Colour Porn in Utopia // Episodes 01&02

I started watching the new U.K. TV series Utopia (Channel 4). Info about the show from the creators:

Dark and enigmatic thriller. When an unconnected set of people find themselves in possession of the manuscript for a legendary graphic novel, their lives brutally implode as they are pursued by a shadowy and murderous organisation…

Spelling “organization” with an “s” - U.K. thing? Anywho, the show is pretty good but the reason I absolutely love it is the visuals. Ole Bratt Birkeland (the director of photography) seems just like me; obsessed with straight lines. The low, wide angle shots are fantastic and the indoor ones are very Kubrick. The colouring (spelling war!) and vignetting can and do get a bit out of hand at times - but that’s not Ole’s fault, I guess the post production supervisor and the colourist are to blame. This is the most beautiful TV series I’ve seen in ages - not just those sweeping vistas but the whole damn thing. Thanks to Ole’s work on this series I’m going to check out his work on The Arbor (2010).
