(Open Starter ft Coldhorn)

Cold… so cold… It’s always been that way ever since he woke up. A voice, a cold, dark voice calling him, beckoning, commanding him to rise. It wasn’t always this way, he was once a noble warrior that opposed all manner of evil. Be it tyrannical Humans, Old Gods or even the Undead Scourge, he fought them all. A question always burdened his mind, why? Why don’t I just end it here, now, I’ve done enough, my time came and peace was stolen from me, why do I press on? Year after year the question remained and nothing he did seemed to get him any answers. Though the lone warrior of death lived a second time it was not completely welcomed.

With a heavy weight in his chest he moved ever onward, trudging through the snowy lands of Northrend staring up at the spire of Icecrown Citadel, the former home of his mortal enemy now slain and forgotten. Without warning a fierce blizzard started to rage as it often happens in this frozen continent. Seeking shelter he trudged ever onward towards an old seemingly abandoned cave hoping that nothing lurked inside and if there was that it had the option of running but deep inside a lust to kill compelled him inside. Death Knights, as they were called, couldn’t help but kill, they were compelled to, whether under the service of the Lich King at the time or free from his control. It mattered not, this is what they were now, walking death.

“I’m deeply sorry to hear that, it is unfortunate your family was brought low. I agree with your opinion of Mulgore, I could have never thought of a better home for myself… or, my family. I don’t mind sharing my past anymore, I’ve gotten over the pain enough that it doesn’t hurt as bad.” he looked at the fire as it was getting low then pulled out a bottle of flammable oil pouring some out onto the burning wood to keep it going. “I was an alchemy merchant and traveled often, I was to travel to Silvermoon City to share supplies, this was before the scourge attacked. I thought it would be a safe and easy trip so I allowed my wife and daughter to accompany me, let the little one explore more of the world outside Mulgore and Thunder Bluff. It was the biggest mistake I ever made.” The black furred Tauren reaches into a small satchel on his waist and produced a small bracelet made with colorful beads holding it in the light to show the Blood Elf in front of him. “When they attacked we were fleeing, my wife and daughter tripped, I tried to rush to their aid but I got knocked aside by a frenzied horse that was running for safety, right into the water just north of the ruins of Zeb’Watha. The caravan fell on top of me pinning me under the water, trapped. I remember fighting desperately to free myself and save my family then, it all went black. When I came to, I was in the Eastern Plaguelands free from Arthas’ control. Once that was over I went straight back to Silvermoon looking for my family.”

Arista was quiet for a moment before she turned her head to the death knight. “Did you find them?” She asked cautiously. She wasn’t sure if it was smart to ask about this painful part of his past, considering that there was no escaping this cave and that he could blow up at any moment. But perhaps if she could keep him talking, he would forget that he had wanted to kill her.

“It is possible they survived the attack. There were many that were able to flee unharmed.” It was true, her parents were able to escape the war with their heads still on their shoulders. But they had been trained war soldiers, their romance budding from the ashes of the war. The chance of two civilians making their escape was slimmer then her parents.

And while her spirit could outlast the sudden blizzard, she knew that her body could not. And so, she quickly dove for cover at the first opportunity. The damp, cold cave was silent, save for her own footsteps. It wasn’t pleasant, but as she turned to look back at the storm she barely escaped, she knew it was better to be in here then out there. She crossed her arms as she traveled further into the cave. If she could just take shelter here for the night and continue her journey, then she would be satisfied. As she walked, she made an attempt to warm herself up. Her breathing steadied, the puffs of warmth escaped her lips as the chill began to settle in. Just as she thought of making a fire, another set of foot prints behind her made her whirl around, her hands quickly finding her blades to hold.

“Who are you?” echoed a cold voice that would send a chill down the spine of any living creature. There stood what looked to be a Tauren with ebony fur and glowing blue eyes as cold and unforgiving as the blizzard outside. The heavy clop of heavy hooves echoed as he walked closer, fighting the urge to make the unfortunate Blood Elf suffer. This urge never left for good it would go dormant at time but always it would return and nag the Death Knight to commit unspeakable acts of pain and even death.

“I wasn’t expecting anyone to be here, at least nothing sentient. If it weren’t for the blizzard I’d urge you to run, I cannot control this lust for murder very long, not that I can help it.” he said, stopping in his tracks while his eyes though cold seemed to show great sorrow at encountering another living thinking being. How cruel this existence was for him but he knew death would only torture him even worse instead of free him from this waking nightmare. “I don’t mean to threaten but I am a Death Knight, I cannot help what I am now, my name is Coldhorn and for your sake I certainly hope you’re a good fighter.”

