A few days after christmas in July, the newly installed Chief Commissioner, in the middle of trying to deal with the immense fallout of everything that happened with George Sanderson, gets word that Jack Robinson - aka, the man who uncovered all this, the man whose face is in all the papers - went up into the countryside and caught a murderer.

Why? He knows why. He doesn't need to read whatever excuse Robinson has cooked up to know that, one way or another, Phryne Fisher was involved.

And it's not as though he can do anything. Reprimand the force's current public face of integrity for solving a crime? Who knows what sort of carnage that could cause.

He'll deal with Robinson later, once the dust has settled. (That’s what he thinks, anyway).

Ok but the parallels of Phrack in Dead Man's Chest and Death on the Vine with the main difference being that they've gone through Blood at the Wheel and The Blood of Juana the Mad and decided they don't want to live life without each other

You know what actually no I have more to say than just the tags. 

In both episodes, Phryne finds herself outside of Melbourne with a murderer on the loose and an unhelpful policeman in her way. So she summons Jack, and he comes. Because of course he does. They solve the case, and end up back at Phryne’s for drinks. There are many similarities, but there are also differences.

In Dead Man’s Chest, they flirt. They flirt a fair bit. But it’s mostly just for fun. It’s silly and goofy because they’re obviously not an old married couple and they’re away from Melbourne so why not have a laugh.

But then Blood at the Wheel and The Blood of Juana the Mad happen and suddenly that fun flirting doesn’t quite work as well because they both know there’s something under and they’ve both, sort of, admitted to that.

And, when they get to Death on the Vine, there’s perhaps less flirting. But everything they say has so much more weight behind it. It’s openly sincere. And, while both episodes have fun in the end scene - jokes of pirates and adventuring vs Phryne’s wine - this episode also has a much more intimate tone as Phryne goes out of her way to make up for something that happened because she called Jack in. A gesture of apology and gratitude and affection all wrapped up in a hat. Of course they still have fun, but there’s a lot more in it all this time.

As an addition, both episodes feature some focus on alcohol. But Dead Man’s Chest is more about the dangers of alcohol. It’s about holding back and staying conservative; it even ends with a Temperance Union song. When Phryne and Jack drink, they are defying everything that tells them not to indulge. Then, in Death on the Vine, the alcohol is free flowing. Phryne even makes her own. Now, they are not defying those that tell them what they cannot do, but embracing everything that tells them they can do what they want. (I know this is a stretch but I don’t care)

So yeah I have a lot of thoughts about the comparison between those two episodes.

Sometimes fandoms take aspects of characters and exaggerate them to an unrealistic degree in fic, so it always amuses me to remember that fic!Jack's obsession with food - which is the sort of thing that could come across as just another example of that - isn't really an exaggeration at all

Jack, who has been using propriety as a shield all this time. Jack, who still insists on 'Miss Fisher' except when he genuinely can't help himself.

Maybe I've forgotten a scene, but could his first memory of traversing those stairs be coming down them?

Always amused by Hugh getting invited to Dot's birthday theatre trip and giving the extra ticket to his boss.

Like yes, Doylian-wise, it's so Jack can be there for the murder, but your boss, Hugh, really? I get that you know he likes theatre, but surely you have friends, mate.

(I genuinely kinda sweet, I love their dynamic)

Worst thing about them not getting together earlier in the show is that we missed out on the obvious and obligatory silly scene with mr Butler, Burt, and Cec exchanging betting money the first Morning After when Jack leaves Phryne’s house.

Mr Butler wins and Cec and Bert start debating whether he had access to too much insider information.

Dot scolds them for betting then, after a moment, also scolds Cec and Bert for their obviously incorrect bets.
