Archie may have been talking to her about Tommy, but Veronica had long ago lost most of her ability to truly concentrate. And it was completely the fault of all the alcohol in her system. It had absolutely nothing to do with his hand sliding down her arm and taking her hand in his. Nothing w h a t s o e v e r.
But as he took her hand and began to pull her away, a strange phenomenon seemed to take place and she found herself actually beginning to follow him. She only just realized what she was allowing herself to do (follow him) when he stopped, and as Archie’s gaze fixed over her head and behind her she let the reality of her situation and the implications of what she had been about to do flood through her.
She hated him so much. And she hated herself almost as much for the brief moment of insanity that had clearly taken over her. How dare he hold her hand, or touch her, or-
Or kiss her.
She had been so focused on berating herself for allowing Archie to touch her, she didn’t even hear what he was saying to her. But all of a sudden, his arm was wrapping around her, pulling her against his strong frame. A millisecond later, though everything seemed to be moving in slow motion, his other hand was brushing over the skin of her neck, somehow causing goosebumps to rise as his fingers tangled in her hair. And his lips, God, Ronnie couldn’t even begin comprehend what his lips were doing.
She stood there, absolutely frozen in his arms for what felt like an eternity (it was probably like 5 seconds). It was like her brain had completely stopped functioning and Ronnie was still trying to understand, to fathom what had happened to the world. For surely, if Archie Payne was actually kissing her -she still wasn’t entirely convinced this was actually happening, the world must have gone through some sort of cosmic shift or something.
But slowly, as her body decided it didn’t want to wait for her brain to catch up, Ronnie‘s frozen frame seemingly melted into him. She no longer had control of her actions as her arms moved to wrap around his neck, pulling herself closer to him. And as she reached up on her tip toes so she could kiss him back, she didn’t even realize just how much she was actually enjoying this.
God, how she hated this man.
Needless to say, after Archie’s (very very) brief initial realization that he had done something so unforgivable; so irreplaceable; so completely, twistedly wrong… well, the reaction after that one had also briefly, fleetingly been whether or not she was going to punch him or maybe turn into a succubus and rip his lips off his face and spit them back at him. She wasn’t kissing him back. Which, sure, you didn’t often start making out with people you supposedly – no, absolutely – hated on dancefloors of clubs just to ward off their ex-boyfriends. He caught her by surprise (he surprised himself for a second there, too), and at first it had almost been a little bit like kissing a dead fish. A dead fish with soft warm lips who tasted a little bit like tequila and maybe something coconut. But these thoughts didn’t last too long. He’d shut his eyes before plopping his lips down atop hers because if he was going to die he didn’t really want to see it happen, but as Veronica began to respond, her arms moving around his neck, her lips pursing to kiss him back before granting him the access that he didn’t even know he desired… All those alarms telling him that this was a Very Bad Thing Happening turned off, and for a split second, there was nothing but a moment of just… oh. Different from any feeling he’d ever had about Veronica Spitzke previously; maybe even different from any feeling he’d had ever. Sober Archie would blame that on that shot she made him take. Drunk Archie’s eyes opened in surprise as she pressed up against him, alleviating a little off his neck of having to hunch down to kiss the tiny shrimp in the first place, but – surprise of all the surprises – instead of actually looking to see if Tommy had caught their little PDA and moved on, Archie’s eyes fell shut and his arm tightened around her and he was actually kissing her. He was kissing Veronica Spitzke. Nope. Veronica might have let out a soft little gasp or maybe moved to say something but Archie had fully taken that opportunity to run after the taste of coconut and tequila with his tongue and now they were definitely full-on making out. And it was good. Drunk Archie was a liar and a traitor.
Clearly, they were in some sort of alternate universe. Because in the real world, there was no way Archie Payne would try to stick his tongue down her throat. And if hell had frozen over, the odds of her actually letting him do so would have increased significantly. So, obviously, the world was off-kilter somehow and as she found herself allowing and even relishing the feel, the taste of him, her fears were confirmed. She was not herself and the world was seriously messed up.
But right now, the alcohol - because that is what she had to believe it was - was making it really hard to care.
