Arcane Ship Tournament

Here's the plan for the shipping tournament. The ships included are based on a combination of suggestions and ships I came across while compiling numbers from AO3. Seeding is based on number of fics that pop up when you search the ship on AO3, as of August 19.

As you can see there are different stages. The first few weeks are just ships with under 1000 fics. Then once it's whittled down to two, Zaundads (1831 fics) and Meljay (1695 fics) get added in. Then the winner from that gets to be the fourth seed in the showdown between Timebomb (5230), Caitvi (17422), and Jayvik (17424).

I arranged it this way so that the biggest ships wouldn't just dominate the entire time, and voters won't get tired of campaigning for their main ship.

What are we voting on? Whatever criteria you want! We're picking a ship.

Propaganda is highly encouraged! Written propaganda, gifs, fanart, even fanfic! Why do you love your ships? I will reblog all propaganda as long as it's safe for work (I do check this blog when I'm out and about). Please credit fanart. Also, I prefer not to reblog repeats, so please add your propaganda to the OP rather than underneath someone else's propaganda if you want to be reblogged here.

When it comes to conduct, I do not hesitate to use the block button. I implore participants to keep everything in the spirit of fun. I know some level of discourse is inevitable, but please keep everything friendly. Talk shit about ships, but not shippers. Do not be mean to fans.

I don't necessarily know all the ship names. If I could be tagging polls better let me know!

If you think I could be using better art to represent your ship, send me an alternative, if I agree I'll switch it.

My opinion on "problematic" ships is that we live in glass houses. (more thoughts here)

Reblogs in a chain now get their own notes

The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve. 

Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, you’ll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.

If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.

Past notes will stay on the original post — we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.

This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out – stay tuned!

Rose Quartz did many problematic things that are understandable, regardless of how good or bad they are, including:

Accidentally hurting pink pearl after lashing out in anger with her powers.

Abandoned Spinel in a garden before becoming leading colonizer of planet Earth.

Continues to disguise herself as a Rose Quartz in order to form a gem community to rebel against herself colonizing Earth.

Refused Bismuth’s plan and invention to shatter the Diamonds and poofed her and then hid her gem away.

Elaborately lied and hid her identity as Rose Quartz to the Diamonds.

Elaborately lied and hid her identity as Pink Diamond from the Crystal Gems.

Faked her death as Pink Diamond in order for the Diamonds to stop fighting the Crystal Gems and leave Earth alone.

Continued to keep aspects of her life secret from the Crystal Gems (ex: Lion).

Why do you like them?

❗️SPOILERS FOR SEASON 5❗️

Because Rose Quartz one of the most nuanced and complex characters within the series.

She grew the temperamental child from a toxic/abusive family in Season 5 who abandoned Spinel and viewed her as a toy — to the mature, kind and empathetic gem who viewed all gems as individuals, loved every part of life on Earth and saved the entire planet we heard about in Season 1.

Also I’d like to mentioned that she lied about her identity as both Rose Quartz and Pink Diamond because the Diamonds refused Pink’s pleads for her to no longer colonizing planet Earth, so she felt like becoming Rose Quartz and forming the Crystal Gems was the only way to save planet Earth.

Also, the fact that she escaped and left her toxic family by forging a new identity and by creating her own community & found family, in order to help herself, others and put a good impact on the Earth by - well, literally saving it, really pulls on my heart strings. (Which also sounds rather queer-coded tbh).

Rose Quartz, people will NEVER make me hate you, no matter how many bad and problematic things you’ve done.

Free my girl. She did all of those things but her haters are so annoying I don’t caaaaare anymore.

Arcane Shipping Poll: Propaganda Highlight

The best thing about running tournaments, and why I do them really, is to see people explain why they love their favourite characters and ships. So here's a round-up of some outstanding propaganda and propagandists.

In the early rounds, @girlfailureinc contributed a lot of love to various rarepairs.

Although it was knocked out immediately, Melvik actually generated some of the most thoughtful meta, I'd recommend going through all the reblogs, but this one from @loveandlegacy was a stand out.

Meljay is a ship that often gets overshadowed, but @colorfulwastelandvoid wrote some really good propaganda on what a good match Jayce and Mel are for each other.

@angelinthefire wrote several post advocating for why Meljayvik should be a bigger deal, and they're all good, but this one had some especially insightful meta to it.

I wanna shout-out @fieldsofdreamlesssolitude who was a persistent advocate for jayvik, writing essays in the reblogs.

And finally, I think this contribution from @veritywordsworth was just a really sweet, personal statement on what jayvik means to her.

