Open Thread: An Old Pastime

The Weedleâs cries softened as it saw the bean. It leaned forward and started to nibble at the bean happily. Karrai sighed in relief.
âThanks. I havenât been around a bug PokĂ©mon this young since Whisper was a tiny Scyther.â She said as the Weedle crawled onto Guzmaâs palm, happily enjoying the rainbow bean.
Karrai thought for a moment. Hayseed was the kind of idiot who would get into trouble as quickly as he could. She rubbed her face. âHe does like to climb rocks. But imagine the stupidest thing anyone could do in the forest. Thereâs a good chance heâs doing that.â
She couldnât help but smile at how careful Guzma was with the little bug. âItâs pretty amazing how small it is.â She said, sitting down and bandaging her feet.
âYou donât mind holding the little guy while I do this, do you?â She asked, glancing up. It was better to be safe than not.
Oh, she had a Scyther, maybe a Scizor, judging from the way she talked about it? That was pretty sweet, he loved Scythers and Scizors, absolutely lovely, tough pokĂ©monâŠ
He was about to ask me about this Whisper of herâs when the Weedle crawled over onto his hand, the man immediately freezing up.
â!!!â
Tiny Weedle, on his hand. Small, precious bug. If Karrai liked how gentle and caring heâd been with it before, she was about to see that soft side of Guzma even more intensely: a bright, loving smile crept across his face as the pokĂ©mon sat on his palm, eating the bean. It was like he was just a tiny, young little Bug Catcher againâŠand in some ways he still was. He loved bug-types, and not a day passed that he didnât enjoy spending time with them, hunting for them, learning more about themâŠ
âEh?â
Oh, she wanted wanted him to hold it? Say no more: he slowly moved his hand closer to his body, cradling the little Weedle close to him, giving it a more a more stable spot to sit. It really was such a small thing and-
When he looked up, he saw the girl patching up her feet, the man tilting his head a little: no shoes, huh? In the middle of the jungleâŠyea, they needed to find this Cacturne before she ended up cutting her foot on a rock or something.
âTurns out the stupidest thing around here IS rock-climbing: thereâs a tall rock formation a ways back, has some big berry trees at the top of it but goinâ up it is bound to get yaâ killed:  rocks up there are old, donât hold together too well with all the plants growing in-between âem. I went up there to catch a Butterfree once and almost fell when my foothold broke off the fuckinâ second I put my weight on itâŠâ
He almost broke his arm getting down from there too, had to send Golisopod out to catch him when he lost his handhold.
He gave the Weedle a few little pets along its back, a faint smile on his face as he continued:Â
âYour Cacturne might be up thereâŠor, probably, got itself stuck climbinâ up there. Either way.â
Karrai pursed her lips and tried not to scream in frustration. This was not a good morning. âGreat. If thereâs something that he would do, it would be climbing to the top of a dangerous and precarious rock pile. I swear to Arceus, Iâm going to buy a child leash for him one of these days.â She said, sighing as she finished one foot, switching to patch up the other. Sheâd already got a few small cuts on her feet feet but nothing too bad.
âThanks. When this is done, I promise, Iâll help you find that shiny you almost got. Itâs the least I can do.â She said glancing up and catching the slight smile on his face. She returned it with a slight smile of her own.Â
After she finished bandaging both her feet, Karrai stood up again. âAlright. Where is the place?â She asked, pulling her hair out of her face.Â