As he pulled her closer to him, Veronica felt her own grip on him tightening. She slid a hand down from around his neck to the front of his shirt where she curled her fist into it. Suddenly, she was struck with a strange and unfamiliar desire to tear the fabric off of him and grant herself better access to the muscles that she knew had to be underneath it.
She wanted more, and evil drunk Veronica was going to get it.
In the next moment the pulsing music seemed to increase its pace and as the bodies surrounding them seemed to move more wildly to keep up with the beat, Veronica found herself sliding her other hand down his arm till her fingers intertwined with his. She finally disentangled her lips from his and instantly she turned around and was pulling him through the sea of bodies, towards the nearest exit. Just as they reached the door, she turned around again and just before she threw herself on Archie, she saw Tommy out of the corner of her eyes staring them down. Her lips pulled upwards in a smirk as she pulled Archie to her and her lips hungrily came crashing down on his.
There were a mess of thoughts running through his head but none of them seemed to matter at the moment as their kisses grew deeper; more frantic as Veronica’s fingers wrapped tightly around his shirt, pulling him even closer still.
Which seemed to raise the question of just how close they could actually get.
If he were in his regular state of mind, this wouldn’t be happening. He would have pulled away by now, right? He didn’t know what had changed; what sort of sick joke liquor played on emotions, because as of the moment, his only rational thoughts seemed to be about locating somewhere maybe just a tad more secluded. He was either trapped in some sort of nightmare, or Veronica somehow seemed to sense his wordless need to do something; surprise of all surprises, seemed to even match his desire.
Sober Archie was going to be so fucked. Literally, if drunk Archie had anything to do with it.
His brows furrowed slightly as she pulled back, only to entwine her tiny fingers with his own, tugging him right along out of the crowd. There was a lot to be said about how easy it was for some 5 foot 4 inch angry brunette to pull at all six foot of him willingly through a crowd of people and then some, but Archie was just going to ignore that. Especially when, not a moment before they even walked through the exit door, Veronica was yanking him back down to her lips and he had practically growled before taking her hips in his hands, pushing her backwards through the doors and out to the sidewalk.
It was almost immediate that the atmosphere changed around them as soon as they left the darkened club and out into the humid summer night. And yet even as they stumbled into the heat, leaving the loud bass behind them, it didn't make him want to push her away. In fact, he turned and sloppily pushed her against the side of the brick surrounding the club, his hand slapping to catch himself against the building, practically sinking against her as his lips fought against her own. Hell, in a way, it was easier to think of whatever it was that they were doing as fighting. One minute Archie liked to think he had the upper hand, pushing her back against a wall, his hands drifting down her hips, back over the round curve of her ass, and the next, Veronica had his lower lips between her teeth, their gazes dark.
He detached from her lips only to drag his mouth down her jaw and reattach to her neck, his teeth nipping lightly at skin that tasted slightly floral and salty and Archie wanted more; more to taste, more to touch. Which may have led him to the worst sentence that he could have possibly ever uttered in his whole entire existence; so shameful, in fact, that even as his nose burrowed into the soft waves of her hair and attempted one last fight for control of the situation and failed miserably, he couldn't quite meet her eyes as he spoke.

veronicaspitzke:
Honestly, she really wasn’t sure why she let Archie have this kind of effect on her. Sure, Veronica had something of a reputation for having a short temper and also having the vocabulary of a sailor to boot, but usually she never stooped this low. Stomping on a dude’s foot? Was she 7 years old??
But as the brunette navigated, well more like danced her way through the crowd (clearly, the copious amounts of liquor she had just consumed was having its way with her) and she thought about the idiot she’d left behind, a heat that had nothing to do the crowded dance floor began to spread through her. He just… he just did things to her that she could’t explain and she hated it. Really, she hated it a whole stinking lot.
She’d managed to make her way to the very middle of the dance floor and was quite enjoying dancing by herself when someone pressed themselves up against her and the alcohol in her system wouldn’t let her do anything but dance along. Soon enough, she was dancing with him, probably leaning back into him just a little more than she should have been considering she didn’t even know the dude. But a second later, the guy behind her was gone and as Ronnie turned around to see just who was grabbing her waist, her eyes met Archie’s and she hated the fact that her body’s initial response to his hand on her w wasn’t to cringe away.