Those were just my faves, but thanks to everyone who contributed and made this tournament fun!

When I went to bed the poll was tied and had just hit 3000 votes. Over the next 8 hours caitvi fans fucking rallied and hustled. 1000 more votes in the poll, and Caitvi decisively pulled ahead. The flagship of Arcane is the winner!

A lot of great point have alredy been made about Jayvik, but I would also love to add how precious it is to me, as a disabled woman, to see Jayce’s love for Viktor, with his imperfection amd his real body, in spite of Piltover’s obsession for appearance. Jayce loves Viktor WITH his sick, disabled body, and not in spite of it, and that moved me to tears.

And it’s so great to see how many people are celebrating this disabled character as beautiful and desireable.

Their love, even if you see it as platonic, literally shaped time and space. They changed history because they could not live without each other.

And even before that, I could never resist two yearning scientists. They were soulmates from day one, meant to be.

Ultimately, I think both Jayvik and Caitvi were so important for queer fans, so which one wins doesn’t really matter, but I could not let this survey end without celebrating my beautiful disabled boys of progress.

Their love story is INSANE:

Jayce accepted Viktor unconditionally and called his imperfections beautiful.

Viktor created whole timelines to find the reality where Jayce survived.

Jayce paralleled Viktor's whole life when he crawled from the depths of the Undercity to the heights of Piltover in the hellscape.

Mage Viktor waited YEARS to see Jayce's face again.

Jayce brought Viktor back to life then was told to kill him for the sake of the world BY VIKTOR.

Viktor ascended to godhood with all power and STILL tried seducing persuading Jayce to join him (just assimilate him like the rest of 'em, Vik, if you're so "beyond emotions")

They saved each other from suicide.

They begin and end each other.

Their ending was the most majestic spectacle of animation, like, EVER.

Viktor told Jayce to leave, but Jayce would never, because he cannot live without Viktor.

Their sacrifice saved the world.

2. Their dream ROCKS:

Give Hextech to the people = give the means of production to the people. You wanna fight capitalism? Get these boys in your corner!

Broker peace by granting INDEPENDENCE to the Undercity = let's decolonize our world! Give power back to the people!!

Jayce got the talented politician and heart of gold and Viktor got the moral compass that will keep your cause accountable. Vote for our boys for president prime minister whatever-title-you-prefer to win this thing!

We need positive examples of people like Jayvik bringing change to our broken world!

Honestly I've NEVER seen any ship (mlm, wlw, het, enby) that's driven by a shared dream to improve the world that faces such realistic obstacles like ours (funding, politics, corrupt institutions) AND then do radical acts akin to decolonization and socialism.

The corporate heads don't want us interpreting Jayvik like this, because that's one more example to fight back against the greed and corruption of the 1%.

3. Jayvik rejuvenated so much fandom culture and artists everywhere

I've heard people say they hadn't felt this passionate for fandom since their middle school years.

I haven't seen a renaissance in art and artists like this EVER.

The art of their finale is perhaps the most stunning animation that I've ever laid eyes on.

Bonus: As an asexual lesbian, I will not let a certain head writer say that "Viktor is asexual" for the sole purpose of invalidating Jayvik as romantic (if you see Viktor that way, I approve, just not that writer and his motives). He doesn't understand asexuality at all. If Viktor were a girl, the scenes of Jayce leaving in the middle of the night to be by "her" side, giving "her" a blanket while they're both practically naked, and leaving the world behind to die with "her" in the astral plane would be seen as undeniably romantic by everyone. Jayvik would be canon, period, AND considered one of the most romantic storylines ever. What het ship embraces in the infinity of the Arcane?

So VOTE JAYVIK!! I truly believe they are a once-in-a-lifetime ship, up there with Kirk and Spock, Mulder and Scully, and Aziraphale and Crowley (just to name the big ones that I've seen the media for). I believe that Jayvik inspires us to reach for a better world and accept each other's imperfections as beautiful.

[At] the climax of the show, the greatest peril to life and peace in the narrative is resolved by these two men literally joining their bodies and souls together, and going into eternity holding one another for comfort and strength. They are quite literally soulmates, quite literally the most important people in one another's lives.

their relationship doesn't have to be "canon" to be meaningful. sure, they never boned on screen, but that doesn't detract from their connection at all; they're partners, in every way that matters. they lift each other up, they bring momentum to each other's lives when it feels like there's no way forward. they're two halves of a whole.

i also just personally like the themes of their story - sue me, i have a weakness for cute nerds and hopeless idealists. these guys are very special to me, as an aroace and a dumbass who despite all evidence to the contrary continues to believe the world can be better.
