My favourites of the Lewis chessmen pieces, a set (or, technically, multiple incomplete sets) of 12th century ivory chess pieces. Though they were found on Scotland's Isle of Lewis in 1831, they were probably carved in Norway, and are largely made from walrus ivory. Look at their faces! What funky little guys!

For a long time, I thought Honeysuckle was a pattern by William Morris himself. Not so! Nowadays, one of my favourite Morris & Co designs is more commonly attributed to his daughter and fellow textile artist, May Morris.

Thinking about it, Honeysuckle does have quite a different feel to Morris the elder's designs - it feels much lighter than patterns like Strawberry Thief, perhaps because it focuses on one subject rather than depicting a whole 'scene'? Or maybe the size and contrast of the honeysuckle flowers grounds the piece visually, offering somewhere nice to stop and rest your eyes. Who's to say? I'm no artist.