As he leaned in closer to her again, she rolled her eyes, preparing for him to say something snotty about how dancing with a complete stranger was pretty slutty. But instead he brought up Tommy and wasn’t actually being a total asshole and she leaned back just a little as if to get a better look at him and confirm that it really was Archibald Payne standing there with this hand on her waist, and not just the alcohol talking.
In the next instant someone from behind her was bumping into her and pushing her towards Archie and Ronnie was grabbing onto his arm, steadying herself against him. God, why did his biceps have to be so muscle-y? And as she looked up at him, she somehow found herself saying, “But if I don’t prove it to him… he wins.”
Archie found himself frowning at her words, not knowing if he should be surprised by them or not. In the years he'd known Veronica, almost everything was a challenge, and of course Archie could only play along because he was stubborn as hell. But the rest of the world? He could only imagine what it was like to be in a relationship with a woman who not only made everything into a bet but also one he knew would always win.
It was frustrating. But at the same time...
Archie shook his head down at her, his blue eyes narrowing before he leaned over once more. "You already let him practically handpick your career, you don't need to sign over everything else."
He didn't know when his other hand had fell to her waist (probably sometime around the time she stumbled forward against his chest); didn't really know when they had stopped dancing, but he was aware of his gaze falling back to hers, briefly aware of one of his hands moving the length of her forearm to find her hand, and then almost vividly aware of his hand wrapping around her tinier one, whether it be in alarm that this was something he definitely didn't need to be doing or the fact that he was, in fact, dancing with the devil.
"Come on," he spoke softer, wondering if she'd even be able to hear him over the loud thumping of the music. But considering their current state and just how close in proximity they were to one another, that might not have been much of an issue. "Can we g--"
Archie stopped short when he spotted the infamous ex-boyfriend himself dancing and weaving through the crowd with his blonde girlfriend in tow, his annoyance bristling all over again. Veronica might have been the queen of making bad bets, but despite the fact that Archie had very little to do with this one in particular, he couldn't help but feel a bit defensive. He was gonna go ahead and blame the liquor, not the fact that he was stubborn as hell and still slightly bruised at the dig at his hockey career.
His irritation only multiplied the closer they moved their direction, and before Archie could even really get a grip, the hand he had on her waist moved to wrap tightly around her instead; the hand he held in her own moving to her neck, getting tangled in her hair in the process. In his very last feeble attempt to gain any control of the escalation of the situation, Archie lamely blurted: "Don't hit me," right before his lips came colliding down atop of hers.

veronicaspitzke:
She watched as he seemingly argued with himself on whether or not to accept the challenge. It only took a few seconds, but as Ronnie watched, she saw the familiar Archie internal struggle play out across his face. She may have completely and utterly despised the asshole, but that didn’t mean that she hadn’t learned how to read him pretty well over the years. And as smooth as he liked to think he was, Archie was, in a lot of ways, an open book… if that book was meant for two year olds.
A smirk came to her lips as he predictably couldn’t resist her bet and knocked back the shot. Veronica didn’t know how much further ahead he was than her, but he was definitely feeling the alcohol, that was for sure. She threw hers back and when she leveled her gaze on him again, she almost barfed at his term of ‘endearment.’ Though, it was pretty clear the pet name was far more sarcastic than anything else.
She’d almost forgotten that Tommy might still be watching the two of them. And as Archie leaned in, it was her turn for her eyes to widen in surprise. His stupid stubbled face kept getting closer and closer to hers and for a split second, a horrifying, terrible second, Veronica truly wondered if Archie was about to kiss her. But in the very next instant, he was pinching her chin chin and her eyes narrowed practically to slits as he smugly insinuated she’d fallen in love with him.
White hot rage and something else coursed through her as he finallypulled away from her and ordered them both another round. God, she hated the stupid prick. He was so cocky and idiotic and stupid. Like she would ever fall for him???