Beings who were raised from the dead to serve the cruel Lich King. She almost felt sorry for the Tauren standing there. However, her survival instincts quickly took over. She needed to survive. Her hands, which had already found her blades, tightened itself around the hilt. She didn’t know what to do. To run was basically suicide. To stay and fight… would also be suicide. It seemed like her options all lead to one thing: her death. Despite this, she let out a cold laugh and steadily met the gaze of the Tauren. “Coldhorn… there are many who want my head. I am not afraid.” While her words sounded brave, her mind was racing. He was a Death Knight, that much she was sure of. But he was also a Tauren… a group of people who pledged their loyalty to the Horde. To kill a member of the Horde needlessly was not ideal. Sure, she could attempt to keep the Tauren calm, as Tauren were quite calm by nature. But something told her that it would not be as easy as she thought. Perhaps it was the glowing blue eyes that stared into her soul. “I am not leaving this cave. And I’ll do whatever I can to stay.”

The icy howl of the blizzard roared over the silence, the tension growing thicker by the minute. Coldhorn hoped there was something else here, anything else that he could direct those murderous urges towards. Slaying a member of the Horde, a faction he pledged his loyalty to would not go over well. With a snort he restrained himself from reaching for his Blades intending to resist the urge to murder, wishing this wasn’t necessary. “You’re wanted are you? By what name do you go by, perhaps I’ve heard of you, Elf.” those words echoed around the cave cutting the tension like it was paper.

“Why would a Blood Elf be doing all the way out here in the frozen north, alone? You’ve piqued my curiosity.” he said with a forced casualty, he was stalling. Trying desperately to put up a wall between him and the intense murderous impulses he was feeling.

Arista stood up straighter. While her guard hasn’t been dropped, it seemed to her as if the Tauren was… restraining himself. ‘But why…’ she couldn’t help but wonder. “I.. I am Arista Mourningstar. You may call me Arista.” With the same forced casualty, she entertained the Tauren. “I’m here because I’ve been sent up north. I am, what you would call, an assassin. I take whatever jobs I can get, even if it means traveling to this blasted wasteland. There’s a goblin who needs to be… taken care of. Sleeping with one’s husband can get you in a lot of trouble these days,” she said with a hint of a grin. While killing the victim was the most difficult part of her job, minus the traveling, knowing that someone got the revenge they deserve gave her something resembling happiness. While she knew true happiness would be difficult to achieve, she was quite content with this fake happiness and satisfaction. “I may ask you the same question, why are you here? I would assume it’s not to pick Lichblooms.”

He smiled, a rare commodity given to anyone these days, his stone cold demeanor usually remained unchanged regardless who he encountered. “Well that was a side errand for my travels, alchemy is demanding work. I actually came up here for these.” he said unsheathing two wicked blades resembling Frostmourne that emanated a frightening chill, the Blades of the Fallen Prince. “Even a broken blade has its uses if reforged into something new. It gives me great satisfaction to know Arthas is dead. An end he so rightly deserved.” his voice fell silent quickly before he knelt to the ground digging through a pack he produced a flint and a bundle of dry wood.

“The cold no longer bothers me but you, you’re still living and you won’t stay warm in here without a fire.” he said before a quick clang rang out in the cave as blade met flint sending sparks flying to the bundle before quickly catching fire. “I think I have the urges on a leash, you can relax a bit, we’re on the same side, Rogue. I do however hope you’ve got food with you, I’m out of rations, not that I really need them.”

To think that he would even- Her trail of thought was broken at the sight of the spark and then the roaring fire. Her eyes widened as her body stiffened to a stop. The smell assaulted her nose and the heat of the fire burned throughout her body. While this terror only lasted a fraction of a second, the memories it brought lingered for a moment longer before she returned to the present. She cleared her throat, sheathed her weapons and waved a hand. With a whisper of a spell, a loaf of conjured bread appeared in her hand. She looked back up at the Tauren and gave him a nod. “Thank you… for the fire.” She said, her eyes and body still very much guarded, but she was unarmed now, save for the loaf of bread in her hands. “Perhaps you do not need food, but do you need any refreshments?” She offered.

“Not quite but it is hard for one to shake habits they’ve gained through living their life, such is the way of undeath.” he sighed softly as he stared at the fire while adding a couple more bundles to it. It seemed so long ago that the scourge attacked led by Arthas, so long for some but for Coldhorn it was an event relived almost every day. How he missed it all, the feeling of the sun on his back, the taste of freshly cooked food, the warm breeze through his fur, even the laughter of his small daughter. Arthas had taken everything from him, absolutely everything. Even as a Death Knight the Tauren knee no peace and probably never would for the atrocities he committed under the Lich Kong’s rule.

It took a sudden spark to snap him out of his trance and he jumped slightly before regaining his composure. Every now and then he set into his deep thinking, back to when the days were pleasant and his life felt whole. “So, Arista was it? Do you hail from Silvermoon City?” he asked calmly, seemingly more in control of his murderous urges. “I can’t really guess where else you could’ve come from, other than maybe Quel’danas.”

