Super general example: Person 1: I was hurt by what you did earlier, I’d appreciate it if that didn’t happen next time.

Person 2 *absolutely did that thing earlier and knows they did*: I never did that, you’re always making this up that’s why I don’t come over anymore

Person 1 starts to doubt themselves. Starts thinking things like: “did I make that up?” “I can over react sometimes…” “Maybe I remembered that wrong”

gaslighting also includes using what you love against you. if they know someone or something is important to you they slowly chip away at it

if you’re close with your friends or family they will try and find faults with them in order to isolate you from them. if you love your job they’ll belittle it or downplay your achievements. they’ll critique your sense of fashion, your taste in music, the shows you watch, etc. anything you value is used against you as source material for taunts and jabs at your expense

this manipulation tactic allows the abuser to make you question your foundation of who you are as a person as well as those you hold close. if the things you like are wrong and the people you hang out with are wrong then when you say something the abuser doesn’t like (including calling out their abuse) then you must be wrong too
