice, do I?
âWell, you could always deny it...â
âBut it'd make me happy if you didn't.â
( The conversation has been going on for far longer than Juno likes, and she rolls her eyes at Nixieâs words. ) Uh huh, I sincerely doubt thereâs anything you could do to âmake upâ for it, unless you were to go around the whole entire world and convince everyone that mermaids and sirens arenât interchangeable. But even if you could do that, it wouldnât matter. Iâd still hate mermaids.
â  It seemed hopeless with the others reaction, and Nixie knew that she wasn't going to win this over today. Those last words that were spat out with venom made the mermaid's heart ache, knowing that they wouldn't be taken back easily. Even as her expression stayed crestfallen, she knew this wasn't the end. Maybe one day, it'll be alright, but there wasn't more she could do or say. She felt like it would be stupid to repeat herself, but she couldn't help it.
âI'm sorry...â
âI guess I'll leave you alone now.â
That actually sounds really pretty. I can understand why youâd miss it. Itâs your home; and no matter where you go, nothing will change that⊠Itâs like me and the mountains.
âIt was, I always snuck up to stare at the sky at night, but mountains... This is the first time I've been so close and on one. It's so beautiful, I love it. But if you ever get the chance, you should go see the ocean!â
I guess that makes sense⊠Whatâs the ocean like? Iâve never seen one before.
âIt's cold and wet, but the sunset and sky over the water is beautiful. The fish are lively and swimming out in the middle of nowhere is definitely different than just walking around here... Sometimes, I miss it.â
Wow, you must not get out much.
âWell, when you're not allowed to be too close to the surface or too deep under, you kind of don't.â
Dancing I can do. Sort of. Depends what kind.
âOooh. What kind can you do?â
I -
Fine. Fine. Whatever.
âReally?â
Okay, you still havenât told me what you are! Like, coral collection? What are youuuu?
âOh, oops.â
âWhat about if you guess it! It shouldn't be too hard.â
On what?
âOn getting to meet so many interesting people and seeing places like this!â
No, what makes me mad is having my entire species practically wiped off of the slates of historical mythology because of some stupid linguistic mix-up, and your species have basked in that for millennia! ( Juno pauses abruptly. Now that itâs all been said aloud, she realizes her decision to begrudge an entire species due to a linguistic misnomer was perhaps a slightly ambitious and ill-made plan. It wasnât really the mermaids fault that their names got mixed up, was it? No, but surely it was their fault for not making sure the first few naming mistakes were corrected? She flicks her hair off her shoulder in annoyance. ) Iâm sorry. Itâs just frustrating to have suffered such an injustice for so long and yet not be able to do a thing about it because every one you correct doesnât believe you. ( But she can still dislike the mermaid ⊠right? Even if theyâd probably get along really well if Nixie was any other species. )
â  Wincing at Juno's words, partially from the volume and also the words, Nixie's face fell as she knew that the others feelings were strong. She had high hopes, enjoying how they had talked so easily, but that had changed it once their species was revealed. She never expected this to happen; that her being would be a hassle, but she tried to keep her composure. She couldn't give up, especially since Juno was mad about all mermaids - it wasn't about just her.
âI never realized how frustrating that must've been for you. I know it'd be kinda... hard to make up for it, but I'd do anything.â
Well, I guess you could try that.
â...Okay, so no rapping... But what about dancing?â
âSee, Iâm just trying to help.â
âThatâs what friends do, right?âÂ
I wouldnât know.
âWell, we're friends now so that's what they do!â
Do you need help with your bags or anything?
âWell, I don't have a lot of things so it's okay! Now, if I had my coral collection, then I'd need help.â
Iâm a siren. Do you know how sick I am of hearing that sirens are basically cannibalistic mermaids? Itâs infuriating.Â
âReally? I had a feeling but -- I know we mixed up a lot... I can only imagine how mad you'd be to be called that...â
Makes sense.
âYep, but they're missing out!â
We all get asked that a lot. I think what people are really trying to say is âare you going to try to kill me or not?â
âThat's very true!â
âSometimes, I forget that people have mermaids mixed up with other things.â