With her hands balled into fists at her side, it took everything in her not to punch him in the groin. Instead, when the bartender brought their two shots over, Veronica picked them both up, and threw them back one after the other. Letting out a self-satisfied sigh, once she’d swallowed all of the burning liquid, she turned towards Archie, taking a step or two closer to him till her body was pressed up against him, her eyes locked on his. Reaching up, she draped one arm over his shoulder while the other hand lightly slid down his jaw. She was fairly certain they had never been this close to each other before, and God did she hope she never had to be so close again.
“In your dreams, baby.” she whispered in his ear, before promptly stomping on his foot, just hard enough that it wouldn’t be too obvious for anyone else to see, and pushing herself away from him so she could storm off towards the dance floor. Leaving Archie with the bill for the drinks she’d consumed and hopefully a broken toe or two in her wake.
Archie wanted to deny that he was drunk, but the closer Veronica stepped in his direction, the fuzzier things seemed to get. He probably shouldn’t have taken that last shot -- luckily Veronica had taken his own for him. But that didn’t change this stupid little game of theirs. One minute she was in control, the next Archie was fighting his way back up to the top, and somehow along the way she’d ended up pressed up against up against him, her palm so soft as it lightly moved down his jaw, Archie was almost tempted to nuzzle towards it if it hadn’t been attached to the worst person he had ever met. He was pretty sure he hadn’t even been this close to Reggie before. Her eyes definitely weren’t the same color as Reggie’s -- in fact, one actually looked a bit lighter than the other, it was sort of annoying. His gaze narrowed before becoming almost wary -- (un)fortunately it didn’t take long for Archie to figure out the game. He made a strangled groan as her stupid tiny foot came down on top of one of his own, and his face crinkled before he finally moved to pick up his beer once again, tipping back the last of his drink before dropping money and a generous tip down and following her out into the crowd. Which -- why was he even following her, anyway? He didn’t have to play the stupid game. He was more than welcome to bounce out and let her deal with her shitty ex all on her own -- he didn’t owe her a singe thing after the last time they had seen each other and Archie was more than willing to let their terrible run-ins come to an end. And yet... She’d looked pretty torn up. She had friends somewhere around here, though. And even if they had left (like he was pretty convinced Auggie and Ty had left him at this point), he could always get a hold of Reggie. But what would he have done if Veronica was Reggie?? Not pretend to be his boyfriend, that was for sure. But... Well, fuck it. He was already here and maybe he was a little concerned that she get a cab and not go off on some weird tangent because it would put a little damper on his thirty year friendship with Reg if he was the last person to see his sister before she got shanked or something. And honestly, he was already standing stupidly on the dance floor, trying to find where that stupid shrimp had ran off to. He spotted her already moving pretty methodically to the beat of the hip hop music blaring through the club, at least for someone he had just witnessed take like.... five shots of liquor, but his appreciation didn’t last much longer when a guy in a salmon colored polo swooped in behind to dance with Veronica and a group of girls practically knocked him over as they attempted to dance their way into the pit. Ugh. Maybe Archie really was getting too old for this stuff. He wiggled his way through the crowd, the music thumping loudly and his annoyance with salmon polo dude only getting worse with each passing person he had to squish through to get to Veronica in the first place. When he finally did a moment later, Archie managed to get a grip of salmon polo’s forearm, shooting him a wordless glare which seemed to work out pretty okay because he glared right back at Archie but otherwise danced away. Dancing. Archie swayed to the beat (made a lot easier thanks to those shots from earlier) before blindly moving to slink his hand down to grab Veronica’s arm for attention but somehow managing to grab her waist instead. Which was probably her fault, her arms kept moving and everyone was so close and all pressed together and maybe he wasn’t even grabbing her waist but her eyes flickered to his a second later and Archie didn’t even really have a second to let himself be embarrassed. He leaned down, his nose bumping against her ear as he made the move to yell into it, about to tell her that he was going to leave and she should come because he didn’t really want to pretend to be her boyfriend anymore if she was going to abuse him. But what came out instead was: “You know you don’t have to prove anything to that asshole, right?”
