Winter Mountaineering Training – Arete Outdoor Centre (UK)
This introductory course is intended to provide climbers and hillwalkers with the skills they need to travel safely and enjoyably in winter mountain environments. The course is conducted in areas where snow and ice accumulate, with the primary areas of travel being either Snowdonia National Park or the Scottish Highlands, depending on the weather and snow cover.
Purpose: To provide students with the skills needed to be confident and competent when travelling in winter mountain environments.
Length: Typically, the course runs 2 to 5 days, based on the schedule.
Course Locations: Most courses take place in Snowdonia (North Wales) or Scotland.
How to properly use an ice axe and crampon(s)
How to navigate using map, compass and GPS in winter
How to be aware of, and assess, avalanche potential and hazards
How to travel on snow and ice, including ascending, descending and traversing
How to plan routes and make decisions with regard to winter conditions
What to do in an emergency situation and the basics of cold weather survival
People who have done hill walks/climbing in the summer who want to move to winter mountaineering.
Those preparing for advanced alpine or expedition style training. Individuals wish to make the transition to winter mountaineering.
Layered clothing that is warm and appropriate for the cold and wet weather.
Mountaineering boots (compatible with crampons)
Ice axe, helmet, harness and crampon kits, if not supplied, will be available to loan. Most centres allow equipment to be booked in advance.
At the end of the course, participants will be able to confidently plan and undertake a winter mountain journey. Participants will develop the ability to assess conditions and manage risks in order to do so safely.