Instead of inquiring on his own past, she dug into her own. “Actually... neither.” She answered. “My parents were war heroes. They fought bravely in... well...” she shifted her feet before continuing, “the war against the Lich King. When they had finished their service... they knew that they had to be somewhere peaceful and safe for their daughter. A shaman who had fought along side them offered them a place in Mulgore. We lived outside of the town and we rarely interacted with the townsfolk there. It was the most peaceful spot they could think of.” Except that peace would only be temporary. Her chest tightened as the recalled the events of her parent’s death. She would never forget the faces of those soundless assassins who set their house ablaze, and the one who would slit her father’s throat in front of her. It had only been by pure luck that she was able to escape. Their house was no more. She made no attempts to rebuild, even though the community had offered up their hides. “Why would a Blood Elf be doing all the way out here in the frozen north, alone? You’ve piqued my curiosity.” he said with a forced casualty, he was stalling. Trying desperately to put up a wall between him and the intense murderous impulses he was feeling.

Arista stood up straighter. While her guard hasn’t been dropped, it seemed to her as if the Tauren was... restraining himself. ‘But why...’ she couldn’t help but wonder. “I.. I am Arista Mourningstar. You may call me Arista.” With the same forced casualty, she entertained the Tauren. “I’m here because I’ve been sent up north. I am, what you would call, an assassin. I take whatever jobs I can get, even if it means traveling to this blasted wasteland. There’s a goblin who needs to be... taken care of. Sleeping with one’s husband can get you in a lot of trouble these days,” she said with a hint of a grin. While killing the victim was the most difficult part of her job, minus the traveling, knowing that someone got the revenge they deserve gave her something resembling happiness. While she knew true happiness would be difficult to achieve, she was quite content with this fake happiness and satisfaction. “I may ask you the same question, why are you here? I would assume it’s not to pick Lichblooms.”

Cold… so cold… It’s always been that way ever since he woke up. A voice, a cold, dark voice calling him, beckoning, commanding him to rise. It wasn’t always this way, he was once a noble warrior that opposed all manner of evil. Be it tyrannical Humans, Old Gods or even the Undead Scourge, he fought them all. A question always burdened his mind, why? Why don’t I just end it here, now, I’ve done enough, my time came and peace was stolen from me, why do I press on? Year after year the question remained and nothing he did seemed to get him any answers. Though the lone warrior of death lived a second time it was not completely welcomed.

With a heavy weight in his chest he moved ever onward, trudging through the snowy lands of Northrend staring up at the spire of Icecrown Citadel, the former home of his mortal enemy now slain and forgotten. Without warning a fierce blizzard started to rage as it often happens in this frozen continent. Seeking shelter he trudged ever onward towards an old seemingly abandoned cave hoping that nothing lurked inside and if there was that it had the option of running but deep inside a lust to kill compelled him inside. Death Knights, as they were called, couldn’t help but kill, they were compelled to, whether under the service of the Lich King at the time or free from his control. It mattered not, this is what they were now, walking death.

Arista Mourningstar could tolerate many things. However, even she was smart enough to take care of her physical well-being. And while her spirit could outlast the sudden blizzard, she knew that her body could not. And so, she quickly dove for cover at the first opportunity. The damp, cold cave was silent, save for her own footsteps. It wasn’t pleasant, but as she turned to look back at the storm she barely escaped, she knew it was better to be in here then out there. She crossed her arms as she traveled further into the cave. If she could just take shelter here for the night and continue her journey, then she would be satisfied. As she walked, she made an attempt to warm herself up. Her breathing steadied, the puffs of warmth escaped her lips as the chill began to settle in. Just as she thought of making a fire, another set of foot prints behind her made her whirl around, her hands quickly finding her blades to hold.

“Who are you?” echoed a cold voice that would send a chill down the spine of any living creature. There stood what looked to be a Tauren with ebony fur and glowing blue eyes as cold and unforgiving as the blizzard outside. The heavy clop of heavy hooves echoed as he walked closer, fighting the urge to make the unfortunate Blood Elf suffer. This urge never left for good it would go dormant at time but always it would return and nag the Death Knight to commit unspeakable acts of pain and even death.

“I wasn’t expecting anyone to be here, at least nothing sentient. If it weren’t for the blizzard I’d urge you to run, I cannot control this lust for murder very long, not that I can help it.” he said, stopping in his tracks while his eyes though cold seemed to show great sorrow at encountering another living thinking being. How cruel this existence was for him but he knew death would only torture him even worse instead of free him from this waking nightmare. “I don’t mean to threaten but I am a Death Knight, I cannot help what I am now, my name is Coldhorn and for your sake I certainly hope you’re a good fighter.”

I am not afraid.” While her words sounded brave, her mind was racing. He was a Death Knight, that much she was sure of. That’s not me anymore,” she tried to lie. But with her face still the red, anyone could tell that she was lying.
