Me giving an offering to an ancient deity at three in the morning
Masks & symbolism: Yomo
Masks are a very big thing in Tokyo Ghoul. I think they represent the character of the one wearing it. I want to discuss the symbolism behind it all, starting with Yomoās mask: the raven.
(chapter 27)
As stated by Uta, the maskmaker himself, it is supposed to resemble a raven. The most common association with the raven is death. This comes from the fact that the birds arenāt picky eaters, so theyāll eat any meat. On battlefields, they often circledĀ around the dead bodies, waiting to dig in. Yomo is quite literally associated with death, as part of his job at Anteiku was to collect suicide victims for meat. And, being a ghoul, he also ate them.
Because ravens interact with the dead souls, not long after they passed away, many cultures believe that the knowledge of the dead is passed on to the ravens. Therefore, another association is intellegence. Iād like to say this fits Yomo, but I havenāt found anything in particular pointing to that.Ā I donāt doubt that heās a smart guy, but I think there are other associations that fit him better. Continuing with ravens being close to the dead and gaining their intellegence, the raven also becomes the keeper of secrets. Heās supposed to keep and protect the knowledge heās gained. YomoĀ is very good at keeping secrets, mainly because he barely speaks at all. Even Kaneki gets angry when he wonāt tell him why he took Rize and why he canāt see her. (chapterĀ 115)
On to the next association Iād like to talk about. The messenger. In some cultures, the raven is the messenger, and therefore the right hand, of gods. This is true for Yomo as well. Heās basically the right hand of Yoshimura. Although the latter is hardly equal to a god, the idea is there. He does a lot for him, and is always by his side.Ā
There is one other thing Iād like to mention. Out of all the symbolic meanings of the raven Iāve read about, thereās one thing that stands out. Ravens were white at first but turned black after either being punished or experiencing great grief. Yomo did lose his sister at a young age, by the hands of the doves. This relates to grief, but also a bit to punishment. Itās nothing against Yomo or his sister personally, however, the doves are punishing ghouls overall. Just because they are, well, alive.Ā
This is the symbolic meaning behind the mask of Yomo, I hope you enjoyed it! Iāll be scavenging, like a raven for meat, for more symbolic meanings behind the meaning of the masks in Tokyo Ghoul as time passes!ć( ^.^)ć
Ok but the subplot where Aragorn becomes the protagonist of a Horse Girl Movie⢠is one of my FAVORITE things to come out of the Two Towers.Ā
In the stables of Rohan, there is an unruly horse named Brego. This horse is so wild that even the horse-masters of Rohan canāt tame him. Heās just a lost cause, they say. āThereās nothing you can doā leave him,ā they say.
BUT THEN ARAGORN COMES IN. And like the heroine of a Horse Movie⢠heās all:Ā āYou just donāt UNDERSTAND the horse! The horse is wild and rebellious and freeā like me!āĀ
Aragorn begins gently talking to the horse, first in Rohirric, then in Elvish. He calms him down and asks him whatās wrong.
You could easily draw a parallel between Aragorn and Bregoās ārebelliousness.āĀ To Theoden, Aragorn was acting overly unruly and difficult.Ā Ā āWhen last I looked, Theoden, not Aragorn, was King of Rohan.āĀ Then Brego acts unruly and difficult ā and Aragornās like āthe people of Rohan just donāt understand you!!!!!!ā
And then Eowyn explains that Brego used to belong to Theodred.
Suddenly Bregoās unruliness IS completely understandableā his master was killed in battle.Ā Heās a horse with a Tragic Backstory.
āYour name is kingly,ā Aragorn tells the horse.Ā Aragorn is also a king. Aragorn is projecting.Ā
Now that sheās explained the horseās tragic backstory, Eowyn tries to get Aragorn to open up about his own Tragic Backstoryā¢. (āI have heard of the magic of elves, but I did not look for it in a Ranger from the northā¦.?ā) She fails. Aragorn is briefly likeĀ āyup I was raised by elves,ā does not elaborate, and then peaces out.
But as he leaves Aragorn dramatically says: āturn this fellow free; he has seen enough of war.āĀ Ā
And Eowyn is forced to wonder whether Aragorn is talking about the horseā¦.or about himselfā¦.
Then Aragorn has a Near-Death-Experience, but Arwenās elven-magic (just roll with it)Ā saves him. And the horse who comes to carry him to safety is none other than Brego.
Itās Brego, repaying the kindness and understanding Aragorn showed him earlier in the film!Ā
Ā Aragorn set Brego free, and in return Brego saves Aragornās life!
Ā Because they UNDERSTAND each other, as fellow free spirits who āhave seen too much of war.āĀ Ā Both of them are KINGLY but also WILD, theyāve lived through too much and lost people they cared about, and their strong wills cannot be tamed by anyone in Rohan!
Ā Itās beautiful. Aragorn canonically has Disney-Princess-level animal friendship powers.Ā
When they arrive at Helmās Deep, Aragorn smiles and earnestly says in Elvish:Ā āthank you Brego, my friend.ā And we know that Brego understandsā¦.
Literally every time I watch this subplot I think of that one tumblr post on the plot of Every Horse Movie

So, do you recognize any of these men? I was hiding in the bathroom stall, so I didnāt see his face. But I heard him. He was singing along to the music at the bar. Do you remember what he was singing? I think it was that song, āI Want It That Way.ā Backstreet Boys.

ive been buying more stuff on bandcamp because it supports indie artists way more than spotify
reminder to buy on bandcamp fridays!
these specific friday events (that do not happen every friday, it varies)?
artists get 100% of what you pay for their work. On bandcamp friday all proceeds go to the artist.
bandcamp fridays are usually the first friday of every month though right now there isnāt one until August 6th, 2021. though this Friday 6/18 theyāre giving all the money they usually take to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund
also Iād be remiss to not rudely stick my bandcamp on here under this info
and even if you donāt buy stuff on bandcamp fridays, bandcamp still pays artists 80-85%, whereas spotify only pays artists less than half a cent per stream.
so if you like listening to someoneās music on spotify, also support them on bandcamp if youāre able to!
